This professional qualification is open to anyone who already has an undergraduate degree. With 40 days teaching practice in schools or early childhood settings, a 45 day internship and a professional research project, this program offers plenty of hands-on experience. You will develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a successful teacher at any level, be that early childhood, health and physical education, primary, secondary or school counselling/ school psychology. Master of Teaching (Health and Physical Education) Page 4 The University of Sydney Graduate-entry program sydney.edu.au Gain the knowledge, skills and practical experience to teach personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) in secondary schools. This program will enable you to evaluate the latest research and knowledge to develop effective and innovative programs for teaching health and physical education. With a strong focus on practical workplace training, your coursework is enhanced by more than four months of practical experience. You ll learn first hand how to tackle everyday teaching challenges during two placements of four weeks each, as well as school visits and a nine week internship in a high school. As part of the final internship you will also complete a professional research project. Master of Teaching (Primary) This program prepares you for teaching all primary school subjects from Kindergarten to Year 6 (K-6). As well as learning about the policies that shape teaching in Australia and overseas, you will attend lectures and complete assignments about issues in teaching, learning and curriculum in the school years from Kindergarten through to Year 6. The coursework covers teaching in multilingual classes, including teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Other key learning areas include: English mathematics science and technology creative and practical arts human society and its environment personal development, health and physical education. If you would like to teach science, mathematics or languages, you may study these as double method areas. Master of Teaching (School Counselling/ School Psychology) Become school counsellor or school psychologist while also qualifying as a teacher in one area of the secondary school curriculum. You will undertake coursework and professional experience in school counselling or school psychology and one of the secondary school program curriculum areas. The varied, interesting and rewarding role of a school counsellor includes: assessing individual children, including children who have disabilities working with children and adolescents who have difficulties in learning and/or behaviour counselling children and adolescents who have mental health and/or behavioural issues interviewing and working with parents and teachers engaging in preventative and proactive school programs with children, teachers and parents researching the needs of children and adolescents participating in up-to-date professional development. Note: there are additional prerequisites for entry to the Master of Teaching (School Counselling/ School Psychology). See page 8. Teaching training is part of the preparation to become a school counsellor. However, this degree is specifically designed to prepare a suitably qualified four-year, psychology graduate to work in the school setting as a school counsellor or school psychologist. Scholarships for successful applicants to the Master of Teaching (School Counselling/ School Psychology) program are available through application to the Department of Education NSW. In NSW, school counsellors are qualified teachers who also have postgraduate qualifications in psychology (honours or the equivalent of a fourth year of study in psychology) sufficient for eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia within the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and a postgraduate qualification such as the Master of Teaching (School Counselling/School Psychology). Entry requirements Page 8 The University of Sydney Graduate-entry program sydney.edu.au Master of Teaching (Early Childhood), (Health and Physical Education), (Primary) or (Secondary) To be eligible to apply for the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood), (Health and Physical Education), (Primary) or (Secondary), you need to have: completed a first degree at an accredited university; for example, a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, with a good academic record proficiency in the use of English (oral and written) and mathematics. Good oral communication is essential. If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of English language proficiency for the Master of Teaching (Secondary), you need to have completed sufficient subjects in your first degree to meet the prerequisites for the secondary school curriculum areas in which you plan to specialise. Master of Teaching (School Counselling/ School Psychology) The Master of Teaching (School Counselling/School Psychology) has the same conditions of entry as those listed at left. You also need to have: completed a fourth year of tertiary studies in psychology that has met the standards required by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council; for example, a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology sufficient tertiary studies to meet the prerequisites for one secondary school curriculum area. Note: a psychology major is a suitable prerequisite for the curriculum area Society and Culture, with the addition of geoscience in Year 1, Semester 1 of the program. How to apply The Master of Teaching has only one intake each year, for studies commencing in Semester One.
