Summation of Chapter The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter is a society that of which is available for civil engineering students and other students at The University of Mississippi (UM) whom are interested in transportation. The idea for the founding of a transportation engineering society was prompted by Dr. Waheed Uddin and Ms. Lucy Phillips when they returned from the Deep South Institute of Transportation Engineers (DSITE) annual conference in Philadelphia, MS on February 8, 2001. An interest meeting was held in April of 2001 where ITE member Bob Mabry of the Mississippi Department of Transportation gave a presentation on roadway design and ITS, and urged the attending students to apply for a charter for an ITE chapter. An election was held, and 2001-2002 officers were elected to start the application process. The results were: Founder President- Lucy Phillips, Vice President- Justin Spinks, Secretary- Austin Banks, Treasurer- Audrey Stewart, and Faculty Advisor- Waheed Uddin. Following the application process, the chapter was recognized by the university and the national headquarters of ITE. The ITE chapter charter was presented on December 6, 2001. The chapter is included in the University of Mississippi listing of student organizations. The chapter web page was created in March of 2002. Since then, every year new chapter members are recruited and guest lecturers are invited in the Fall and Spring semesters. Elections are held each year in the Spring semester, in order to elect the next year s chapter officers and faculty advisor. Dr. Alex Cheng (Dean of Engineering and former Civil Engineering department head), Dr. Waheed Uddin (faculty advisor), Dr. Yacoub Najjar (Chair of Civil Engineering), and other faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department approve and support the activities of the ITE Student Chapter at the University of Mississippi. Student members are encouraged to participate in DSITE meetings, traffic bowl competition, and paper/annual report competitions every year. DSITE scholarships are announced to students every year. The chapter members and faculty of the civil engineering department appreciate this honor given to one to three student applicants every year at the University of Mississippi. The students who won these awards become very active in chapter activities and motivate other fellow students to participate.. 3

Chapter Meetings ITE chapter officer meetings are held every Wednesday each semester. Scholarships, activities, University of Mississippi Dean of student Affairs required training meetings for student organizations, and other events are discussed at this time. Faculty advisor meets with all officers in the beginning of each semester to discuss plans of activities for the whole semester. The ITE chapter officers also discussed deadlines that must be met such as the annual chapter report, scholarships, and other issues. We also discussed how we can get other students involved in ITE. We always look forward to having guest speakers from industry and government agencies to visit and give lectures on transportation related topics because it gets others involved. Everyone always enjoys the lectures and leaves more informed than when they arrived. A formal Spring chapter meeting is to be held in March where we plan to elect officers for the 2017-2018 academic year. 5

Invited Lectures On November 8, 2016 Mr. Jonathan Kiser (Vice President of Neel-Schaffer) presented the Fall ITE Lecture on South Madison County Transportation Study to the junior student class of Dr. Uddin, CE481 Transportation Engineering I. Bob Mabry (Traffic and Transportation Engineer at B L Mabry Consulting) was also in attendance. Photo: Fall 2016 Semester ITE Lecture, November 8, 2016 The Spring ITE chapter meeting is scheduled in March after Spring break. The main purpose of this meeting is to elect the new officers for the upcoming school year. In addition, this meeting hopes to recruit more underclassmen members in order to grow the organization. The Ole Miss ITE Chapter was not able to attend the Deep South ITE Traffic Bowl Competition in Baton Rouge, LA. Unfortunately, this meeting in January 2017 conflicted with the students winter break and therefore a team could not be formed. The Spring semester starts at University of Mississippi starts in the last week of January 2017. 8

Honors and Awards The Ole Miss ITE student chapter and Department of Civil Engineering would like to thank DSITE and ITE International for their generous annual scholarship opportunity. The Chapter is proud to recognize the following fellow civil engineering student who was awarded the 2016-2017 ITE scholarship. Craig Davis (Graduate Student) Jessica Headrick Dilley (MDOT Planning Division, B.S.C.E 2008 and M.S. 2010 from the University of Mississippi) was honored with the Young Engineer of the Year Award of Mississippi Engineering Society, February 23, 2017. Dr. Uddin was recognized for 25 year service award from UM Chancellor Vitter on December 7, 2016.
