Rationale All new and revised National Courses reflect Curriculum for Excellence values, purposes and principles. They offer flexibility, provide more time for learning, more focus on skills and applying learning, and scope for personalisation and choice. In this Course, and its component Units, there will be an emphasis on skills development and the application of those skills. Assessment approaches will be proportionate, fit for purpose and will promote best practice, enabling learners to achieve the highest standards they can. This Course provides learners with opportunities to continue to acquire and develop the attributes and capabilities of the four capacities as well as skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work. All Courses provide opportunities for learners to develop breadth, challenge and application, but the focus and balance of the assessment will be appropriate for the subject area. Relationship between the Course and Curriculum for Excellence values, purposes and principles The National 3 Fashion and Textile Technology Course builds on both the health and wellbeing and the technologies principles and practice papers. The Course allows learners to develop fashion/textile items using a range of fashion and textile contexts and explore fashion/textile trends. The focus on fashion encourages learners to consider their personal preferences and appreciate factors that influence the fashion and textile choice of others. In this way learners will begin, through fashion and textile activities, to develop the personal attributes of selfawareness, self-worth and respect for the opinions of others. The Course, with its focus on practical fashion and textiles, will develop the following technological skills: identifying ideas for fashion/textile items; preparing to make fashion/textile items by choosing appropriate textiles, construction techniques and equipment; using equipment and tools safely; making fashion/textile items; and reviewing completed fashion/textile items. Learners will also have the opportunity to develop skills of problem-solving, making informed choices and taking responsibility for the development of an idea through to a completed item. They will also continue to acquire the attributes and capabilities of the four capacities as well as: an enthusiasm and a willingness to learn; perseverance, resilience and independence; responsibility and reliability; and confidence and enterprise. Purpose and aims of the Course The main purpose of the Course is to develop the skills and knowledge to support practical fashion/textile activities. The skills that learners acquire by successfully completing the Course will be valuable for learning, for life and for work. June 2013, version 2.0 2

This Course will provide an opportunity for learners to develop their ideas and follow plans to make basic fashion/textile items. The aims of the Course are to enable learners to develop: basic textile construction techniques ability to make basic fashion/textile items basic knowledge of textile properties and characteristics basic knowledge of a range of factors that influence fashion/textile choice basic knowledge of fashion/textile trends the ability to select and use relevant tools and equipment safely decision-making and reviewing skills Particular emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills and textile construction techniques to produce basic fashion/textile items to an appropriate standard of quality. The Course will also help learners develop knowledge of textile properties, characteristics and technologies, item development, fashion/textile trends and factors that affect fashion choice. This Course will help learners to develop important skills, attitudes and attributes related to fashion and textiles that are transferable to other contexts, including problemsolving skills and communication skills. The Course may also contribute towards the development of numeracy skills through the measurement of textiles and timing of production. Information about typical learners who might do the Course This Course is a practical qualification suitable for all learners with an interest in fashion and textiles. It is particularly suitable for learners who enjoy experiential learning through practical activities and who wish to study fashion and textiles for the first time. The Course provides opportunities for learners to develop and enhance practical skills and textile construction techniques through a range of learning activities. It also allows learners to develop basic knowledge of textile technologies, the item development process and factors affecting fashion choices. Course activities also provide learners with opportunities to build self-confidence, thinking and decision-making skills and skills in planning and organising of practical tasks. Potential progression routes from this Course include opportunities for vertical and lateral progression to other National 3 and National 4 Courses; National Progression Awards; and further education or employment/training in textiles, fashion and related fields. June 2013, version 2.0 3

SQA will provide rigorous external quality assurance, including external verification, to ensure assessment judgments are consistent and meet national standards. The assessment of the Units in this Course will be as follows: Fashion and Textile Technology: Textile Technologies (National 3) In this Unit, learners will be required to demonstrate basic knowledge and skills related to textile technologies by making basic fashion/textile items, using a pattern and a range of textile construction techniques, to an appropriate standard of quality. This will require the learner to be aware of the characteristics and properties of a range of textiles and their uses and select appropriate textiles for the chosen fashion/textile items. Learners will also be required to select tools and equipment, and use them safely. Fashion and Textile Technology: Fashion/Textile Item Development (National 3) In this Unit, learners will be required to work, with support, to given briefs to develop basic fashion/textile items based on a chosen fashion/textile trend. Learners will explore fashion/textile trends before identifying one specific trend, selecting a solution and identifying appropriate textiles for fashion/textile items. They will follow a given work sequence to make basic fashion/textile items, based on the trends, to an appropriate standard. Learners will select and use tools and equipment safely. Fashion and Textile Technology: Fashion and Textile Choices (National 3) In this Unit, learners will be required to identify factors affecting the fashion and textile choices for a given group of consumers.
