Entry requirements: To be admitted to the Faculty of Law doctoral programme, applicants should hold a postgraduate degree in social sciences such as law or administration, and demonstrate skills necessary to continue their education at a doctoral level; in particular: - be able to carry out general analysis of legal provisions - be able to deploy legal language - be able to make a legal interpretation with the application of its main principles In specific cases determined by the decision of the Faculty Council on recruitment and admissions to doctoral programmes, applicants holding a post-graduate degree in social sciences other than law and administration may also be considered. Applicants who do not meet all of the above requirements, and in particular those holding a post-graduate degree in disciplines other than law, may be admitted to a doctoral programme of studies provided that it is possible to complete the studies by passing appropriate Masters degree modules taught at the Faculty of Law, worth less than 28 ECTS credits. Required additional qualifications are obtained no later than by the end of the first year of doctoral studies and their extent (taught modules to be credited) is determined by the head of doctorate studies, with the agreement of the PhD student s supervisor. 8. Areas of study: social sciences in the following subjects: legal sciences, social sciences, economics. The main areas of study at the doctoral level are social sciences. Due to the profile of studies these are mainly legal sciences. However, obtaining a doctorate is dependent on developing competences in other areas. Research papers that a PhD student will be working on will require, in addition to appropriate legal qualifications, basic knowledge, skills and social skills 2

3 in sociology (methodology of social research) and occasionally also in other subjects, e.g. economics. Obtaining a PhD in law in the course of doctoral studies requires passing a Viva exam in the main subject area of the PhD thesis and a subsidiary subject (economics or philosophy), as well as, in some cases, passing an exam in a modern language if the PhD candidate does not hold an appropriate certificate (specified by the Minister of Science and Higher Education). The above subjects and areas of education, essential for gaining a doctoral degree, are included in the doctoral studies programme, and are adequate to the stipulated learning outcomes. 9. Main aims of studies: Doctoral studies facilitate acquisition of advanced legal knowledge, i.e. at a higher level than during a post-graduate Masters course. In the process, the students also prepare for research and creative (original) work as they are intended to submit a PhD thesis. Graduates from the doctoral studies at the Faculty of Law, the University of Białystok have knowledge, skills and social skills necessary in research and in teaching academic courses. The graduate s qualifications concern, generally and specifically, three main areas: knowledge, skills and attitude (social skills). In terms of knowledge, the graduate gains knowledge not only of theoretical legal issues and of their specific chosen discipline developed under supervision, but also of principles, types and tools for conducting research. Additionally, they acquire knowledge of disciplines which will be the subject of their Viva exam (main subject, a subsidiary and potentially a modern language). In terms of skills, the graduate can choose and determine adequate research methods for a given area (discipline) and deploy these. Using their acquired knowledge, they are able to deal well with practical issues. Additionally, they are able to develop their knowledge independently. Social skills acquired in the course of studies are equally important. These are specifically: -being conscious of the need for continuous professional development, - conviction that ethical and professional conduct is equally important as the knowledge and skills, - ability to work in a research team, - sense of responsibility for the quality of research and teaching work. 10. Programme of studies and the University of Białystok Mission and Strategy: The programme of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Law is compatible with the Mission and the Strategy of the University, approved by the resolution of the University Senate on 25 th March 2009 (No 794). In terms of the Mission, Sections 1 and 2 in particular are implemented 3

4 these refer to three degrees of studies and the concern for the highest quality research, which is the measure of every university in the country and internationally. In terms of the University Strategy, doctoral level study programmes are to enable: - development/ intensification of research, which would be reflected in recognised indicators of research activity, - utilising research results in teaching, - producing high quality graduates well prepared for professional work and for performing public functions, - preparing staff able to function in innovative economy, - ensuring timely doctorates. 11. Consultations of the programme of studies: In preparing the programme of education and in defining the outcomes of studies and preparing the programme and schedules of studies, the opinions of internal and external stakeholders were considered. These included views expressed by doctoral students concerning their expectations and needs (for example through consultations coordinated by the representation of doctoral students at the Faculty of Law); independent researchers and teaching staff at the University of Białystok and other research and teaching staff with expertise in selected areas of education, e.g. teaching methods (consultations conducted by the head of the doctoral studies); representatives of legal professions (consultations coordinated by the authorities of the Faculty of Law). Elective classes, where the doctoral student gains qualifications in modern teaching methods and techniques (as specified in the programme of studies in Table 4, in items 8 and in 13.1), worth between 12 and 14 ECTS credits The indicator for direct participation of students and academic teachers in the programme of studies 1 must be calculated separately each time, allowing for the fact that classes included in modules M_7, M_8 and M_5 require direct joint working of the academic teacher (tutor, module coordinator or supervisor) and the student outside of the compulsory contact hours. Such cooperation is achieved through consultations with the tutor and through their supervision of tasks carried out by the doctoral student. For all classes, the form of cooperation and its extent are agreed in the module syllabus. The majority (more than half) of the classes require doctoral students to be present at the university. VI CONDITIONS FOR COMPLETING THE COURSE AND OBTAINING THE DEGREE According to Art. 2 (10) and (18) of the 27 th July 2005 Higher Education Act (Dz.U. No 164, item. 1365 with amendments), doctoral studies result in obtaining a doctoral degree. 1 According to Art 195 (5) of the Higher Education Act, students are required to attend the university for more than half of the programme of full time doctoral studies, which is delivered through classes and academic research requiring direct participation of academic tutors or supervisors and doctoral students. 17

18 Graduation from doctoral studies and obtaining, through a thesis, the academic title of a Doctor of Legal Sciences in a given discipline requires: - passing the exams and modules envisaged in the programme of studies; - passing a Viva in the main subject of the doctoral thesis and a subsidiary subject (economics or philosophy); - passing an exam in a modern language, unless the candidate has submitted a certificate confirming their knowledge of a modern foreign language, as specified in regulations based on Art. 31 (5) of the Higher Education Act (the Ordinance of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, of 22 nd September 2011 on the summary procedure in doctoral studies, habilitation procedure and professorships) - submission of a doctoral thesis and its defence (Viva). 18
