Art & Design 2018-2019 For the future you want

ART & DESIGN The School of Art & Design is one of the largest of its kind in the UK with over 700 students and has a strong reputation for progressing students into both degree-level study and employment in the creative industries. Our students regularly present their art and design work in exhibitions and industry nights at venues across Edinburgh. Our graduate diploma shows in 2017 were held at Summerhall, The Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, and within the studios at our Granton campus. Links with industry and art colleges across the UK are key to us achieving our main aim and purpose: to provide an exciting creative space and a challenging curriculum to allow our students to stretch, test and develop their own creativity to positively influence the world around them. We have strong partnerships with the National Galleries of Scotland, design agencies and art colleges including Glasgow School of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and University of the Arts London, among others. Regular visits to local studios, galleries and workshops are a key part of our course delivery and students also have opportunities to participate in study trips further afield including London, Paris, Berlin and Basel. To succeed as a working artist or designer, your future success is based on the quality of the work you produce and how professionally you present it your portfolio. Here at Edinburgh College you can build, refine and showcase your talent by developing not only specialist skills but create a portfolio that will gain you second or third year entry at degree level, enter employment or confidently begin your own creative studio practice. Be inspired and become the artist or designer you wish to be by applying to study at Edinburgh College s School of Art & Design. PARTNERS We are the first college in Scotland to offer Art & Design qualifications from the prestigious University of the Arts London (UAL) Awarding Body. UAL is Europe s largest specialist arts university and their innovative courses prepare students to enter the best arts courses at the best arts universities, across the UK. GLOW Glow festival is a two month creative explosion giving audiences the chance to enjoy performances and exhibitions from Edinburgh College students covering all our curriculum areas. AWARDS Our students are often in the news, winning national awards for example the D+AD, Show Racism The Red Card, SQA Star Awards and the Scottish Digital Business Awards. EXHIBITIONS At the end of the year our students exhibit and launch their careers as part of Glow Festival. This year our exhibitions and industry events include high profile venues including the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Summerhall and the Fruitmarket Gallery. Students Association Edinburgh College PORTFOLIO Candidates will be asked to bring a portfolio of recent practical and contextual art and design work to their folio submission day. You can prepare by collecting together your art and design work, and thinking about what you can tell us about your interest in art and your aspirations to become an artist or designer.

SPOTLIGHT JDAN WJ PRASAD // MENSWEAR DESIGNER I obtained an MA in Menswear from the prestigious Royal College of Art (RCA) in July 2014 where I developed and worked very closely with a tailoring house in Italy. My final collection was produced by the last standing menswear couture house Brioni now owned by the Kering Group. My time at RCA was a great stepping stone for the next stage of my career and gaining employment in the fashion industry. I obtained my first job with E. Tautz within two weeks of graduating from RCA. Prior to entering RCA I was successful in gaining direct level entry into year two of BA Fashion Design at Edinburgh College of Art after studying in the Art and Design department at Edinburgh College; this was possibly the most important part of my education. I spent three years at Edinburgh College, firstly studying the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design before progressing onto the HND in Textiles. My aim at Edinburgh College was to build an exciting portfolio and gain the knowledge and experience to successfully enter art college. Not really knowing what I wanted to specialise in during my Foundation Diploma, I was guided into an area of design that I previously hadn t considered. The teaching was not only impeccable but inspiring, and the support that the Art & Design department provided shaped me into a student that was knowledgeable, excited and competent within my specialism. In fact so much so that I decided to stay for another two years to gain even more experience within fashion and textiles by studying the HND. This provided me with the confidence and belief in my own work and chosen career path. The most important part of my time at Edinburgh College was that it provided me with the time to understand what path I wanted to follow. I am now employed as a Menswear Designer for E. Tautz. I work on collections for runway, twice a year we show at London Fashion Week (LCM London Collections Men). I also work on the ready to wear line for our store in Mayfair along with a seasonal womenswear collection, shown twice a year at London Fashion Week (Womens). I am forever grateful to the staff of the Art & Design department and the Fashion and Textiles team for believing in and inspiring me.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE AIRetc our Artist-In-Residence programme is a four month residency offered to artists and designers who wish to develop their practice post university in an educational context of Further Education. The AIRetc programme was launched in 2010 and is an innovative scheme which provides recently graduated or professional artists and designers with a dedicated studio space within the Art & Design department as well as access to specialist resources and facilities. Our past graduates can apply for one of the residencies and this is an excellent way of keeping in touch with our alumni family but to offer valuable experience to our graduates. LYNNE MCBRIDE Feb 2018 June 2018 RACHAEL SIMPSON Sep 2017 - Jan 2018 LEWIS BISSETT Feb 2017 - June 2017 HAZEL POWELL Feb 2016 - June 2016 PAVLOS GEORGIOU Sep 2015 - Jan 2016 VISITING ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS We have a strong and expanding programme of visiting artists and designers, which is a key aspect of the professional practice element of many of our courses. The programme gives students the opportunity to communicate directly with professional and active practitioners to enhance their progression and employment within the art and design sector. This immersive residency has given me time and space to develop my own art practice through the inspirational staff, students and facilities, but more importantly I feel dedicated and excited about what I can bring to this unique exchange of learning through contemporary art. Rachael Simpson Artist-in-Residence Sep 2017 - Jan 2018 PROGRESSION AND ARTICULATION Your time with us is important but so is where you go to after graduating. We have articulation agreements with Edinburgh Napier University, Heriot-Watt University, University of Cumbria and The Glasgow School of Art, and have strong links and partnerships with other art colleges including University of the Arts London and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Our students can progress into 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of degree-level and many successfully enter directly into employment after graduating.

Employability All of our art and design courses have a focus on practical briefs to make sure you gain experience of the creative process. These are often live projects with real budgets and clients, working from the Creative Exchange Leith, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and The Bothy Project at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. These projects give give you vital real life working experience to be a success in the creative industries and become a practicing artist or designer.
