The Giver Connecting Science Fiction with Today Using EBSCO Points of View database read, research, and create a group presentation connecting a current societal issue to The Giver. Access this database through the Maple Mediapprentice Web site. The username/password are ngsdmaple. STEP 1: Choose one of the following issues. Pick an issue that you feel connects with your reading of The Giver. Behavior drugs and children Banning books Censorship and democracy Population growth Climate change US borders Cloning in humans School uniforms Electronic surveillance Same Sex Marriage Euthanasia Sex selection and cosmetic genetics Death penalty/capital punishment Please have your group s topic approved by Mrs. Howard. STEP 2: Log into EBSCO Points of View and access research on your topic. You will find an overview as well as several points of view on the subject. READ an overview as well as at least two points of view on your topic. Take notes in Google drive or the graphic organizer provided. STEP 3: Make a maximum eight-slide Google Slides presentation on your issue. Add the following information: 1. Summarize the topic and explain in 7 th grade language (1-2 slides). 2. Summarize both (opposing) points of view on the topic (2-3 slides). 3. Find a powerful graph, quote, or statistic to incorporate. 4. Locate at least one picture (you will need to add this to Google Slides from a computer). 5. Three specific text connections to The Giver. Use quotes from the text and page numbers (1-3 slides). 6. Based on your reading of The Giver, what is Lois Lowry s position on your issue? (1-2 slides). Be sure to take a stand and be specific about why you think she feels one way or the other. Include at least two pieces of evidence from the text to support your position (these may or may not be pieces of evidence used for the group s three text connections).
