Welcome to Your new school! There are two sections: Information for Parents and Information for Pupils. Information for Parents At Breda Academy, we recognise that the transition from Primary School to Secondary School is a significant stage in the social and educational life of each of our pupils. Therefore, our Year 8 induction programme has been set up so that your child s transition runs smoothly and successfully.
Before Year 8 begins... As part of the Induction Process we have a number of events which we hope will assist your child to settle into life at Breda Academy as quickly and as easily as possible. 1. Parents / pupils will receive a letter and information pack from Breda Academy 2. Pupils will be visited in their Primary schools by Breda Academy staff during the first week of June 3. Parents/pupils information evening on Monday 13 th June 6pm- 7.30. Pupils will have the opportunity to hear from Mr Munro the principal and Mr Galbraith the head of year. The pupils will also meet their form tutor. 4. Pupils will be invited to come to Breda Academy for a visit in the third week of June. This will give your child an opportunity to get together with some of the other children who will be entering Year 8. On this day the pupils will complete short tests in mathematics and English. This is to help us decide the best possible class for your child The first day for year 8 pupils will be on Wednesday 31 st August.
Beginning Year 8 Year 8 pupils will have a few days at the start of September when they will be the only pupils in the school. This will give them an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school environment and procedures in a reassuring and welcoming environment. Pupils will find out which form class they are in during the information evening on 13 th June and meet their classmates and form teacher. The First Term During the first term you will be invited to attend a meeting with your child s Form teacher and in the second term you will be invited to a consultation evening with subject teachers. Your child will receive a written report after the Christmas exams and another in the summer term. The Curriculum Year 8 pupils study a wide range of subjects, including: English, Maths, History, Geography, a Modern Language, R.E., P.E., Science, Art, Music, Technology, Home Economics and Learning for Life and Work. Your child will be given a school diary. Homework s must be recorded in this and parents must sign the diary each week. We hope that your child settles in quickly to become part of the Breda Academy community. Extra-Curricular Here at Breda Academy we offer a wide and varied extra- curricular programme. We would encourage all pupils to participate in at least on extra-curricular activity. It is an excellent way to build social skills, confidence and learn new skills.
Pupils will be provided with a full list of activities during September. Information for pupils Advice from our current Year 8 pupils Erin says Be polite to all members of staff and be equipped for school! Curtis says Knowing your way around is a breeze. It s simple once you know your way around the school! Don t worry, homework isn t a complete nightmare. Don t be afraid - the teachers don t bite. Travis says Be nice to other children, so that you can make new friends. Never be late for class and bring the correct equipment for each subject. Most importantly; enjoy Breda Academy! James says Be yourself, tuck your shirt in and treat your teachers with respect. Keelan says Keep your map and timetable on you at all times so that you don t get lost. Tegan says Breda Academy is a big school with a lot of pupils, so if you get lost, don t worry, just ask one of the pupils. Try and make as many friends as you can, so that you can help each other. Make your school uniform neat and come to school on time. My best tip is: Try your Best!
(FAQs) Frequently Asked Questions I ve been told that I am going to Breda Academy in September 2014. What happens next? You will receive a letter from Breda Academy. We will tell you when we will be visiting you at your Primary school and when you will visit us at Breda Academy. Who will visit me at my Primary School? You will be visited by one or more of the following people: Mrs Parry- Head of Junior School Ms McCullough Senior Teacher Mr Galbraith- Head of Year 8 We will have a chat with you about Breda Academy and what to expect when you begin school. We will also be able to answer any questions that you might have about your new school. Don t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they sound silly! When will I visit Breda Academy? Visits usually take place during the second or third week of June. You will spend the morning with us. What will happen during my visit? You will meet the Principal (Mr Munro), your Year Head and the Head of junior school. You will complete two short tests in Maths and English. Please do not worry about these tests; they are for us to be able to place you in the correct classes for September. Break will be provided for you on this day.
What do I need to wear during the visit? You can come in your Primary School uniform or your normal clothes. When is my first day at Breda Academy? Your first day as a Breda Academy pupil will be on 31 st August 2016. What are the school rules? The full list of school rules will be printed in your student planner. At Breda Academy we have three simple rules for students behaviour and attitude. We expect students to Treat other members of the school community and visitors with courtesy and respect.
