MHA 6501, Advanced Health Care Management Course Syllabus Course Description Explores administrative practice in health care with emphasis on long-term and acute care services, and health care structures, systems, and managerial processes. Topics include operations, planning, marketing, human resources, finance, productivity and control, and emerging trends in health services. Course Textbook Burns, L. B., Bradley, E. H., & Weiner, B. Course Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Explain the primary organizational components of the health care system, understanding the commonalities and differences among health services organizations. 2. Define the roles health care managers must play executive leadership, organizational management, employee motivation, and strategic management while assuring appropriate and timely organizational adaptation and transformation. 3. Discuss the many roles of effective leadership formulating goals, strategize, interactions, communication, decision making, planning, organizing, monitoring, and controlling. 4. Describe methods of managing conflict, concepts of negotiation, and third-party intervention. 5. Distinguish methods for achieving effective management of groups and teams in health services organizations. 6. Explain the relationships among work design, motivation, and information flow. 7. Describe the managerial challenges associated with coordination and communication and the strategies for meeting the challenges. 8. Analyze the decision making process for designing and redesigning organizational structures in health services organizations. 9. Explain the role of strategic alliances in enhancing organizational performance. 10. Discuss the concept of learning organizations and the role they play in health services organizations. 11. Compare the approaches of quality assurance and quality improvement. 12. Analyze the strategies to achieve an effective health care organization. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Unit Learning Objectives: Each unit contains Unit Learning Objectives that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 2. Written Lectures: Each unit contains a Written Lecture, which discusses lesson material. 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. Supplemental Readings are provided in the Unit I-IV, VII, and VIII study guides to aid students in their course of study. 4. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): These non-graded Learning Activities are provided in Units I-VIII to aid students in their course of study. MHA 6501, Advanced Health Care Management 1

5. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are a part of all CSU term courses. Information and specifications regarding these assignments are provided in the Academic Policies listed in the Course Menu bar. 6. Unit Assessments: This course contains eight Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of each unit. Assessments are composed of written response questions. 7. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units I-III, VI, and VIII. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. 8. Research Paper: Students are required to submit for grading a Research Paper in Unit VII. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. 9. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 10. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Unit Assignments Unit I Literature Review In this unit, value and leadership in the health care field has been discussed. Using the CSU Online Library or Google Scholar, locate at least four scholarly articles involving both of these topics. Once you have read the articles, you will compose a four page literature review synthesizing the information from each article. Click here to view the literature review rubric for specific instructions. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Any references or citations used should be in APA style. Unit II Case Study Read Case: Staff Motivation at Sharp HealthCare on pages 113-116. Answer questions 1-3 on page 116. Your response to each question should be at least 300 words in length. You must use at least one source other than your textbook to complete this assignment. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. All references and citations used must be in APA style. Unit III Article Review In this unit, we have discussed teams and communication in the health care setting. Using the CSU Online Library, locate at least one scholarly article involving both of these topics. Once you have read the article, you will compose a three to four page article review by doing the following: 1. Provide introductory details about the article selected. 2. Discuss the purpose of or type of team as presented by the article. 3. Discuss the communication failures amongst the team members. 4. Discuss how the communication failures impeded the team s performance and/or impeded quality patient care. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Any references or citations used should be in APA style. Follow the writing rubric for this assignment. Unit VI Web Assignment The readings in this Unit introduced the Department of Health and Human Services and the sub-organizations it has created to help assist with the delivery of health care and health services. Review the websites of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In your review, include a background on each agency and discuss the services that each agency provides. Overall, compare and contrast the oversight of each of these federal health care agencies. The review should be a minimum of three pages. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Unit VIII PowerPoint Presentation Create a PowerPoint presentation based on your Research Paper. Your presentation should include the following: I. Introduction a. Organization b. Title of person you spoke with c. Topic of Choice (problem facing the organization): Outsourcing Employee shortage Conflict resolution Regulatory Issues Privacy and Security Health Information Technology Leadership Employee Morale Alliances Quality Improvement Initiatives Employee Motivation Globalization II. Review of literature - What did the literature reveal about your topic of choice? III. Recommendations - Your recommendations backed by literature. IV. Reference slide The PowerPoint presentation should meet the following requirements: The PowerPoint Presentation should be at least 10-15 slides in length. This does not include the title slide and reference slides. Citations and details should be provided in the notes section of the presentation The body of the presentation should be 20 point font. Research Paper The purpose of this assignment is to provide you a glimpse into real issues that are faced by Health Care Administrators. In this assignment, you are encouraged to gather more information about your organization and an issue that the organization is trying to overcome (see suggested topics). This assignment will also afford you the opportunity to connect via email or by phone with a professional working in a career that interests you. I. Choose a topic in Health Care Administration. Contact a local health care organization and ask if you could interview a manager or administrator. When contacting the organization, identify yourself as a student in Columbia Southern University s MBA program. Briefly describe your objective when interviewing the manager. Let your interviewee know that you will keep all identifying details (such as his/her name and the name of the organization) confidential. You will need to report the type of organization and the title of the person in which you interviewed. Quality Improvement Initiatives Employee Motivation Globalization You should be sure to ask for background information on your selected topic, detailed notes on how the organization is approaching the issue, what has been done so far, and how it has helped. Also ask what is the next plan of action and how is it perceived to help the organization. Complete this section by Unit II. II. Review relevant literature on your chosen topic and provide an annotated bibliography. Include at least 15 sources in your bibliography. Complete this section by Unit III. III. Write about your organization s history, mission, vision, culture, and structure. Complete this section by Unit IV. IV. In Unit III, you completed an annotated bibliography in which you provided a summary for 15 journal articles on your chosen research topic. Here, you will write an eight page literature review on your topic. The review should be a synthesis of information that you learned from reading the articles. The review should be written in your own words and include in-text citations as appropriate. Refer to the literature review rubric for guidelines. Complete this section by Unit V. V. Discuss how a problem facing the organization impacts your organization. Discuss how your topic of choice (a problem facing the organization) impacts your organization. Discuss how the organization is dealing with this problem. Discuss your recommendations for this organization. Your discussion should be at least three pages in length. APA Guidelines CSU requires that students use the APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed.
