The ultimate goal is for you to develop the ability to look at the world around you and form opinions about it and be able to express those opinions in an educated manner. Students in 10 th grade will... be expected to use cognitive skills in writing, speaking, and reading. critically analyze representative print and non-print material from world cultures and time periods as they explore such genres as epics, novels, short stories, essays, and poetry. become skilled in planning, drafting, and revising two types of informational writing definition and cause/effect. In March, the state will test sophomore students on these writing skills. engage in group discoveries and seminars; complete individual reading of supplemental novels; draft and revise literary, personal essays and stories. learn the research process and create research-based products utilizing technology. If you cheat or plagiarize on any assignment, the minimum consequence will be a ZERO on the assignment, essay, test, quiz, etc. Extra Credit In the event extra credit assignments are offered, they are given to the whole-class and will not be given on an individual basis.

Late/Make-up Work Policy Success in this class is determined by the quality of work that a student produces. That being said, it s imperative that a student completes his/her work in a timely manner. Each day that a student fails to submit his/her work, he/she will lose 10 points for each late day. Since this is an A/B class, meaning this class meets every other day for the entire year, a day equates with calendar days. For example, if the student fails to submit his/her work on a Monday, but he/she does not return to my class until Wednesday, the grade will be deducted by 10 points on Tuesday and 20 points on Wednesday (this is a deduction off the earned score, not perfect score). It is the responsibility of the student to bring his/her work to me even if we do not meet if he/she fails to submit his/her work on time. In the event that an assignment is submitted late, the student must also include a written explanation as to why the work is late. If a student is absent from school, he/she has 5 school days (not class periods) to make arrangements with me to have all work made up. If you are absent, it is in your best interest to check my website and complete all missed assignments before returning to class so you do not get behind on work. In the event a long-term project or essay is assigned, the project will be due on the due date. There will be no score given to a late long-term project or essay if it is not submitted on the due date, even if the student is absent from school, the late work policy (not the make-up work policy) will be enforced. A code zero (principal approved) absence does not justify late work. If a student is going to miss class because of a code zero absence, he should make arrangements with me prior to the absence to make up work that will be missed, and to turn in assignments that will be due on that day. I encourage students to take advantage of educational opportunities that may take them away from campus, but they must be organized in the management of their time when doing so. First offense will result in a warning. 2. Second offense will result in a lunch/after-school detention and a call home. 3. Third offense will result in a referral to the office.

English II is a study in critical analysis of literary texts from a variety of literary canons with a specific focus in World Literature. We will also prepare for the 10 th grade Writing Test. This is a required course for graduation: Student Invest the time, energy, organization, and perseverance necessary to be successful. Take responsibility for all work, whether you are present in class or not. You must initiate teacher contact for make-up work. Participate in class in an active and productive manner. Have all needed materials in class daily. Respect the opinions of others, as you would like to be respected.
