CRITERIA FOR THE ADMISSION OF STUDENTS TO YEAR 7 IN SEPTEMBER 2018 The Judd School complies with the Co-ordinated Admission Scheme which is administered by KCC. All students must be boys assessed suitable for grammar school through the Kent PESE. A maximum of 155 places will be offered. Before the application of oversubscription criteria, children with a Statement of Special Educational Need or Education, Health and Care Plan which names the school will be admitted. As a result of this, the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly. The Inner Area 135 places will be allocated to students resident in the Inner Area, which is defined by the following postcodes: TN1, TN2, TN3, TN4; TN8, TN9, TN10, TN11, TN12, TN13, TN14, TN15; ME18, ME19; TN16 1** and TN16 2** (not TN16 3** or TN16 9**); DA4 0** (not DA4 9**). Plus the civil parish of Halstead (where this is not included above). The Outer Area 20 places will be allocated to students resident in the Outer Area which is defined as being outside the Inner Area (above) and within the mainland of the United Kingdom. Undersubscription Should there be insufficient qualifying applications in one of the areas then the number of places allocated in the other area will be increased accordingly. Oversubscription Criteria for the Inner Area 2. Free School Meals Up to 5 places to students registered in the current academic year for Free School Meals, ranked according to aggregate score on the Kent PESE tests (the highest score being given the highest rank). Applicants in this category will need to fill out a Supplementary Information Form. Page 1 of 5

3. Academic Ability This will be measured by ranked aggregate scores on the Kent PESE tests (the highest score being given the highest rank). 4. Distance Where scores are the same students will be further ranked by distance from home to school. 5. Random Selection A random selection will be applied should two or more applicants have the same score on the PESE test and the same distance from home to school. Oversubscription Criteria for the Outer Area 2. Academic Ability This will be measured by ranked aggregate scores on the Kent PESE tests (the highest score being given the highest rank). 3. Distance Where scores are the same students will be further ranked by distance from home to school. 4. Random Selection A random selection will be applied should two or more applicants have the same score on the PESE test and the same distance from home to school. The waiting list will be maintained until 31 January 2019. It will be re-ranked in accordance with the oversubscription criteria each time a student is added or removed. THE ADMISSION OF STUDENTS OUTSIDE THEIR NORMAL AGE GROUP The normal age for entry into Year 7 is 11. A 10 year old or a 12 year old admitted to Year 7 at the beginning of the school year would be outside their normal age group. The Judd School would only consider such admissions in exceptional circumstances. Requests for admission outside of the normal age group should be made via the coordinated scheme using the SCAF (Secondary Common Application Form). Parents should also write directly to the Headmaster as early as possible in the admissions round. This will allow the Governing Body (the Admission Authority for The Judd School) sufficient time to make a decision. Parents are not required to provide evidence to support their request, however where provided it must be specific to the child in question. This might include medical or Educational Psychologist reports. There is no legal requirement for this medical or educational evidence to be secured from an appropriate professional, however, failure to provide this may impede our ability to agree to admission outside the normal age group. CRITERIA FOR THE ADMISSION OF STUDENTS TO YEAR 12 IN SEPTEMBER 2018 Students must have achieved a minimum total of 65 points across their best 10 GCSEs (using the 9 to 1 scale, except that grades of 4 or below count as zero) including 5 or better in each of Mathematics and English Language. [Where unreformed GCSEs have been sat the following scale will be used: A*=9, A=7, B=6, C=5, D or below =0; C or better must be achieved in Maths and English Language]. All offers made during Year 11 are conditional on students fulfilling the above criteria. There are also subject specific criteria, details of which may be found in the prospectus. Gaining a place does not guarantee a particular course/subject may be followed. Internal Applicants Internal applicants transfer to Year 12 provided they have met the criteria above. There is no upper limit to the number of internal students transferring to Year 12. External Applicants The Published Admission Number for Year 12 is 55 (external students). In the event of oversubscription, priority will be given to (in order): 2. Academic Ability Ranked on predicted GCSE grades from their current school. GCSEs already certificated will be counted. The number of grade 9s will be the first measure, then grade 8s and so on. The Judd School will be the sole arbiter of measures of equivalence when students have sat examinations other than GCSE. IGCSE grades are considered to be equal to GCSE grades. 3. Distance Where predicted grades are the same students will be further ranked by distance from home to School. 4. Random Selection A random selection will be applied should two or more applicants have the same predicted grades and the same distance from home to school. Following results (August 2018), where applicants (who have not previously been offered a place) have achieved better results than their predicted grades, they will be considered based on the grades achieved and ranked accordingly for any places that become available as a result of other students failing to meet the required entry levels. Notes for all Admissions Parent Throughout the criteria the word parent includes all who hold parental responsibility (in law) for a student. KCC Kent County Council is the Local Authority for The Judd School. PESE The Procedure for Entry to Secondary Education organised by KCC includes the selection tests which The Judd School utilises to rank order applicants for entry to Year 7. These tests are sometimes known as the 11+. Selective Score A selective score on the Kent PESE tests is required in order to qualify for a place in a Kent grammar school (though this does not guarantee a place). KCC s aim in setting the selective score each year is to identify 25% of the school population in Kent as grammar. Those not given a grammar assessment (G) are given a high school assessment (H). Children in Local Authority Care Children in Local Authority Care or Previously in Local Authority Care a child under the age of 18 years for whom the local authority provides accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers (Section 22 of the Children Act 1989) or who ceased to be so because they became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order under Part IV of the Act. PAN The Published Admission Number is set by the Governing Body. Right of Appeal Parents have a statutory right of appeal, should an application be refused. Withdrawing Offers After a place has been offered the school reserves the right to withdraw the place in the following circumstances: When a parent has failed to respond to an offer within a reasonable time When a parent has failed to notify the school of important changes to the application information The place was offered on the basis of a fraudulent or intentionally misleading application Distance The distance of a student's home to school is given by KCC and is defined as the distance between the child s permanent home address and the school, measured in a straight line using the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data. Distances are measured from a point defined as within the child s home to a point defined as within the school as specified by NLPG. The same address point on the school site is used for everybody. Applicants may be successful from any area. However parents who live at a distance are asked to consider very carefully whether the daily commute (plus evening/weekend activities) is a reasonable imposition for, e.g. an 11 year old. The school expects that all students will participate fully in all aspects of the school including out of hours activities (e.g. clubs after school, musical evenings, Saturday sport, detentions etc.).
