PCC s Summer Sustainability Institute 010 Curriculum Revisin Plan With supprt frm Prtland Cmmunity Cllege s Sustainability Training fr Technical Educatrs (STTE) grant, funded by the Natinal Science Fundatin, the Summer Sustainability Institute (SSI) ffers high quality and up-tdate training t help instructrs infuse sustainability int their curses. The SSI is designed t supprt faculty in revising their curriculum t integrate current sustainability cncepts, theries, practices, and plicies t help prepare students fr careers in green building design, cnstructin and maintenance. Sectin I: Curriculum Revisin Plan Objectives The SSI Curriculum Revisin Plan helps guide participants develpment f new and/r revised curse curriculum, with the fllwing bjectives: Identify hw faculty will integrate their SSI experiences and new knwledge int their curse curriculum. Align curse revisins with current sustainability cncepts, theries, practices, and plicies. Dcument changes and/r additins instructrs intend t make in their curses r teaching practices. Determine the impact that SSI participants expect frm their curse revisins. Will students: Develp new knwledge and skills relative t sustainability practices? Apply new knwledge and skills t their schl r extracurricular prjects? Change their perceptins and/r chices f curses, degree prgrams, r careers? Imprve their awareness and knwledge f sustainability issues, principles and practices? Change their attitudes tward sustainability principles and practices? Ensure curriculum revisin plans cntain descriptins f essential elements fr effective instructin, including: Specific utcmes r skills that students will prduce r demnstrate Instructinal frmats t be used (lecture, hands-n learning, dem, etc.) Instructinal tls needed (multimedia, technlgy, equipment, materials, etc.) Assessment plans t determine if students have achieved the set utcmes and skills (test, presentatin, prtfli, bservatin by instructr, etc.) The SSI Curriculum Revisin Plan als seeks evaluatin feedback, t assess participants curriculum revisin experiences and t supprt cntinual imprvement in curse revisin effrts. Please cnsider the fllwing questins when develping yur curriculum revisin plan. Hw has the SSI shaped yur curriculum revisin prcess? Hw can the curriculum revisin prcess be imprved? What are the majr challenges in revising yur curse(s)? What resurces d yu need t help yur students reach their learning bjectives?

Sectin II: Curriculum Revisin Plan Revisin f at least ne curse is a requirement f the SSI prgram. The verall purpse f the Curriculum Revisin Plan is t help yu rganize yur ideas in a way that will facilitate integratin f yur sustainability training int yur curses. Revisins shuld include sme new cntent and instructin techniques. Yu will have an pprtunity t share yur ideas with each ther during the week, at the fllw-up Summit n August 0, and via ur web page at www.ppc.edu/stte. We request that yu submit yur cmpleted Curriculum Revisin Plan by August 0 t Kim Smith, the SSI Training Crdinatr, at kdsmith@pcc.edu. Nte that parts f yur plan may be cmbined with ther faculty input fr use in evaluatin reprts, but names and ther frms f identity will be remved t ensure annymity. We appreciate all suggestins t help us imprve the STTE SSI prgram. Table 1. Curse(s) t Revise Identify the curse(s) yu plan t revise using knwledge and skills gained frm the SSI. Cllege/Schl Cañada Cllege, Redwd City, CA Curse Number & Title INTD 50 Materials & Finishes Why did yu chse this/these curse(s) fr revisin? The materials that designers specify generally g thrugh many prcessing steps, cntributing t the carbn ftprint and ften end up in a landfill. Designers need t cnsider the lifecycle f the materials they use and the impact that has n the envirnment ver time. The ther factr t cnsider is the sampling f designer materials and hw t respnsibly recycle, re use, r re purpse n lnger available r needed samples. Table. Impact f Curriculum Revisins n Students Describe the type f impact yu expect yur curriculum revisins will have n yur students. Circle Yes r N fr each type f impact. Then, briefly explain yur expectatins. Will yur curse revisins help students: Develp new knwledge and skills f sustainability principles and practices relevant t the curse(s) and discipline? Lk at it in a different way and mre penly Yes N Apply new knwledge and skills t their schl r extracurricular prjects? Mst definitely. Yes N Change their perceptins and/r chices f curses, degree prgrams, r careers? Yes N Imprve awareness and knwledge f brader sustainability issues within their cmmunities and the wrld. Yes N Change their attitudes tward sustainability principles and practices? Yes N Be better qualified fr jbs. Designers with sustainability backgrund will be in demand Yes N Other: Please describe. Lk at the materials they specify fr clients in a new way Yes N Explain why yu expect this/these impact(s) t ccur. I am hpeful that it will pen their eyes t the impacts f the decisins that they make fr their clients.

Sectin III: Curriculum Revisin Descriptin Use the fllwing guidelines and tables t identify the learning bjectives and instructin techniques yu plan t revise in yur curse(s). They are designed t help yu rganize yur plan fr adding cntent and/r new student learning activities t the curse(s) yu teach. Please cpy and paste additinal tables, if needed fr multiple curses. Table a. Learning Objectives New r revised learning bjectives are essential fr effective curriculum revisins. Write student learning bjectives that describe exactly what yu expect students t be able t d related t sustainability after taking yur curse. Writing these as measurable actins, using actin verbs, rather than in general terms like understand (which is hard t assess) is imprtant. Reference the Verbs fr Measurable Learning Objectives (at the end f this dcument) fr help in setting specific utcmes fr student knwledge and skills. Curse Number and Title: INTD 50 Materials & Finishes Students cmpleting this curse will be able t: Identify and apply the steps in determining the lifecycle and impact n the envirnment t 1 the materials they specify fr a client. Develp strategies and ptins fr the recycling/reuse f materials samples n lnger needed by the designer and apply them. Prvide infrmatin as t life cycle, carbn ftprint, fr a specific material, as cmparisn when determining ptins f selectin fr a client. 5 6 7

New Teaching/Learning Methds Describe any new teaching r learning methds yu plan t use as a result f yur SSI experience (multimedia, technlgy, lecture, hands-n learning, dem, etc.) t help achieve yur new learning bjectives. New Methdlgy: Identify any new teaching/learning technique(s) yu plan t integrate int yur curse(s). Hands-n creatin f a useful item, reusing n lnger needed materials samples frm the 1 department resurce library. Display and prvide instructins fr the class. Creating a resurce list f lcal entities that accept dnatins f n lnger needed designer sample materials fr reuse/repurpse Research assignment f lifecycle and carbn ftprint cmparing tw cmparable materials Hw d yu expect the new teaching/learning methd(s) increase yur students knwledge r skills r change their attitudes? I am hpeful that they will lk at samples and design materials in a new light, dispel sme f the myths abut sustainable materials, create sme great prducts (and get great ideas frm their classmates), dispse f n lnger needed samples mre respnsibly (and usefully) because they knw where they can be taken (besides dumping them in the cllege resurce library r landfill!) r hw they can be repurpsed. Describe hw each new activity will be set up. What must the instructr and/r students d t prepare fr the activity? Identify set-up tasks, equipment, materials, and/r supplies needed t cmplete the activity. Describe what students must d t prepare fr the activity when apprpriate (e.g., reading, studying, frming teams, etc.). Prvide the students with n lnger needed materials frm the department resurce library, and surces f ideas.
