Brookfield, Jossey-Bass 1995 In this book, Brookfield thoughtfully guides teachers through the processes of becoming critically reflective about teaching and using critical reflection as a tool for ongoing personal and professional development. Unearthing Seeds of Fire: The Idea of Highlander by Frank Adams with Myles Horton, John F. Blair Publishers, 1975 (available from Highlander hrec@highlandercenter.org) Since 1932, Highlander has played a pivotal role in southern peoples' struggles for justice and democracy. Adams brings to life the stories of dozens of men and women who discovered their strength and courage at Highlander - the strength to rise up and the courage to prevail. Errors and Expectations: A Guide for the Teacher of Basic Writing. By Mina Shaughnessy, Oxford University Press, 1977. Although this book was written a long time ago, it remains a classic. Shaughnessy wrote the book she would have liked to have had when she started out teaching beginning writing. GED Mathematics Test Curriculum GED Language Arts Writing Test Curriculum GED Social Studies, Science & Language Arts- Reading Curriculum Available free from the NH Bureau of Adult Education or on-line at www.nhadulted.org Besides a curriculum, these booklets also contain teaching recommendations, informal assessments, materials and websites. Lessons from a Child By Lucy McCormick Calkins, Heineman, 1983. Calkin s careful research and observations about the growth of writing following the progress of third-grade grader named Susie give the reader great insight into the development of the writing process in students of any age. 1

Mastering the Teaching of Adults By Jerold W. Apps, Krieger Publishing Company, 1991. This book is full of tips, techniques ideas that will encourage and inspire teachers of adults. It includes an extensive annotated bibliography of materials related to teaching adults. Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition: The Power of Comprehension Strategy Instruction By Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmermann, Heinemann, 2007. This book has become a classic. The first edition was one of the first texts that helped struggling teaching understand how to teach comprehension. The later editions include even more specific techniques written in a way that is a pleasure to read. Overcoming Dyslexia: A new and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level by Sally Shaywitz, M.D., Vintage Books This book contains clear, practical, science-based information and advice on how to help learning disabled learners. Reading Without Nonsense, 2 nd ed By Frank Smith, Teachers College, Columbia Univeristy,1985. (newer editions are available) As a supporter of a whole language approach to reading and the intimate connection between reading and writing, this newspaper reporter turned academic shares his unique perspective on reading instruction in this very readable book. Six Weeks to a Brain-Compatible Classroom Janet N. Zadina, PH.D, www.brainresearch.us/zadina-publications.html This book is quick and easy to read despite its title. The author offers simple strategies, based on what research shows, to help teachers enhance and energize instruction. This book even includes over 30 worksheets. Strategies that Work By Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis, Stenhouse Publishers, 2000. (newer editions are available) This is an excellent resource book full of practical techniques to explicitly teach reading comprehension strategies. Teaching and Assessing Phonics: Why, What, When and How: A Guide for Teachers By Jeanne S. Chall and Helen Popp, Educators Publishing service, 1996. The two Grande Dames of phonics instruction offer this book as A book for teachers, to help them to gain a perspective on phonics. Its addressed to teachers who want a better understanding of phonics from its earliest levels phonemic awareness-to more advanced levels vowel combinations and syllabication. 2

Teaching with Fire: Poetry That Sustains the Courage to Teach Sam M. Intrator, Jossey-Bass This book is a collection of 88 poems, selected, introduced and reflected upon by teachers. Readers will come away with an appreciation of the power poetry can provide to those who teach and learn. The New Teacher of Adults A Handbook for Teachers of Adult Learners 2 nd edition by Michael Brady and Allen Lampert,www.newteacherconcepts.net An excellent handbook written for Adult Education teachers and full of practical, usable, tested information and strategies. This book is a must read for all adult educators! The Reading/Writing Connection: Strategies for Teaching and Learning in the Secondary Classroom By Carol Booth Olson, Pearson, 2007. This book helps teachers strengthen their understanding and the techniques they use that can help students make the important connection between what they read and how they write. OXFORD: ESL REFERENCE BOOKS Explaining English Grammar Yule This reference book will help to refresh your grammar and includes tips and examples to help explain it to your students. Practical English Usage third edition, Michael Swan This is a great reference book for you to check your grammar and be better prepared to explain it to your students. Brown Practical English Language Teaching Reading Neil Anderson Practical English Language Teaching Speaking Kathleen Bailey These are a series of books designed for adult ESL teachers. Background information on the topic as well as strategies and techniques are found in each book. 4

Career Counseling Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career Through the Secrets of Personality Type by Paul Tieger and Barbara Barron-Tieger. This book provides a thorough explanation of the Myers-Briggs Personality Types, including an in-depth description of each element of type, explanations of the effects of developmental processes on each of the four elements of Myers-Briggs type, and explication of both the strengths and weaknesses of each type. It s a valuable tool for career planning. Material in this book can easily be adapted to develop classroom activities that help students gain a better understanding of themselves and the interpersonal dynamics of the workplace and other domains. The Career Discovery Project by Gerald Sturman. This book contains a variety of classroom- ready career planning tools inspired by the Myers-Briggs and Holland Types. In addition, there are activities to help students identify career interests, current skills, internal and external barriers to goals, as well as motivational factors that may affect career choices, satisfaction, and success. Targeting the Job You Want by Kate Wendelton. This is an excellent resource for educating students about career planning in an everchanging job-market. It offers a range activities to aid and inform the career planning and job search processes. This book can inspire the insight necessary to help jobseekers develop job security through long-range planning, adaptability, and selfdevelopment. 5
