CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: Fine Art Commission Liaisons Nancy Hunt-Coffey, Director of Community Services DATE: November 13, 2017 SUBJECT: Proposed loan of Sense of Place by Jose Davila as part of Pacific Standard Time As indicated on the attached information, Sense of Place is a multi-site, large scale public sculpture exhibition that will be taking place in a number of locations throughout the Los Angeles area. It is part of the Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time program. Sense of Place is comprised of a number of pieces which fit together to create a cube. The entire cubic piece is was first installed in West Hollywood Park, and it is currently being taken apart into 40 pieces that will be placed in different locations. The proposal at hand is to place one of these 40 pieces somewhere around the Beverly Hills City Hall campus. The piece would be installed in Beverly Hills by March 2018 and would be on exhibit for about 2 months, after which time all of the pieces will be reassembled back into the cube. There would be no cost to the City for this temporary loan. The Council liaisons are asked to make a recommendation regarding this proposed loan.

Sense of Place was derived from Davila s Joint Effort sculpture series which expands the concepts of balance and equilibrium using basic costruction materials such as concrete blocks and stones. In continuation of this exploration, Sense of Place consists of an eight-foot square cube sculpture comprised of 40 individual concrete conjunctional forms. Initially installed in West Hollywood Park, over the course of nine months the sculpture will slowly disassemble its various pieces, migrating to far-reaching locales of the city such as landmarks, significant architectural sites, community hubs, shopping malls, bus stops, etc., taking on different functional forms at each location. In this sense the pieces become a social platform promoting interaction with the public, who will ultimately decide on the final function of the artwork.
Sense of Place is built in six layers and will transition in three movements, positioning the modular pieces in their temporary surroundings for a period of two to six months. In its final iteration, the sculpture will return to its original whole cube re-installed at West Hollywood Park holding its travel histories in its reunited form. Treating the entire city as an exhibition space is a gesture that will both expand and enrich the Los Angeles cultural community, and bring art to new audiences. Commissioned by LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) and part of the Getty s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, Sense of Place in Davila s largest public undertaking to date and his first major exhibition in Los Angeles.

About Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA Jose Dávila s site-specific public sculpture is organized by Los Angeles Nomadic Division, as part of the Pacific Standard Time initiative. PST began in 2002 as a Getty initiative to recover the historical record of art in Southern California. Supported by grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. LAND LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) was founded in 2009 as a non-profit public art initiative committed to curating site and situation-specific contemporary art projects, in Los Angeles and beyond. LAND believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience innovative contemporary art in their day-to-day experience in order to develop new ideas and ways to thinking about their world. In turn, artists deserve the opportunity to realize projects, otherwise unsupported, in the public realm to present their unique ideas. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of The Getty.
