EDUCATION Healthcare Baylor College of Medicine educates healthcare providers and scientists within a diverse array of programs considered among the elite in the world. Degree programs at Baylor include the M.D. program; dual degree programs for the M.D./Ph.D., M.D./M.B.A., M.D./M.P.H., and M.D./J.D.; 12 Ph.D. programs; a doctoral program in nurse anesthesia; a physician assistant program and a master s program in orthotics and prosthetics. A diploma course in tropical medicine prepares individuals interested in this growing field for certification. The College has more than 80 clinical post-doctoral training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Education and 40 approved by the Texas Board as well as postdoctoral training programs for researchers. Practicing physicians from throughout the Texas Center and around the world participate in our continuing medical education programs, including many free online offerings. Research Community Baylor College of Medicine received $348.9 million in total funding for sponsored projects in fiscal year 2014. The scale of Baylor s research enterprise; the exceptional caliber of faculty we attract; and the richness of biomedical research resources within the Texas Center support creativity, innovation, and discovery. In funding from the National Institutes of Health Baylor ranks 20th in the nation in Texas since 2006 7 departments rank in the top 20 in research funding from NIH, including a #1 ranking in Genetics, which has held this position since 2011. Our faculty includes 9 13 12 34 members of the National Academy of Sciences members of the Institute of Medicine of the NAS fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science individuals with NIH career development awards Baylor partners with local leaders to serve the communities of Houston, Texas, and the world through: educational outreach programs that help every student to achieve his or her full potential innovative healthcare delivery models such as the Teen Health Clinics, Baylor Pediatrics AIDS Initiative at Texas Children s Hospital, Healthcare for the Homeless and many others that bring care to underserved communities. research designed to develop new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment that fulfill specific community needs. Baylor is also home to the National School of Tropical Medicine, the only school in the nation dedicated exclusively to patient care, research, education and policy related to neglected tropical diseases, the most common infections of the world s poorest people. Philanthropy In FY2014 Baylor College of Medicine raised $70 million, including a $20 million pledge from the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation for faculty recruitment. The College s $1 billion endowment includes 148 chairs and professorships as well as funds for scientists and research programs. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education recognized the College with a CASE Educational Fundraising Award and a Sustained Excellence in Fundraising Award in 2014. Baylor has been a Better Business Bureau-accredited charity since 2013.
