June 2011 ~ Lloyd Doré III, EA, ATA, ATP As I sit down to write this message the final touches are being made for the 60th LSIA annual state convention. For 2011 it will take place in the heart of Cajun Country, Lafayette on June 26th, 27th & 28th. District 1 (Lafayette Chapter) is the sponsor of this year s convention. If you have not yet registered, please do so today. Registration is available on the LSIA website. Our special thanks go to Larry Mouton, Rodney Hartman, Danette Daigle, Dexter Duhon and other members for all of their work in preparing the presentations and arrangements to make this year s convention one that should be special. When planning your 2011-2012 CPE seminar attendance remember to register in advance for the SBET reimbursement program, before the deadlines pass for each seminar you plan to attend. The coming year will present new challenges and opportunities for all professional tax preparers. LSIA will continue to represent our member s best interest. We will continue to sponsor seminars which provide timely and up-to-date information that is useful for our practices and clients. If there is a member service or seminar content you think should be added, please let Larry Mouton or me know. As we embark together for another year, please remember to get involved as this is YOUR organization. Your input and support will pave the way for a better LSIA tomorrow. Merci Beaucoup goes to the LSIA officers, board, committee chairs and Executive Secretary Larry Mouton for their excellent efforts during my term as president. It has been a privilege to be associated with all these LSIA members. I hope to see you at the 60th LSIA annual state convention on June 26th, 27th & 28th. Greetings from your NSA District VIII Governor, pg. 3 60th Anniversary Convention - IT S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER! pg. 4 SBET, pg. 4

from Your NSA STATE DIRECTOR DEXTER DUHON, EA, CPA Hi Everybody, Are you relaxing yet? By now, most of you should have either completed your tax season or begun to wind things down. Although we still have several returns left to do, the pressure has subsided. This is the time of year that we begin to shift gears toward next year. Like us, I am sure that many of you are deciding which CPE sessions you will attend between now & the end of the year. Of course there are many available options. The 60th LSIA annual convention is being held on June 26th, 27th, & 28th, in Lafayette. As always, the convention will be both entertaining & educational. Of particular interest will be a discussion of the recently completed tax season. The discussion will involve both the good & bad things that have developed during tax season. You may find out that problems you thought were unique to your practice are actually more common than you think. You might be relieved to find that someone has created a solution to some of those problems. It promises to be an interesting discussion. At the end of this month, the IRS tax forums are beginning. As always, they are held in a number of cities throughout the country. This year s schedule has one of the forums being held in Dallas, Texas on July 26th 28th. Because of its proximity to Louisiana, is an ideal location for our practitioners. You must act soon if you plan to attend. The NSA convention will be held in Anchorage Alaska on August 16th 19th. Having attended many of the conventions in the past, I can assure that, if attending, you will not be disappointed. For those of you who have always wanted to visit the great State of Alaska, this is your chance. Then, toward the end of the year, you will have NCPE seminars taking place throughout the country. Cathy & I attend NCPE every year. These are always very informative. In addition, there are numerous other avenues for you to get prepared for next year. You should be getting notification of all of these seminars as they come up. The opportunities are there. Good luck on deciding which ones you will attend. Cathy & I hope to see some of you at the various seminars/conventions that we will be attending. ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!!

REMINDER LSIA 60TH ANNIVERSARY CONVENTION BEING HELD IN LAFAYETTE, LA. JUNE 26, 27, AND 28, 2011 NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER ONLINE AT www.lsia.com CPE BY PETER LOSAVIO New Members for June 2011 Cheryl Davis - Farmerville, La. New requirements are coming in the future from the Internal Revenue Service in regards to filing tax returns. Information on the requirements can be found on the NSA website. If you are not a member you may want to consider joining NSA. NSA is a national organization with its main purpose of helping accountants and tax preparers. NSA monitors the U.S. Congress to protect our profession. The CPA, EA, and other tax professionals don t have the time to monitor what is happening in our Federal and State Government so NSA is our watch dog. This organization keeps tabs on what is happening. So help them by becoming a member which provides money to keep them an organization working for us. The NSA website is www.nsacct.org On their website you can find information for the Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) Exam Review Course You can also find study material that can be purchased. LSIA works the same way. We provide seminars to keep you informed and also earn CPE. LSIA also monitors the Louisiana State Legislation to keep in touch as to what is taking place in regards to our profession. The new requirement requires everyone to be licensed or registered. An attorney, CPA and EA are already licensed. Each has to maintain a certain amount of CPE per year. The new requirement will require the new registered tax preparers to maintain a certain amount of CPE per year. A test will have to be taken and each unregistered tax preparer will have until the end of 2013 to take and pass this exam. Did you know that the future jobs list has Accountants as the number one professional job of the future? So you may want to advise anyone who you know is planning their future and hasn t decided on a career choice to consider when preparing for a career to become an accountant. This was in an article in the local newspaper, and it was also in another article on the website. BECOME A MEMBER OF LSIA. YOU CAN FIND A MEMBERSHIP FORM ON THE LSIA WEBSITE AT www.lsia.com Dues for members are due each year on October 1. The dues statements are sent out in September of each year. You can pay your dues online. Small Business Employee Training Program (SBET) The Louisiana Society of Independent Accountants (LSIA) is an approved qualified seminar & training provider by the Louisiana Workforce Commission, Small Business Employee Training Program (SBET). What does this mean for LSIA Members? --- You should be able to get the seminar fees reimbursed 100% for you and/or your employees who attend LSIA seminars. During the 2009-2010 seminar season, less than 10% of the 575 attending our seminars applied for the SBET reimbursement program. Information on this program and procedures to follow is available on the LSIA website. Please read the procedures carefully, as the application process is time sensitive. The online SBET application must be completed and necessary information submitted at least 31 days prior to the CPE seminar you want to attend.
