INTRODUCTION You can obtain access to the Profession of Biomedical Laboratory Technologist (Tecnico Sanitario di Laboratorio Biomedico) through two different way: If you want to become an Italian Biomedical Laboratory Technologist you need by following: (COURSE A). For this issue you have to be admitted in the Italian Universities and obtain the Bachelor Degree of Biomedical Laboratory Technology/Techniques, (Bachelor in Tecniche di Laboratorio Biomedico, abilitante alla Professione del TSLB). For admission to courses the candidate must already be at least 17 years old at the moment of the "study/university registration" visa's release. An important requirement for admission is the knowledge of the Italian language, which will be tested at the location of the candidate's University of choice and it is compulsory for all courses. The Italian language exam is not required if the course is carried out exclusively in a foreign language. If you are admitted in an Italian university your previous course of study can be examinated by the Bachelor Committee and part of your career can be considered and recognized. At the end you can obtain your final Bachelor degree and work in Italy as Biomedical Laboratory Technologist in all Italian Biomedical Laboratory of the Health System of the country. You can exercise the profession being recognized by the Italian Ministry depending on whether you are communitary (COURSE B.1) or an extra-communitary citizen (COURSE B.2). The first way (COURSE B.1) is based on the equivalence of degree and is valid only for citizens of the European Union according to the 2005/36 CEE directive The European Union Treaty provides for the free movement of workers within the Community and in particular, regulates the right of establishment which invests any working activity carried out in the system of non-subordination and stability. The Directive 2005/36 identifies the procedures provided for EU citizens wishing to obtain recognition of their professional qualifications in Italy. The Directive applies to all citizens of the 27 European Union member states (EU), as well as to citizens of Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, who wish to pursue a regulated profession in a Member State different from that in which they obtained their professional qualifications either as self-employed or as employees. The Directive provides in addition to the "freedom of establishment" the possibility of "freedom to provide services. The second way is based on the equivalence of degree and is valid also for members from outside EU/EEA The second way (COURSE B.2) allow an evaluation of the educational and professional situation of the applicant. A commission composed by local BLT and part of the Health Ministry will study your situation and will define a which subject you have to study in order to acquire the equivalent diploma ( misure compensative ). In this case is possible that the applicant would study in the Italian university for some months. 1

The directive applies to all citizens of a member state who want to work as employees be selfemployed or as free practitioners in a regulated profession in a member state different from that in which they obtained their qualifications. The procedure For the recognition of a degree in the health sector obtained within the EU, EEA, or Switzerland in order to exercise the corresponding health profession in Italy, the interested must present an application/request to the Ministry of Health together with the necessary documents as indicated in the application form. In the case of incomplete application, the office will request the missing documents. At the end of the evaluation period the following can be issued: -decree of recognition -temporary recognition pending the completion of a compensatory measure. COURSE B.2 Access to profession through the equivalence of degree Recognition of professional titles for health workers obtained outside EU/EEA, with the purpose of exercising their profession in Italy as Biomedical Laboratory Technologist. (Tecnico Sanitario di Laboratorio Biomedico) The procedure FAST GUIDE The recognition of professional qualifications obtained outside the EU/EEA requires some formalities more in terms of the documentation that must be submitted. In particular, in forwarding the request for the recognition of professional qualifications you will have to produce, among other things: residence permit; the declaration of local value (the translation of foreign qualification in Italian indicating equivalency ) For the recognition of a degree in the health sector obtained outside EU/EEA in order to exercise the corresponding health profession in Italy, the interested must present an application/request to the Ministry of Health together with the necessary documents as indicated in the application form. In addition some certain documentation must be submitted together with the request for the recognition of professional qualifications obtained outside EU/EEA.
