STRAUS INSTITUTE FOR DISPUTE RESOLUTION 2017 FALL COURSE SCHEDULE NOTICES ADVANCE ASSIGNMENTS FOR INTENSIVE COURSES AND OBSERVANCE OF RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS A class syllabus including any advance reading and/or writing assignments for intensive classes will be emailed to students 3 4 weeks prior to the start of class. Please note that it is each student s responsibility to review the syllabus well before the class begins and complete any advance assignments. Students who show up the first day unprepared risk being dropped from the class. If a student intends to miss one or more classes for religious observance in an intensive course (i.e., one that runs for a shorter period than a regular semester term), he or she must notify the Academic Dean prior to registering for that intensive course to determine whether such absences would fundamentally alter the nature of the intensive course. RESCHEDULING EXAMS While most Straus classes will require a final paper instead of a final exam, it is important for everyone to be aware of the exam rescheduling policy in the event you enroll in one or more classes with a final exam. Students may not petition to reschedule a final exam unless two final exams are to be taken on the same day. Therefore, it is important for you to pay attention to the final exam schedule when you are selecting your courses. Petitions to change one of two exams scheduled for the same day must be filed by the seventh week of classes. For additional details concerning the law school final exam policies go to http://law.pepperdine.edu/academics/policy/. EXTERNSHIP ENROLLMENT Students cannot register for externships through WaveNet. All students are required to have their externship placement confirmed before they can register for the externship. Please submit an add/drop registration form http://law.pepperdine.edu/current students/content/registration adddrop.pdf to Joanna Reese at joanna.reese@pepperdine.edu or (310) 506 4437 together with the placement information form http://law.pepperdine.edu/straus/content/placementform.2014.pdf. All externships should be completed within the semester registered unless prior permission has been granted for extended time. A full description of the externship requirements are available on our web site at: http://law.pepperdine.edu/straus/academicprograms/externships/current students.htm. LL.M. INDEPENDENT STUDY ENROLLMENT Students needing to enroll in a required LL.M. Independent Study Project need to speak with Professor Sarah Park prior to enrolling. NEW ADJUNCT FACULTY MEMBERS Richard Birke is a JAMS consultant and has taught dispute resolution for more than 20 years. He is a law school professor and director of the Center for Dispute Resolution at Willamette. Under his leadership, CDR has enjoyed more than a decade of high national rankings in the US and is the 2012 winner of the Ninth Circuit ADR Education Award. Mr. Birke is a two time award winning author, as well as an ADR neutral, consultant and trainer. Professor of Law; Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution; Director of the Certificate Program in Dispute Resolution LL.M. Harvard University J.D. New England School of Law, cum laude B.A. Tulane University. Professor Birke has taught dispute resolution for more than 15 years, starting his career at Stanford University and coming to Willamette University College of Law in 1993 to teach and direct the Center for Dispute Resolution. Under his leadership, the CDR has enjoyed high national ranking among academic dispute resolution centers in the United States. He is an award winning author in the field of dispute resolution, and he has been deeply involved in the practice of ADR.

Stephen C. Lepley is the Director of Operations, Student Recruitment and Marketing for Pepperdine University School of Law s Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution and an Adjunct Professor of Law. He is a founding and managing Member of California Dispute Resolution Professionals, LLC, a firm specializing in the mediation of civil litigated cases throughout Southern California and Arizona. He holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Dispute Resolution with a Concentration in Mediation from Pepperdine Law, earned his J.D. from Marquette University Law School, and his B.S. in Psychology from Tulane University. His work as a trial and appellate lawyer representing private, institutional and government clients for several decades included appointments as a County Corporation Counsel in his native Wisconsin, where he served as head of the municipal corporation s department of law, advising more than twenty five departments and representing the county in all of its civil litigation. As an Assistant Attorney General, he later represented Arizona s Department of Revenue in appeals of statewide importance tax cases involving the valuation of billions of dollars of airline, mining, telecommunications and other utility property. In subsequent appointments as an Arizona Assistant Attorney General and Chief Counsel, he led a team of lawyers that pursued civil racketeering and other financial remedies against criminals and criminal enterprises, conducting highly complex multi week trials and arguing several dozen appeals in recovering more than $250 million in assets for distribution to victims and law enforcement agencies while receiving several national and international awards for excellence in law enforcement. In nearly a decade of private trial and appellate law practice, Steve represented clients in cases involving breach of contract, real property title, tort, broker liability, civil rights discrimination, wrongful discharge, and public employee whistleblower protection. He is a member of the State Bar of Arizona, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Mediation.org, the Association for Conflict Resolution, and the Southern California Mediation Association.
