Level 2 Writing Mark Scheme General guidance For both tasks there is a suggested word count. Candidates should not be penalised for responses which are longer or shorter than the suggested number of words. It is the quality not the quantity of work that affects the assessment outcome. Assessors must judge whether candidates have met the relevant assessment criteria. The maximum number of marks for each task is 15. The following marking criteria grids should be applied separately to each task. Award marks according to the marking criteria with reference to the indicative content for each task. Content and Presentation Candidate communicates task fully, presenting ideas and information in a concise, logical 4 and persuasive manner. Information on complex subjects is clear and coherent. Candidate mostly communicates task, presenting ideas and information in a mostly 3 concise, logical and persuasive manner. Information on complex subjects is mostly clear and coherent. Candidate partially communicates task. Sequence is not necessarily logical, and writing is 2 not always concise or persuasive. Limited information on complex subjects which lacks clarity. Candidate produces very limited response to the task. Little relevant information or ideas. 1 Overall, writing lacks clarity and coherence. No clear information on complex subjects. Little or no relevant communication. 0 Language, format and structure Writing is structured in paragraphs, using a wide range of sentence structures, including 3 complex sentences, using appropriate vocabulary and expressions at Level 2. The style, format and language are suitable for purpose and audience. Writing includes some use of paragraphs, using a range of sentence structures, including 2 occasional complex sentences, using appropriate vocabulary and expressions at Level 2. The style, format and language are mostly suitable for purpose and audience, Writing lacks structure overall with limited use of paragraphs. Format and style not 1 always appropriate for purpose and audience. Some use of appropriate vocabulary and expressions at this level. Language, format and structure are not sufficient to meet the requirements of the task. 0 Punctuation Sentences are punctuated correctly so that meaning is clear, including accurate use of 2 commas, apostrophes and inverted commas. Sentences are punctuated mostly correctly. Meaning is clear but there are errors in 1 punctuation, including errors in the use of commas, apostrophes and inverted commas. Punctuation is often incorrect and meaning not clear. 0 Grammar Sentences are complete and include complex sentences. Grammatical features are used accurately so that meaning is clear. Sentences are complete and include some complex sentences. Grammatical features are mostly accurate and meaning is not impaired. Sentences are mostly simple with few complex features. Sentences are simple and contain basic grammatical errors. Meaning is often not clear. 1 The level of grammatical error mean communication is not achieved. 0 Spelling Words with regular and irregular spelling patterns are spelt correctly. 2 Most common and familiar words are spelt correctly. Spelling errors mostly occur in words 1 with irregular spelling patterns but do not impede communication. The number of spelling errors mean communication is not achieved. 0 Indicative content Task A Responses should indicate the reason for the letter (expressing concern for the closure of the leisure centre) and adopt a formal polite tone and register with an appropriate beginning and ending to the letter Answers should include : Why they are writing The concerns they have The effects of the closure What the Council should do Indicative content Task B Responses should indicate the reason for the email and adopt an informal/friendly tone and register with an informal beginning and ending. The layout of the email is given.
