Purpse. The faculty f the Cllege f Business adpt the fllwing plicy guidelines t maintain a faculty cmplement within the Cllege f Business that prvides students access t qualified faculty acrss all prgrams, disciplines, lcatins, and delivery mdes. These guidelines are cnsistent with the current (2013) standards frm the Assciatin t Advance Cllegiate Schls f Business (AACSB) Internatinal regarding faculty qualificatins. 2. Applicability. This plicy is applicable t all faculty assigned instructinal respnsibilities within the Cllege f Business, as well as the Dean, Assciate Deans and Institute r Center Directrs. 3. Definitin f Faculty Categries. The Cllege f Business adpts the AACSB definitin f categries f business faculty in rder t facilitate the management f faculty resurces. AACSB specifies fur categries f faculty qualificatin: (1) Schlarly Academics, (2) Practice Academics, (3) Schlarly Practitiners, and (4) Instructinal Practitiners. Faculty assigned teaching respnsibilities within the Cllege f Business shuld be in ne f these fur categries [see reference 1, Sectin 2, Standard 15]. A faculty member wh cannt be cnsidered as belnging t any ne f the abve fur categries, is cnsidered t be Other. Qualificatins are determined based n initial academic r prfessinal preparatin and sustained engagement activities. a. Schlarly Academic (SA). i. Initial Academic Preparatin Faculty members are cnsidered having met the criteria fr initial academic preparatin if they meet ne f the fllwing 1. Research based Dctral degree (r ABD) is in the discipline in which the individual teaches. 2. Dctral degree is utside f the primary teaching discipline but individual has sufficient academic and/r prfessinal preparatin fr instructinal respnsibilities. 3. Individuals with a graduate degree in law will be cnsidered t have the apprpriate initial academic preparatin fr teaching in the area f business law. 4. A graduate degree in taxatin r a cmbinatin f a graduate degrees in law and accunting will be cnsidered the apprpriate initial preparatin fr teaching in the area f taxatin. ii. Sustained Engagement Activities 1. Faculty members that are ABD will be cnsidered SA fr three calendar years frm the time they defended their dissertatin prpsal. Dcumentatin f initial dissertatin defense must be prvided. 2. Faculty members that have cmpleted their initial academic preparatin will be cnsidered SA fr five calendar years frm the time they cmpleted their terminal degree. 3. If mre than five years ut frm their terminal degree cmpletin, faculty members will be cnsidered SA if they have a ttal f a. SA requirements fr 1/1/2017 thrugh 12/31/2019 i. Five intellectual r schlarly cntributins during a five-year perid. The review perid is determined using a calendar year. See list f intellectual and schlarly activities attached as appendix A. ii. Three must be intellectual cntributins f which ne must be an article in a preferred peer reviewed jurnal (PRJ), see appendix B fr minimum requirements t be cnsidered a preferred jurnal r utlet iii. At least tw cntributins must be within the mst recent tw-year perid. b. SA requirements t begin 1/1/2020 i. Five intellectual r schlarly cntributins during a five-year perid. The review perid is determined using a calendar year. See list f intellectual and schlarly activities attached as appendix A. ii. Three must be intellectual cntributins f which tw are articles in a preferred PRJ, see appendix B fr minimum requirements t be cnsidered a preferred jurnal r utlet. 1. At least ne PRJ shuld be a duble-blind peer reviewed listed in Cabell s with an acceptance rate f 60% r lwer (r) 2. n the Australian Business Deans Cuncil list (ABDC) iii. At least tw cntributins must be within the mst recent tw-year perid. b. Practice Academic (PA). i. Initial Academic Preparatin 1. ii. Sustained Engagement Activities 1. Faculty members r administratrs (deans, chairs and directrs) that are currently SA will develp a PA Plan with their department chair that is reviewed and apprved by the Dean. A Dean seeking classificatin as PA will have their plan prepared in cnsultatin with the department chairs and assciate deans and apprved by the Deputy Prvst. 2. The plan will include, intellectual, schlarly and prfessinal engagement activities and criteria t be applied t a five-year review perid. In that fiveyear review perid, faculty and administratrs will be cnsidered PA if they meet the criteria develped within the plan. 3. Typically, a five-year plan will include the fllwing elements: a. Five intellectual, schlarly r prfessinal engagement cntributins during a five-year perid. The review perid is determined using a calendar year. See list f intellectual, schlarly and prfessinal engagement cntributins attached as Appendix A. Nrmally, at least ne cntributin must be an article in a preferred PRJ, see appendix B fr minimum requirements t be cnsidered a preferred jurnal r utlet. The PRJ cntributin may be in a trade r practitiner jurnal. b. The PA Plan will list cntributin expectatins that are substantial in nature and that include expected utcmes that dcument prf t shw that the intellectual, schlarly r prfessinal activities undertaken invlved the applicatin f knwledge and thery in a prfessinal setting and will be material in time and substance and are directly related and relevant t the enhancement in the faculty member s primary teaching area r if an administratr r chair their primary area f respnsibility. It is the faculty r administrative member s respnsibility t prvide the required dcumentatin fr all required activities. c. Examples f intellectual, schlarly and prfessinal engagement cntributins t retain PA status include, but are nt limited t the list prvided in Appendix A. c. Schlarly Practitiner (SP). i. Initial Academic and Prfessinal Preparatin 1. Cmpletin f at least a Master s degree in the field in which a faculty member is assigned t teach and prfessinal experience that is current at the time f hire and that has been substantial in terms f duratin and level f respnsibility and clearly links t the field in which the faculty member is expected t teach. 2. Nrmally t be cnsidered substantial in duratin and f a significant level f respnsibility, the prfessinal wrk experience shall have ccurred ver a perid n less than ten cnsecutive years and has resulted in Plicy n Faculty Qualificatins Draft 2/15/2017 Page 3

accmplishing increased levels f respnsibility such that at a minimum the experience has included supervisry experiences. Wrk experience is current at the time f hire. Exceptins must be apprved by the Dean based n specific qualificatins f the individual, time f hire, and/r departmental need. 3. If the Master s degree is utside the field in which the faculty member is assigned t teach, there is an increased expectatin fr substantial prfessinal wrk experience in the discipline. ii. Sustained Engagement Activities 1. Cllege expectatins regarding schlarship, maintaining effrts t cntinue prfessinal develpment fr their specialty and hw it is applied in practice are similar t the expectatins fr faculty t maintain SA [see abve 3.a.ii, 3a and 3b.] a. SP faculty may als cnsider publicatins in trade and practitiner-riented jurnals. b. Trade and practitiner-riented utlets shuld fllw the prcess fr seeking apprval frm the department as a preferred jurnal prir t submissin. d. Instructinal Practitiner (IP). i. Initial Academic and Prfessinal Preparatin 1. Same as the Initial Academic and Prfessinal Preparatin fr SP, see abve 3.C.i. ii. Sustained Engagement Activities 1. Faculty members that cntinue wrking full-time in the same r similar prfessinal wrk that qualified them as IP will cntinue t qualify as IP. 2. Faculty members that are wrking part-time in the same r similar prfessinal wrk that qualified them as IP will cntinue t qualify as IP. 3. Faculty members that are wrking exclusively in an academic psitin must develp an IP Maintenance Plan. a. An IP Maintenance Plan typically includes five intellectual, schlarly r prfessinal engagement cntributins t validate practitiner status. These activities will be identified in cnsultatin with their department chair and apprved by the dean. The time perid fr the plan will align with the faculty member s cntract. b. The IP Maintenance Plan will list intellectual, schlarly and prfessinal cntributins that are substantial in nature and that include expected utcmes that dcument prf t shw that the cntributin activities undertaken invlved the applicatin f knwledge and thery in a prfessinal setting and will be material in time and substance and are directly related and relevant t the Plicy n Faculty Qualificatins Draft 2/15/2017 Page 4

enhancement in the faculty r administrative member s primary teaching r administrative respnsibilities. It is the faculty r administrative member s respnsibility t prvide the required dcumentatin fr all required activities. c. Cnsulting activities require dcumentatin that demnstrates the significance f the scpe and duratin f engagement. d. Examples f intellectual, schlarly and prfessinal engagement cntributins t retain IP status are listed in Appendix A. Dcumentatin shuld be prvided fr all such activities. e. Other (O). i. Faculty members are categrized as Other if they d nt meet the requirements fr any f the specified qualificatins abve. ii. Faculty members that are classified as Other must wrk with their department chair t develp a plan that will lead t becming qualified in the apprpriate classificatin fr their academic preparatin and prfessinal wrk experience as well as their teaching assignment and faculty categry. iii. The plan shuld include mutually agreed timelines t enable the faculty member becme qualified as SA, PA, SP, r IP. iv. Department chairs must seek apprval frm the dean t cntinue scheduling a faculty member that is classified as Other and is nt n a plan t becme qualified as SA, PA, SP r IP. 4. Academic Disciplines: Faculty must be qualified within their primary field f teaching. Faculty members with a degree ut f discipline will be expected t engage in sustaining activities that are directly related t the cntent in their primary teaching area. 5. Cntributin classificatins: As specified by AACSB: Faculty maintain the knwledge and expertise required t supprt the Schl s missin as evidenced thrugh cntributins (ver the past five years) in the areas f: (1) basic r discvery schlarship; (2) applied r integrative/applicatin schlarship; and (3) teaching and learning schlarship. (See Reference 1, Sectin 2, Standard 15, p. 42.) 6. Faculty Hlding Administrative Rank a. Faculty members that hld administrative appintments at the level f directr, department chair, assciate dean, r dean will maintain their faculty qualificatins as apprpriate fr their academic preparatin, typically SA r PA. They will maintain their qualificatin thrugh intellectual and schlarly cntributins as specified under sustaining engagement activities fr the apprpriate classificatin. b. Administratrs that maintain their PA qualificatin during their tenure as an administratr will retain that classificatin after stepping dwn fr a perid equivalent t the length f their administrative service but nt t exceed five years. It is expected that during this five-year perid schlarly activities are undertaken with ne peer review publicatin in the first three years (r) ne peer review publicatin submitted fr review, that will allw the individual t be Plicy n Faculty Qualificatins Draft 2/15/2017 Page 5

classified as SA, r the apprpriate classificatin based n academic preparatin, within the fiveyear perid. 7. Review Prcess. The review prcess t determine faculty qualificatins will be cnducted annually, n a calendar year basis. a. By January 31 st (r the next business day) f each year, all faculty assigned instructinal respnsibilities will ensure that their relevant activities and evidence fr the previus five years is entered int the reprting system (currently Digital Measures) used by the Cllege f Business (CBUS) and MSU Denver. The faculty member will generate a CBUS AACSB Prfile Reprt, and using the Qualificatins Review Template, evaluate their wn status (as SA, PA, SP, IP, r ther) based n the evidence they have prvided in Digital Measures and as is reprted n the AACSB Prfile Reprt. This infrmatin will be sent t their department chair. b. By February 28 th (r the next business day) the Chair will evaluate faculty qualificatins based n the evidence prvided by the faculty member. The Department Chair will meet with faculty if there is disagreement between the faculty member s self-evaluatin and the Chair s evaluatin f qualificatins r if it appears that the faculty member is classified as ther r is in jepardy f becming classified as ther. c. Faculty members may appeal their evaluatin. Appeals must be submitted in writing and will be affrded all rights f due prcess. Appeals must be submitted within ne mnth after the faculty member is ntified f their evaluatin. Late appeals will nt be reviewed unless a faculty member submits evidence that matters beynd their cntrl prevented submissin within the specified time perid. Submitted appeals will be reviewed by the Dean, Cllege f Business. 8. A quality jurnal is nrmally defined as ne that bserves integrity f the duble-blind, peer review prcess. This nrmally includes prviding the peer reviewers cmments. Every effrt shuld be taken t assure that the jurnal is nt predatry in nature. Preferred jurnals are jurnals listed In Cabell s as peer reviewed r n the current Australian Business Deans Cuncil (ABDC) list.
