EXCHANGE STUDIES AT THE JYVÄSKYLÄ UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS (JSBE) DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-2018 APPLICATION In order to be admitted to the University of Jyväskylä, please read the application instructions and fill in an online application form for admission at https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/apply/student-exchange/how-to-apply no later than 15 May if you are applying for the autumn semester/academic year or 1 November if you are applying for the spring semester. You will need to scan and attach an official transcript of your university records (i.e. list of courses you have completed so far) in English to the online application. After the International Office of the University of Jyväskylä has received your application form and transcript of records, the School of Business and Economics will process your application. After your application has been accepted, the International Office will send you a letter of admission and information on studying and living in Jyväskylä. Meanwhile you can find the same information at https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/apply/student-exchange. Please note that your application cannot be processed without the transcript. ACCOMMODATION Student housing in Jyväskylä is offered by the Central Finland Student Housing Foundation (KOAS) and Kortepohja student village. Students apply for a student apartment in the same online system in which they apply for admission (Mobility Online). Information on accommodation and application instructions are available at https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/study/day-to-day-life/accommodation_exchange_students Please note that it is considerably easier to find accommodation in the beginning of the spring semester. If you are able to choose the timing of your exchange period, consider coming to the University of Jyväskylä for the spring semester (1 January - 31 May). In addition to the easier housing situation, you can enjoy the Finnish winter at its best during the spring semester.

COURSES Information on courses that are taught in English and are available for exchange students at JSBE can be found at https://www.jyu.fi/jsbe/en/studying/exchange. If the list is not yet available when you fill in the application form, you can make your preliminary study plan based on the courses taught during the previous academic year. Many of the courses will be the same or similar during successive academic years. Exchange students of JSBE can choose courses from the School of Business and Economics and/or from the international study programmes arranged at the University of Jyväskylä, with some restrictions. It is important to choose courses from the right study level (bachelor/master) and to check that you fill in the prerequisites (i.e. that you have completed the required background studies). For example, the Intercultural Communication Minor Programme https://www.jyu.fi/hytk/fi/laitokset/kivi/en/studies/courses/icc-minor is open for all exchange students and can be recommended for students of JSBE. All courses offered for exchange students at JyU can be found at: https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/apply/studentexchange/courses. Please note however, that as a rule, the English studies at the Department of Language and Communication Studies (apart from the Intercultural Minor Programme) are only open to the exchange students of the department in question. Participation in the courses of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences and Department of Teacher Education is also restricted for JSBE exchange students. Please note that the study plan you include in your application does not automatically entitle you to have a place on the courses. You need to register for each courses and exam after your arrival to Jyväskylä through the Korppi online system. During the orientation programme, you will learn how to use Korppi. ACADEMIC CALENDAR Will be available at: https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/study/studies/academic-calendar Exchange students should follow the JyU semesters and participate in the Orientation programme. SEMESTER DATES Autumn semester: 4 September - 15 December 2017 Spring semester: 8 January - 18 May 2018 Please note that exchange students may be required to stay in Jyväskylä until the end of the last month of the semester to receive full grant. Check this from your home university! ORIENTATION PROGRAMME Will be available at: https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/study/studies/orientation-programme LANGUAGE SKILLS REQUIRED Students wishing to study at the University of Jyväskylä as exchange students should be able to follow university lectures in English (or Finnish), participate in seminar discussions and understand written material in their field. In addition, most courses require writing essays and research papers. This means that applicants should be at least B1 but preferably B2 level users of the English language. These requirements do not apply to students whose Finnish skills are good enough to carry out their studies in Finnish.

It is good to brush up your language skills already before coming to Jyväskylä. Please assess your skills in English at https://kielikeskus.jyu.fi/opetus/englanti International students and Master s programmes Exchange students. Based on the results, please attend appropriate courses in English at your home university. To support you academically during your exchange period, the Language Centre of the University of Jyväskylä also offers courses which aim at polishing up your English skills. LANGUAGE COURSES Intensive Summer Course in Finnish (5 ECTS): offered in August 2017 by the University Language Centre. Open to all international students admitted to study at the University of Jyväskylä. Intended for students with no prior knowledge of the Finnish language. Free of charge. Targeted to students whose English language proficiency level is A2-B1 (lower intermediate intermediate). Free of charge. Applicants are requested to assess their language skills using the framework available at https://kielikeskus.jyu.fi/opetus/englanti/proficiency-level-descriptions- 1/assessmentcriteria to find out if the proficiency level is A2-B1. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English. Application form will be available here: https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/en/study/forms/xenx040-intensive-summer-course-in-academic-english NB! It is not possible to take both the Intensive Summer Course in Finnish and in English because the courses overlap. RESIDENCE PERMIT Citizens of the EU/EEA countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom) as well as citizens of Switzerland do not need a residence permit, but they must register their right to reside in Finland if their stay lasts for longer than three months. This can be done at the police station in Jyväskylä after arrival.

Citizens of non-eu/eea countries who wish to stay in Finland for more than three months must be in possession of a residence permit when entering the country. An application for the permit should be submitted to the Finnish Embassy or Consulate in the student s country of origin in good time before arrival in Finland. More information: http://www.migri.fi INSURANCE Citizens of the EU/EEA countries should bring a European health insurance card with them. Additional health and travel insurance is strongly recommended to cover any unexpected expenses such as repatriation, medical transport or damage to personal belongings. Citizens of non-eu/eea countries are required to have their own medical insurance. For studies of less than two years in duration, a citizen of a non-eu/eea country must have private insurance which covers the costs of medical treatment up to 100,000 euros. A residence permit cannot be granted without suitable insurance. For more information on insurances, please contact your local insurance company or consider obtaining your insurance through the Student Insurance Program (SIP). Student Insurance Program (SIP) is the insurance option the Finnish institutions of higher education have negotiated for their international students.
