General instructions for NRS 395 and NRS 495: Natural Resources Science Research Apprenticeship and Advanced Research Apprenticeship The enclosed form and "learning contract" must be completed by all students receiving credit for NRS 395 or 495. Students may receive 1-6 credits for NRS 395 and 3-6 credits for NRS 495. Final grade is S/U only. Successful completion of either NRS 395 or 495 requires that the student select an NRS faculty member who will be their Faculty Mentor for the research project. The Faculty Mentor helps the student identify the research project and their respective roles for the project, helps the student acquire the necessary skills and equipment, and then s/he evaluates the student upon completion of the research project (see Form A). The attached "learning contract" template should be completed by the student in cooperation with the Faculty Mentor. The Learning Contract must be completed and handed in to the NRS Faculty Mentor BEFORE the student embarks on the research project.

Page 2 of 2 General Outline for NRS 395 or NRS 495 Learning Contract Part I. Learning objectives for your Research Apprenticeship. Describe your learning objectives for this research project. (Learning objectives define what you plan to learn and accomplish with your work). Most students list 3-5 learning objectives for a research project. Part II. Description of the Research Project and your responsibilities a. Project Description: provide a 3-5 paragraph description of the research project that you will be working on. As part of this description, define the context and background of the project so that it is clear you are familiar with the relevant scientific literature. Use the citation style of an appropriate scientific journal. b. Student Responsibilities: describe your specific duties for the project. If you are part of a team project, identify how your specific duties relate to the duties of other members of the team. c. Final Products and Acquired Skills: provide a list of the final products will you produce and the skills will you be able to demonstrate at the conclusion of your research project. d. Evaluation of Student Work: describe how your work will be evaluated. This may include a self-evaluation, evaluation by peers, evaluation by graduate students and staff, and evaluation by your faculty mentor. Please include information about WHO will be evaluating you and HOW these people will be evaluating you. Part III. Requirements of the Faculty mentor and other research supervisors Describe the specific responsibilities of your Faculty mentor as they relate directly to your research project. This description should be written in cooperation with your Faculty mentor. Most students write the description as a list of general and project-specific responsibilities.
