Improving Teaching Practices through the Use of Video-Case Analysis Lisa Barron, Austin Peay State University Brett Criswell, University of Kentucky CAEP Conference, Spring 2017

Session Overview Introductions Small Group Discussions Whole Group Discussion ATLAS Q&A Explore ATLAS 2

Let s Talk About It 1. How are you shifting the teacher candidate s role to being more in the driver s seat of their own learning? 2. How are you engaging the teacher candidates in deeper practice around planning, instruction, and assessment? 3. How are you providing new windows for teacher candidates to see the often invisible work and thinking of accomplished teachers?

Curriculum Considerations Alignment with CAEP Standards Embed throughout curriculum Field experiences - improve observational skills Hallmarks of an accomplished teacher Tie-in classroom concepts to real-world applications View of how instructional decisions are made

ATLAS is An online professional development resource with: Video examples of teaching with written reflective analyses from National Board Certified Teachers Tools that support focused inquiry into examples of teaching Ways of linking to multiple sets of standards Designed to: Provide pre-service and early-career teachers with examples of accomplished teaching and reflection Support the development of shared professional language and standards of practice Make rich, inquiry based, professional learning opportunities more widely available

ATLAS Cases = NBCT Entries Cases in ATLAS are drawn only from NBCTs, and consist only of entries scoring 3.5 or above All personally identifiable information is removed from entries, and cases are not assigned to districts or teacher preparation programs in the NBCT s state Cases in ATLAS are drawn entirely from entries submitted by NBCTs from 2011 on In that same year, permission forms were changed to explicitly alert candidates that their entries might be used in an online database

Tagging in ATLAS National Board Certified Teachers, university faculty, and other experts are tagging ATLAS cases to standards and frameworks for teaching and learning. Focused on teaching practices: National Board Standards Teaching practices associated with edtpa rubrics High Leverage Practices Focused on students learning: Next Generation Science Standards Common Core State Standards (Math & ELA) Deeper Learning Competencies

CAEP Standard 1 Content and Pedagogical Knowledge The provider ensures that candidates develop a deep understanding of the critical concepts and principles of their discipline and, by completion, are able to use discipline-specific practices flexibly to advance the learning of all students toward attainment of college- and career-readiness standards.

Case #64 Results from Diagnostic Reading Assessment Family Questionnaire Morning Meetings Dr. Martin Luther King I Have a Dream

Case #64 Scripts selected according to reading level and ability Scaffolded instruction by using introducing other learning opportunities about Dr. King ELL students and student with Asperger s individualized conferencing and review of rubric Partnering of students with diverse abilities

CAEP Standard 2 Clinical Partnerships and Practice The provider ensures that effective partnerships and high-quality clinical practice are central to preparation so that candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and professional dispositions necessary to demonstrate positive impact on all P-12 students learning and development.

Case #76 Investigating Force and Motion with Toy Cars 1 st grade Moved from simple observations to examining cause and effect relationship Furthered understanding of scientific knowledge

Case #106 Using Guided Inquiry and Modeling to Explore Heat Transfer Concepts 9 th grade Science Guided student thinking to correct misconceptions Based on feedback from students, teacher challenged them to change the model they were using

For discussion: How Would You Use ATLAS? How may ATLAS strengthen a clinically oriented teacher preparation program? How may ATLAS support teacher candidates to prepare PK-12 students to be college and career ready? How might you envision incorporating the video segments, commentaries and instructional materials into your courses/programs?
