The University Language Programme (ULP) at Nottingham Trent University offers courses in: Arabic Business English (for non-native English speakers) Chinese (Mandarin) English as a Foreign Language (EFL) French German Italian Japanese Spanish Whether you re a beginner or at an advanced level, we ll help and support you to build your ability so that you can communicate confidently. You ll be taught by experienced language specialists, many of whom are native language speakers, so that you can benefit from an authentic language experience. Where do I study? All of our ULP courses take place at Nottingham Trent University s City site. Our Languages Resource Centres at the City site and Clifton campus can provide you with a multimedia environment in which to develop your language skills. A range of high-quality audio-visual materials and books are available, as well as networked PCs for individual learning and quiet study space. When do classes take place? Classes take place during the daytime and evenings during University term-time. A full timetable of classes will be available at our registration sessions and at our online store. How long are classes and how long is the course? Classes are two hours per week for 22 weeks during University term-time. How much private study do I have to do? This will vary depending on whether or not you intend to complete the assessments and what you wish to gain from the course. On average it should take you approximately two hours per week to complete the core Directed Learning, plus time for extension work such as grammar and vocabulary revision. Do I have to take any exams? If you wish to take the assessments and pass the stage you can do so but it s not a course requirement. Who are the tutors? Tutors are all experienced language specialists and many are native speakers in their specialist area. Will I be studying with undergraduates? You may be studying alongside other external students as well as Nottingham Trent University full-time undergraduates and postgraduates. If I register and have to withdraw, can I get my money back? You can claim a refund of the fee, minus a 60.00 administration charge, if you withdraw within three weeks of the start date for your course. After this you will not receive a refund. Will I get credit points I can transfer to other University courses? As an external student you won t receive credit points. Go to www.ntu.ac.uk/ulp to find out more.
How to apply To apply for one of our courses you need to attend a registration session or you may be eligible to register online. At these sessions your level of learning will be assessed by our tutors to ensure that you re placed in the relevant language class. You ll have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have, select the class you want to attend and pay your fee by card or cash. You can register online if you re applying for stage one (beginners), or if you ve successfully completed the previous ULP stage in the same language. If you want to apply for a stage higher than stage one and haven t completed the previous stage, you ll need to attend a registration session. What are the course fees? Go to www.ntu.ac.uk/ulp for course fees. Do I have to take a test at the registration session? No, unless you re applying for EFL or Business English you don t have to take a test. You ll complete a registration form and speak informally to the tutor about any relevant language-learning experience you have. The tutor will tell you which stage you should join. Will I get a certificate? If you pass the assessments, you ll be awarded a Nottingham Trent University Language Programme Certificate of Achievement. Will I get a student card? When you ve paid and completed online enrolment, you ll be able to get a student card. Are there any additional costs? You ll only have to pay for the course fee and course book.
