Orange Coast College Primavera 2014 DOS MUNDOs EN BREVE (4 th. Ed.) Spanish 180 Syllabus Instructor: Jeff Brown Office: Lit. and Lang. 207 Office Hours: M, W 1:00 pm 2:00 pm T, Th 10:00 11:00 am Telephone: Voice mail (714) 432-5046 E-mail Website: Text: jbrown@occ.cccd.edu (I prefer emails) http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown Dos Mundos En Breve (4th. Ed.) by Terrell, Andrade, Egasse, Muñoz.!Hola! The main focus of Spanish 180 is on listening and speaking with reading and writing as supporting skills. Content areas include: expressions relating to daily life, environment, routine activities, and descriptions of people and places. Vocabulary will include simple greetings, leave takings, courtesy expressions, family members, numbers, time, dates, weather, colors, and basic objects in the immediate environment. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend and produce simple sentences dealing with schedules, addresses, telephone numbers, weather reports, short information articles, signs, and postcards. You will also learn about various aspects of Hispanic cultures. The course and the text are based on the Natural Approach to foreign language acquisition. That is, you will be acquiring language in the classroom, as opposed to learning it, much like a child acquires a first language. Emphasis will be on acquisition and not on learning. EXAMS We will cover Pasos A-C and Capítulo 1-Capítulo 5. There will be 3 (three) exams, a final exam, and an oral exam. Yay! The lowest exam score will be dropped and, therefore, will not count. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Exams will be graded on a Curve. Yay. You re welcome. However, the curve for the last exam will be an average of the previous two exams (since often many students don t take the last exam.) If you miss an exam, that s the exam you get to drop. Please do not ask if you can make up an exam. If you miss an exam, you get to drop that one. The final will be cumulative (from Paso A Capitolo 5) and will be administered during the last day of class. The final exam cannot be dropped! The final exam will also be worth 100 points. 1

Exams will be given on the following dates: Exam 1, Pasos A, B, C Wednesday, February 26 Exam 2, Ch. 1 and 2 Monday, April 7 Exam 3, Ch. 3 and 4 Monday, May 5 Final exam Wednesday, May 21 HOMEWORK: You have 3 outside HW assignments This course is worth 5 (five) units. The homework is appropriate for a 5-unit course. Plan to study 10 to 20 hours a week outside of class in order to keep up in class. Homework will be assigned from the Centro online workbook, from the text, and from other outside resources. I. Centro online homework II. Written assignments (from Centro) III. Blue pages assignments from the textbook Centro online homework assignments You have online homework to do from the Centro website. Each Centro online workbook chapter and Paso is worth 10 points. You are to do Pasos A, B, C, and chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (eight total). These are due before midnight on the day they are due. o Paso A is due Thurs, Feb 6 o Paso B is due Thurs, Feb 13 o Paso C is due Wed, Feb 26 o Ch. 1 is due Tuesday March 18 o Ch. 2 is due Monday, April 7 o Ch. 3 is due Thursday, April 24 o Ch. 4 is due Monday, May 5 o Ch. 5 is due last day of class. One online homework assignment (A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) will be dropped Click here for the instructions on how to register for Centro http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/2013%20spring%20sp%20180%20centro%20instructions.pdf The course code is:dbp963 If you did not purchase the textbook new, you can purchase the Centro online supplement separately. After registering and going online, there will be a link that says buy. Click on that link to purchase. It looks like this: Click here to buy the online workbook separately http://www.mhcentro.com/books/ 2

IV. Written Assignments Many of the written assignments from the online workbook will be assigned as outside written homework since most students will never go back and see their corrections. They will be unassigned from Centro and assigned as homework and graded. Each written hard-copy assignment will be worth 10 points. Don t use Google translator to do your assignment, I ll be able to tell and you ll lose points if it doesn t sound right. Better to have your Mom s boyfriend s Mexican nephew help you with it instead. Written assignments will be graded thoroughly. Spelling mistakes = -1; grammar mistakes = -2 points. Any English (besides Walmart, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Orange Coast College, etc) = -1 point. Students can get 1 point extra credit if they type AND spell check their written assignments perfectly. Yay. Click here to learn how to spell check in Spanish http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/2012%20fall%20how%20to%20spell%20check.docx Here is a list of the assignments and their due dates Monday, Feb. 24 http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/a%20b%20ensayo%201.pdf Monday, March 17 http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/1%20esnayo%201.pdf Wed, April 2 http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/ch.%202%20%20ensayo%20number%203.pdf Wed, April 23 http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/3%20ensayo%20ch.%203.pdf Monday, May 5 http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/4%20ensayo%20ch.%204.pdf V. Use a different color pen to make your corrections. If you did it in a blue pen, use a red pen for the corrections. If you did it with a pencil, use a blue pen, etc. Homework turned in without corrections done in a different color will not be accepted. Homework is due at the beginning of the period. Students will not be allowed to do late homework during class time and turn it in on the same day for full credit. Turning in late homework: Students may turn in written homework up to one class period late with a 25% deduction in points. Centro Online HW cannot be turned in late. Please do not ask. 3

OTHER ASSIGNMENTS Spanish Dictionary Your Spanish dictionary will be your first 10 point assignment due the second week of class Wed, September 5. I recommend buying a good Spanish dictionary and spending about $5.00-$10.00 ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION: Attendance is extremely important. You are allowed 2 Almost Free absences Beginning with the third absence, you lose 10 pts. of a 100 point attendance and participation grade. Students who leave early will lose ½ an absence. 3 tardies equals one absence There is no such thing as an excused absence. An absence is an absence. Almost free absences To get those points back, you may (1) attend a museum (preferably MOLA in Long Beach) or (2) watch a Spanish movie. You cannot do 2 of each. You must do one or the other or both. After you watch the movie or go to the museum, you ll need to fill out the required attendance or movie summary slips. Attendance and movie summary slips can be turned on any exam day. Here are the links for the movie summary slip http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/movie%20worksheet.pdf Museum summary slips http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/museum%20visit%20worksheet.pdf The best Spanish director is Pedro Almódovar. English in the classroom During class, English is not permitted, except for the last 10 minutes of class. Students who speak English will lose 1 pt towards their Attendance and Participation grade. Proper nouns in English (those that begin with a capital letter, for the most part, are permitted), examples, 7-Eleven, Home Depot, United Airlines, Manchester United, etc. EVALUATION & ASSESSMENT: Your grade will be based on the following criteria: Chapter exams* 23% Attendance and participation 43 Final Exam 7 Centro Online workbook exercises* 17 Textbook assignments (blue pages), written assignments, etc. 10 Total 100% 4

ADDITIONAL PRACTICE AND STUDY AIDS Dos Mundos Website ( www.mhhe.com/dosmundos ) under student edition 501 Spanish verbs, English Grammar for Students of Spanish (available at the bookstore). Student learning outcomes for Spanish 180: The student will be able to: 1. Recognize and produce the Spanish language at the high-beginning level in the four primary areas of communication: listening, speaking, reading and writing. 2. Demonstrate a better understanding and appreciation of the cultures related to the Spanish language by comparing and contrasting them with the students own culture(s). 3. Use current technologies to further develop their language and cultural competencies. HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE! Practice! Practice! Practice! *Some items may be changed or revised as need be. 5
