MGT351 Organizational Innovation and Change Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend 14-20 hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes Course Description: This course provides analysis of the dynamics of change and the importance of innovation within modern organizations. Emphasis is placed on how managers can develop a culture receptive to new ideas, products, processes, and systems for improving organizational performance. Course Overview: Today s business environment produces change in the workplace more suddenly and frequently than ever before. Mergers, acquisitions, new technology, restructuring, and downsizing are all factors that contribute to a growing climate of change, reorganization, and uncertainty for today s businesses. This course explores these areas in more detail by introducing students to the stories of change and the challenges in managing change, while examining the need for organizational change in today s highly competitive business climate. It explains the factors that affect organizational change, why there is resistance to change, and the requirements for implementing successful change. It also examines the connection between a company s vision and the requirements surrounding change necessary to keep a company competitive in a highly competitive global economy. Finally, the course will provide the opportunity for students to understand how change is communicated and sustained within a business organization both critical components of achieving meaningful change and creating new business possibilities for a business organization.

Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Describe the complexity of change in light of organizational elements and limitations. 2. Explain the concepts and differences of management as control and management as shaping. 3. Identify the images of managing change and relate them to the constructs of management control and shaping. 4. Explain how and why environmental pressures drive organizations toward change. 5. Assess the use of diagnostic models and assess one model s usefulness with various types of change. 6. Describe the importance of an organization s vision to the effectiveness of managing change. 7. Illustrate the concept of embedded change in an organization using a real world example. Participation & Attendance Prompt and consistent attendance in your online courses is essential for your success at CSU-Global Campus. Change is part of our personal and professional lives. Change can be stressful, enlightening, dramatic, or transformational, depending upon the circumstances. Think about a circumstance or experience that you have known, either in professional or personal life, that involved change and was particularly memorable. The required reading in the textbook this week describes these change experiences as stories. Reflect on your personal change experience (story) and draw upon the course materials to describe the circumstances and lessons objectively by answering the following questions: What was the change story and what made this change experience memorable? Of the change lessons outlined in the Managing Organizational Change textbook, which of these lessons were present in your story? Which ones were absent? Of the change lessons that you experienced, were any of them useful for facing future changes in which you were or might be involved? If so, when did you realize that the lessons were transferable? If that did not occur for you, why were the lessons not transferable for you? Review the grading rubric, which can be accessed in the Module 1 Materials folder, to thoroughly Develop a 2-3 page essay (title and reference pages do not count in the 2-3 page requirement). Support your major points with citations from course materials and outside sources. Describe your personal experiences, but support any analysis or interpretation with substantiation from credible sources. Option #2: An Organization s Story and Change Lessons Change can be stressful, enlightening, dramatic or transformational, depending upon the circumstances. Locate a story about change in your professional field. Answer the following questions about the change: Describe your professional field in an introduction paragraph. What was the change story? Of the change lessons outlined in the Managing Organizational Change textbook, which of these lessons were present? Which ones were absent? Module 2 Module 3 CRITICAL THINKING ASSIGNMENT (60 points) Option #1: The Turnaround Story at Leonard Cheshire (Exercise 2.2) Read the The Turnaround Story at Leonard Cheshire Case Study in the Managing Organizational Change textbook. Thoroughly respond to the three questions listed at the beginning of the case in a 3 page essay. Review the grading rubric, which can be accessed in the Module 2 Materials folder, to thoroughly Develop a 3 page essay (title and reference pages do not count in the 3-page requirement). Option #2: Self-Assessment Take the self-assessment from Chapter 2 of the textbook. Then write a 3-page narrative essay that reports your scores, defines your dominant images, and responds to the four questions at the end of the self-assessment. While this is a reflective assignment, you must support your responses with citations as directed in the checklist below. Review the grading rubric, which can be accessed in the Module 2 Materials folder, to thoroughly Develop a 3-page essay (title and reference pages do not count in the 3-page requirement). Support your major points with citations from course materials and outside sources. Describe your personal experiences, but support any analysis or interpretation with substantiation from credible sources. CRITICAL THINKING ASSIGNMENT (60 points) Option #1: The Capital One Financial Story (Exercise 4.1)

Module 4 Read the The Capital One Financial Story case study in the Managing Organizational Change textbook. Write a 3- page essay that thoroughly answers the four questions listed at the beginning of the case. Review the grading rubric, which can be accessed in the Module 3 Materials folder, to thoroughly Develop a 3-page essay (title and reference pages do not count in the 3-page requirement). Option #2: Types of Change Module 3 introduced the following types of change: First-order, Second-order, Transformational, Downsizing, Technological, and Merger and Acquisitions. Select one of these types of change and locate a scholarly research article about it from the CSU-Global Library. Prepare a 6-slide PowerPoint presentation that includes: Slide 1: Title slide that includes the title of article, your name, MGT351, CSU-Global, and the date. Slide 2: Title of the article, the type of change being addressed, and the purpose or problem that the study addressed. Slide 3: How the study was conducted, number of organizations or people involved in the study, how data was collected and analyzed, etc. Slide 4: The findings and implications of the study. Slide 5: Your reflections regarding what you learned. Slide 6: A full APA citation for the article with URL. Use bulleted points rather than entire sentences. Use font no smaller than 20pt. CRITICAL THINKING ASSIGNMENT (60 points) Option #1: Diagnostic Model Analysis Diagnostic models are used by managers and leaders to understand the magnitude of change and the processes and systems that may be impacted by change. By diagnosing an organization, strategies specific to the diagnosis may be selected. Think about the patient that comes in with a sore throat. The doctor runs a battery of tests that indicate that a streptococcus infection exists. The diagnosis has been made and a strong antibiotic is prescribed.

Similarly, managers may use a diagnostic model to determine the "battery of tests," make a diagnosis, and decide on which strategies are relevant to the organization. Select a diagnostic model identified in the Module 4 lecture or a model of your choice. Write a 3-4 page essay that identifies the model and describes the components of the model and their relationship to each other. Assess whether the diagnostic model that you chose is appropriate for all or any of the types of changes that were discussed in Module 3. PORTFOLIO PROJECT MILESTONE (25 points) Options #1 and #2: Portfolio Project Paper Outline

Module 5 Module 6 Regardless of which Portfolio Project you have chosen to complete, this week you must complete and submit a one-page outline. Preparing an outline for your Portfolio Project will help you organize your thoughts and research. For more information on how to create a quality outline, review the tips at OWL in addition to the sample outline. CRITICAL THINKING ASSIGNMENT (60 points) Option #1: Moneyball Case Study (Exercise 8.3) Read the Moneyball case study in the Managing Organizational Change textbook. Write a 3-4 page essay that thoroughly answers the five questions listed at the end of the case. Review the grading rubric, which can be accessed in the Module 5 Materials folder, to thoroughly Develop a 3-4 page essay (title and reference pages do not count in the 3-4 page requirement). Option #2: Change at DuPont (Exercise 9.5) Read the Change at DuPont case study in the Managing Organizational Change textbook. Write a 3-4 page essay that thoroughly answers the first three questions listed at the end of the case. Then conclude your essay by summarizing how your change steps may be received by DuPont staff affected by the change and how you took potential resistance to change into consideration when outlining your steps to manage the change. CRITICAL THINKING ASSIGNMENT (70 points)

Option #1: Managing a Large Scale Change Imagine you are the owner of a small company about to expand in a big way. You need to change your vision statement to express this change. Develop a 3-4 page essay that explains the change, why you need to make it, and what your plans are for making it. Create a vision statement and decide how you will share it. Use the information from this module and other articles to support how you plan on making the change. Option #2: Develop Your Own Change Model (Exercise 10.1) In Chapter 10 of Managing Organizational Change, we have explored five change checklists, four stage models of implementation, the processual approach to change, and four contingency frameworks. These approaches are similar in some respects and different in others. Can they be combined? Complete the following steps and write a 3-4 page essay to share your results (incorporating your responses to each question). 1. Bring the advice from these different models into a single list, omitting the overlaps. 2. Reflecting on your own experience and knowledge of organizational change, consider what issues and steps are missing from these guidelines; add these to your master list. (Consider the role of an organization s vision in managing change.) Now create your own composite change management model. Incorporate both a textual description and a visual representation of your model into your paper. 3. Can you prioritize this advice? What items are more important and which are less important? Taking a contingency approach, in which organizational contexts do particular items become more or less significant? 4. Can you identify a preferred sequence of change implementation steps? And can you explain and justify this recommendation? 5. Looking at your composite change management model, identify three management skills associated with each of the elements. Use this as the basis of a personal assessment; what are your strongest and your weakest change management skills? 6. Looking at the elements in your composite change management model, and reflecting on your own experience of organizational change, which elements are usually handled well and which are often handled badly? Why do you think this is this the case? Module 8 Incorporate both a textual description and a visual representation of your change management model into your paper. PORTFOLIO PROJECT MILESTONE (25 points) Options #1 and #2: Portfolio Project Reference List Regardless of which Portfolio Project you have chosen to complete, this week you must complete and submit a reference list for your Portfolio Project paper. Your reference list must include a minimum of five scholarly sources that will be cited in your final paper and must be in APA format. Carefully review the formatting requirements for the reference list in the CSU-Global Guidelines for Writing and APA. Additional reference list examples are available at the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL).
