This paper is in two parts: Part 1: Aspects of International Relations, 1919 2005 (Sections A, B and C) and Part 2: Depth Study The USA, 1945 1975: Land of Freedom? In Part 1, Aspects of International Relations, choose one of the following sections: Either Section A: The Inter-War Years, 1919 1939 Or Section B: The Cold War, 1945 1975 Or Section C: A New World? 1948 2005. Then answer Question 1 and one other question from the section you have chosen. In Part 2, Depth Study The USA, 1945 1975: Land of Freedom?, answer Question 4 and one other question. In these questions, you will need to use your knowledge of the topic to interpret the source. Answer Question 1 and EITHER Question 2 OR Question 3. You should spend about 15 minutes on Question 1. 1 Study the source carefully and then answer the questions which follow. SOURCE A A cartoon published in Britain in October 1939. It shows Hitler and Stalin. 1 (a) Study Source A. What is the cartoonist s message? Use details of the cartoon and your knowledge to explain your answer. [7] (b) Explain why Britain followed a policy of appeasement towards Germany in the 1930s. [8]

You should spend about 35 minutes on this question. 2 (a) What terms of the Treaty of Versailles weakened the German economy? [4] (b) Explain why Clemenceau was dissatisfied with the Treaty of Versailles. [6] (c) Germany had good reasons to complain about the Treaty of Versailles. How far do you agree with this statement? 8 Part 2: Depth Study The USA, 1945 1975: Land of Freedom? Some of the questions require you to use sources. In these questions, you will need to use your knowledge of the topic to interpret and evaluate the sources. You should spend about 70 minutes on this section. Answer Question 4 and ONE other question. 4 Study the sources carefully and then answer the questions which follow. SOURCE B The front cover of an American magazine, published in 1947.

10 SOURCE D All of us have slowly come to question McCarthy s judgement to some extent. We fear that his need to make headlines and his inaccuracies and distortions will lead him, and us, into trouble. It is no exaggeration to say we live in fear that Senator McCarthy will one day make a mistake that will discredit our anti-communist efforts for a long time to come. From a letter written by Whittaker Chambers in January 1954. Whittaker Chambers had supported Joseph McCarthy. 4 (a) Study Source B. Why was this source published in 1947? [4] (b) Explain why the 1963 march on Washington was important. [6] (c) The following made an equal contribution to improving civil rights in the 1960s: (i) (ii) President Kennedy; Malcolm X. How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer referring only to (i) and (ii). [10] 6 (a) Describe how abortion laws were challenged in the USA in the 1960s and 1970s. [4] (b) Explain why American women campaigned for equality in the 1960s and 1970s. [6] (c) How successful had women been in their campaign to improve their rights by the mid-1970s?
