COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course consists of functions, inverse functions, systems of equations, matrices and determinants, polynomial equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, conic sections, the binomial theorem and sequences. Access to the world wide web is required to perform homework and other assignments for this class. Most Student accessible PC s on any TCC campus have the necessary access if it is unavailable to you elsewhere. TEACHING METHODS: This is a 3-hour lecture course that utilizes the Pearson Higher Learning software platform MyMathLab. There will be an initial review assignment, homework, practice exams, chapter exams and a comprehensive common Final Exam. MYMATHLAB.COM We will be using an internet based program with our text this semester called MyMathLab.com. For those of you (which will be most) who have not used MyMathLab.com before, don t worry, we will be going through this together in class. In order to access MyMathLab.com you will need to direct your web browser to http://www.mymathlab.com. Under the students section you will need to register. You must have a valid e-mail address (use your MyTCC address) before you can register. You will also need a course code in order to access my course. The course code for this class is phillips06351. There are tutorials and homework problems on this site which can help you immensely and I will be posting notes for each class period on the site. You will also need a student access code which you can either purchase in the bookstore or purchase online with a credit card at the mymathlab.com site (they will walk you thru the registration process, and the schools zip code is 74107). Please write your username and password in the blanks so you will not forget them (I suggest you use your same Blackboard log on name and password to avoid confusion). ALL CLASS COMMUNICATIONS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM WILL BE THROUGH THIS ACCESS. Username: Password: COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Find the domain and range of relations and functions; both graphically and algebraically. 2. Perform operations on functions, including compositions. 3. Analyze polynomial equations and inequalities; both graphically and algebraically. 4. Perform matrix operations. 5. Apply the properties of logarithms to solve exponential and logarithmic equations. 6. Solve problems involving sequences and series. 7. Analyze functions and relations including polynomial, piecewise, and conic sections; both graphically and algebraically. 8. Analyze real-world situations using appropriate mathematical strategies. EVALUATION TECHNIQUES: Review Assignment and Homework: There will be an assignment on MyMathLab to make sure you have the basic concepts necessary for College Algebra. This assignment can be found under the Homework button. There will also be homework assignments due each week on MyMathLab. Each homework assignment will encompass the material covered in class during the week. Each weekly homework assignment and the review assignment will be averaged for a total of 100 points. You can find the due dates for each homework assignment on the tentative schedule. Quizzes: Before each exam there will be a quiz (posted in MyMathLab under the Quizzes & Tests button) which includes the most difficult questions from the covered materials. You may attempt each quiz only once. Every completed quiz builds the study plan and is intended to assist you in preparing for the exam, as such, every fully (honestly) attempted quiz will earn a 90% or better (adjusted at the end of the semester.) Chapter Exams: There will be chapter exams following completion of every chapter, worth 100 points each. The schedule for these can be found on the tentative schedule. Final Exam: We will take a comprehensive Final Exam. This is a common final taken by all College Algebra students here at TCC. There is an available open review for this exam. ATTENDANCE: Attendance is necessary to successful completion of the class. Absence of part or all of four (4) or more classes or falling more than six (6) assignments behind, may result in an administrative withdraw at the discretion of the professor. Students who have not attended any class in the first two (2) weeks will be given a WN. All Homework and exams for this class will be on MyMathLab.com, it is the student s responsibility to access and enroll in this class on the MyMathLab website. COURSE WITHDRAWAL: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of F, which may have financial aid consequences for the student. The last day to withdraw is Friday, November 11, 2016. COMMUNICATIONS: Email: All TCC students receive a designated MyTCC email address (ex: jane.doe@mail.tulsacc.edu). ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty this faculty member will: Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services. INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT: Each student is responsible for being aware of the information contained in the TCC Catalog, TCC Student Handbook, Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook, and semester information listed in the class schedule. You should always make an appointment in advance to ensure you will have time with a tutor. Appointments will be given priority and walk-ins will be seen as staff and time permit. To make an appointment (at least 24 hours in advance) call the Math Center at 595-8196 or e-mail at teresa.thompson@tulsacc.edu. When making an appointment you will need to state the class you are working on and also be sure to give your phone number so you can be reached in the event your session must be rescheduled. The tutors will not work problems with you. They are there to help you understand the concepts, not do your homework. If you miss class it is not the tutor s responsibility to teach you the missed material. STUDENT S EFFORT EXPECTATIONS: To be successful in this class, and most college level coursework, a student must be mentally, emotionally and physically prepared. Commit yourself to the following things, among others, and they will contribute greatly to your success. To be successful in this class a student must: 1. Be present 2. Be prepared 3. Be well rested 4. Have completed all assigned work 5. Have made provisions for distractions (a stand in sitter, alternative means of transportation, organizing work schedules, informing family and friends of education s priority) 6. Believe you can succeed ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES/TIMES: All assigned work (homework, quizzes and exams) are due by 1:00 PM on the date assigned, failure to submit the work before 1:00 PM will result in penalty or inability to submit resulting in a zero for the assignment. LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP WORK: Late completion of homework will be allowed to the last week of class with a 2% per day penalty for tardiness. Tests end dates are absolute and cannot be made up or retaken, for any reason. If you must miss an exam contact your professor prior to the exam to determine if alternatives can might be arranged for completing the exam at another time and place. Failure to inform the professor prior to the exam taking place will result in a zero score for the missed exam. GRADE CALCULATION: Homework: Quiz average: All exams average TOTAL: 89.5-100% A 79.5 89.4% B 69.5 79.4% C 59.5 69.4% D Less than 59.5% F 45 percent of final grade 5 percent of final grade 50 percent of final grade 100 percent NOTE: to earn an A in this class the student must achieve an 80% or better average on all exams. To earn a B the student must have a test average of 70% or better. To pass the student must maintain a 50% or better average on all exams. GRADE REDEMPTION/ REVIEW: Students who take an exam as scheduled will usually be given opportunity to retake the exam earning the better of the two scores. Students for whom both scores are less than desirable, and who have not missed any classes, have completed 100% of the homework assigned to date, and have made use of the available tutoring may be allowed a third take at the discretion of the professor. Any grade dispute must be brought to the attention of the professor in writing within five (5) days of the grade being recorded. SPECIAL GRADES: Issuance of special grades (AW-Administrative withdraw, or I-Incomplete) may be given at the request of the student when exceptional circumstances are present and are solely at the will of the professor. In order for a special grade request to be considered, the student must be passing the class at the time the request is made. On MyMathLab if it has a due date it is assigned! STUDENT PRIVACY: All student grade summaries, scores and attendance records will be provided to the appropriate TCC departments and to the student. No other persons will be given any students information, except where mandated by law. Parental, guardian or spousal requests for information will not be recognized or accommodated. IN CLASS USE OF TECHNOLOGY: The use of personal computers in class are permitted for note taking only, a student who wishes to utilize a computer for this purpose must prove their ability to make mathematical notation on the computer, any other use will result in the student being asked to leave the class. Recording of the instructor s voice or likeness is permitted for individual student study purposes only and may not be shared or published in any way. CONFLICT RESOLUTION PROCEEDURE: Any issues concerning this class, its participants or instructor must first be brought to the instructor, if satisfactory resolution is not obtained through discussion with the instructor, the student, or other interested party, is encouraged to address the matter to the Math and Science Faculty Chair, Diane Trimble (918.595.8200, diane.trimble@tulsacc.edu). If resolution is not found with the Faculty Chair Contact Dr. Lyn Kent, Dean, School of Math and Sciences.
