Future of Simulation Providing Simulation Learning for Distance Education We are Michelle House Kokan RN MSN CNCC(C) Faculty, Critical Care Nursing Program Michelle_kokan@bcit.ca 604 451 7133 @RobNursingEdTec Rob Kruger, RN Med CNCC(C) Faculty, Critical Care Nursing, Simulation and Innovation Rob_kruger@bcit.ca 604 4452 8952 Critical Care Nursing Program Website http://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/680xadcert 1
Who BCIT Is SOHS Located in beautiful British Columbia Spread over 5 campus throughout Lower Mainland Provides both Academic Programs and Trades Schools Offers degrees, diplomas, certificates and Red Seal Comprised of 6 separate Schools Largest School at Burnaby Campus Composed of 32 separate health professional Offer education in face2face, online, hybrid and clinical environments Mandate is to provide education for all of BC World wide reach with international students Students @ BCIT More than 48,000 enrolled annually Approximately 16,000 of these students are distance never attending physically Almost all students have learning experiences that take them away from campus for 3+weeks Students are from all over the World, and even included students in Antarctica. 2
Simulationat BCIT 30 manikins from Gaumard, CAE and Laerdal One of the largest simulation centers in Canada and North America In SOHS and across all campuses, Simulation is integrated into almost all programs Simulation Defined Simulation is considered extension of classroom Many definitions of simulation Creation of a safe, engaging learning environment that allows students to practice skills, decision making and reflection that enhances transition to actual clinical practice (Rob Kruger, 2016). Sim should not be defined by technology or manikins Type of simulation should be guided by curriculum, student learning needs and faculty capacity 3
Learning in Critical Care Nursing Courses are all ipad based using itunesu and ibooks Total of 8 courses can be taken by distance or on campus 6 academic 2 clinical total of 250 hours At least one simulation manikin based experience (on campus) per course 60 %of learners are off campus (distance students) Focus of Critical Care Nursing Simulation Simulation in our program is focused on clinical decision making and critical thinking needed to provide safe and competent patient care. Experience alone does not guarantee higher order learning: Need the integration of reflection (Boud, Keogh, & Walker, 1985) SIMULATION = Patient Care Experience + Debriefing/Guided Reflection 4
CDM Focus and Debriefing Research has shown that significant higher order learning occurs when deep insight is made explicit through reflection during debriefing AT BCIT s Critical Care Program Clinical decision making in simulation is developed through real time decisions in a case scenario, and supported by extensive debriefing with faculty both during and post simulation 5
Problem Defined: How to Provide Simulation Learning for Distance Students Context 1. BCIT Specialty Nursing Expansion 2. Fiscal Restraint 3. Faculty Capacity So we had to get creative as a team 6
Development Process 1. We chose which simulation experience we wanted as our first attempt: not complex, clinical decisions were fairly straightforward 2. We chose the method of delivery: ibook 3. Storyboarding: Team effort that developed the scenes of a case 4. Using tools we are familiar with imovie, keynote, cameras, & our lab Development Process: Storyboarding 7
Development Process Division of Labor: 1. Three faculty members took on the process of video: one as an actor, one as cameraperson, and one as assistant. 2. Two faculty members took on the role of creating educational activities to support CDM. 3. One faculty member put all the components together in an ibook. 4. All faculty reviewed the final product to ensure accuracy and quality. Development Process First offering of a distance simulation ibook was January 2016 All courses now have all distance simulation modules completed and all have been offered at least once Anecdotal feedback from distance students has been extremely positive Formal feedback (via survey) is ongoing and so far very positive. 8
Lessons Learned Anyone can do this! It gets faster with each sim developed Lots of room for improvement: In quality of filming Limited in debriefing due to tools available It is not as interactive as envisioned but is a step towards more virtual simulation Show me Now we will change to an ipad and show you exactly what the student experience is 9
Next Steps Gather further student feedback on the existing distance simulations. Make revisions based on feedback Continue to hone our own faculty skills around distance simulation development as our learning progresses: Graphic animation Improved film design New widgets Thank you Questions 10
