MINUTES SISD SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL SOCORRO ISD DISTRICT SERVICE CENTER August 16, 2017 MEMBERS PRESENT *Please see attached I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:36 p.m. by Leslie Sanchez. II. Approval of the Minutes Gloria Yanez motioned the approval of the minutes for April 12, 2017. Sylvia Carbajal seconded, council voted and the minutes were approved. III. BASICS Program Presentation NAMI El Paso NAMI El Paso provides advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental health conditions can build better lives. This agency provides classes to students in classes as follows: - Class 1: Introduction It s not your fault; Mental illnesses are brain disorders - Class 2: The biology of Mental Illness; getting an accurate diagnosis - Class 3: Treatment Works; Telling your stories review of various types of mental health professionals - Class 4: Objective and subjective family burden - Class 5: The systems involved with your child and the importance of record keeping - Class 6: Advocacy, Review, Sharing and Evaluation IV. #TeamSISD Healthier with Smart Snacks USDA is rolling out a rule that will make sure that kids can buy only healthy snacks in schools. Ms. Shelly Chenausky, Child Nutrition Services Director, presented the healthier snack choices getting into SISD campuses as well as contents and the new vending machines who are operating in SISD campuses and the healthier part in them. V. New Business Ms. Becky Madrid and Ms. Rachel Tarango presented a new School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) initiative which will consist of moving afternoon SHAC meetings to mornings in conjunction with the Volunteer Program parents in their bimonthly meetings. This transition will allow for more parental involvement, which is the primary purpose of the SHAC. VI. NEXT MEETING October 25, 2017 Rooms C&D at 8:00 am VII.
