It s important to get your students up and moving from time to time. Not just to wake them up, or to break up the routine, but because physical activity will help them learn better. Each of the following activities are designed to get students out of their seats as they practice their grammar skills. By activating all learning styles-visual, auditory and kinesthetic there is a much better chance they will remember the concept you are trying to reinforce. You may have to move some desks around, and you may have more noise than usual, but in the end, you may have to correct fewer grammar errors. Wouldn t that be awesome? These games can be done at anytime at the beginning of class to get their blood flowing and brains working; in the middle to wake them up; or, at the end as a fun wrap-up activity. While learning itself is the best reward, you can crank up the competitive nature of these games by providing an external reward. Candy always works, or you could create a running tally of points for individuals or groups. After a certain period of time, the winner could get a treat, a night off homework, the chance to leave class early, or just the title of champ whatever works best for you.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement: A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun. An antecedent is the word that the pronoun replaces. Pronouns & antecedents must agree in both number and person. Singular he, she, it him, her, it his, her, hers, its himself, herself, itself I me Plural they them their, theirs themselves we, our us Number: A singular antecedent requires a singular pronoun, and a plural antecedent needs a plural one. Incorrect: One needs to practice their writing skills if they want to improve. Correct: The teacher was pleased when she saw that her students had done their homework. Person: If you begin writing in the first person (I), don t switch to the second person (you) or third person (he, she, they, it, etc.). Similarly, if you are using the second person, don't switch to first or third. Incorrect: When students write essays,. you need to edit carefully When we write essays, you need to edit carefully Correct :When students write essays, they need to edit carefully.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement: Singular Indefinite Pronouns each, either, neither anybody, anyone, anything everybody, everyone, everything nobody, no one, nothing somebody, someone, something A singular indefinite pronoun is always singular, and often causes confusion. Many students will write: Each of the students need to pass in their essays today. However, this one is correct: Each of the students needs to pass in his/her essay today. Everybody should get his homework done on time. Somebody left her purse in the locker room. *If you dislike the awkwardness of his/her, just make the noun plural: All students need to pass in their essays.

Pronoun-antecedent agreement: Collective Nouns audience, board, cabinet, class committee, company, corporation, council department, faculty, family, firm, group jury, majority, minority, navy public, school, senate, team, troupe Collective nouns are names of groups/things that are comprised of people. Depending on the context, collective nouns can be singular or plural. If the group is acting as a unit, the collective noun is singular. Ex: The class took its first test on grammar. If the members are acting individually, treat the noun as a plural one: After the bell, the class goes their separate ways.

Game One: Cut up the cards that contain the pronouns, as well as the one with the incorrect sentences. You will need one sheet of paper for every student, giving half of them a word, and half of them a sentence. Pass the sheets out face down so no one can see what the other has. Once everyone has a sheet, tell the students to find a match. Once they have, they must show it to you; if they are correct, they sit down. Time the exercise so they have to move quickly.. If you have an even number, like 20 --10 students get word cards; 10 get sentence cards. If you have an odd number like 25 13 students get word cards and 12 get sentences When you have one more sentence than words, it s like musical chairs there will be one student who doesn t get a match. This will make the game even more interesting!. *Be sure to take the time to match the words with the sentences before you hand them to the students, to ensure you have a match for everyone. And, just in case, leave a stack of pronouns on a table where they can switch them out if they need to. However, they can only do this once they have exhausted their search among their classmates. Also, occasionally, they may need to change the verb (to singular or plural) to make the sentence work. They can tell you this when they show you their matches. Bonus: once they find the correct pronoun, for the sentence they should re-write the sentence in another way. For ex: When a teen gets his licence, he could be re-written as When teens get their licences, they

Game Two Needed: Flip chart paper and markers One pronoun per student. You will need to ensure that you have matches, so if you have twenty students, you will need ten matches. For example, if a student had Each, another student will need his, her or his or her. It always helps to have a stack of extras on a table that students can look through if their matches don t work. Procedure: Students will need to find another student who has a pronoun that will allow them to write a grammatically correct sentence. Once they find their match, they will write a sentence on a piece of flip chart paper that you have put on the wall or on a table. The first team there will write its sentence on the paper, and other teams will have to wait their turn. Depending on the size of your class, you may want to use multiple sheets. You could assign points to each team, based on how quickly they were able to complete the task the first team gets ten points, the second team gets nine, etc. You can keep track of the points each time you play and offer a reward to the top finishing teams.

Game Three For the next game, you will need to put your students in groups of four or five. Each group will need: Two pieces of chart paper. A set of correct and a set of incorrect sentences. Masking tape or sticky tack. 1. Write correct on one piece of chart paper, and incorrect on the other. Tape each one on a wall near every group. 2. Cut up the sentences for each group and mix them up, so correct and incorrect sentences are randomly dispersed (you will need a copy of every sentence for each group). 3. Give each group a ball of sticky tack or enough masking tape to adhere each sentence to the chart paper. 4. Tell them they can t touch the sentences until you say go if you re really organized, you could put them in an envelop for them. 5. Once you say go, the students will work together to make piles of correct and incorrect sentences. Once they have done so, they will tape each sentence to the appropriate chart paper. 6. The first group to finish and be correct wins! If you are keeping track of points over a period of time, award the first place team with ten points, the second place team with nine, etc.

CORRECT Everyone knows that he must bring his cleats to practice. Each student understands s/he needs to pass the essay in tomorrow. Everyone in the class passed in his/her assignment.
