GIMPA BUSINESS SCHOOL: THE OFFER WHAT MAKES A GREAT BUSINESS SCHOOL A few years ago, David Sims wrote in the UK Guardian Newspaper that the best business schools prepare people to work in the present and the future, not the past. If business schools are doing their job, their alumni will change the future, not simply cope with it. GIMPA agrees with this observation, that our alumni should be change makers not just followers..that is part of the reason why GIMPA was ranked the best business School in Africa by the Financial Times we have since improved on this honour. How? PROGRAMME VARIETY Entrepreneurship Project Management Logistics Supply Chain Management Accounting but then most of all Marketing Operations Finance Management Human Resource Management OUR FACULTY The quality of any educational institution rests in significant part on its faculty and staff. GIMPA boasts of the best set of faculty members in Ghana, ahead of any business school in the country. With more than 30 Lecturers who have earned their PhDs from universities around the globe, GIMPA Business School is the clear leader in the field of business in Ghana. Dedicated and committed to their vocations, our faculty is willing and able to provide the requisite support that you will need as a student. In short, our faculty cares. CURRICULUM The BSc, MBA, MRes and others are not just degrees at GIMPA. They are plans to develop leaders who are well-versed in the intricacies of contemporary global management. The continual exchange of ideas among students and lecturers from diverse backgrounds and countries adds to the wealth of experience gained at GIMPA. The attention given to students to help them grow into true leaders is demonstrated in the small teacher-student ratio. Experience the difference in quality at our campuses in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tema. STUDY ABROAD GIMPA has instituted exchange program agreements with universities in Europe and the Americas. Students may apply to study for a semester or more at these universities. Students in the Honours program are required to complete at least two semesters abroad. The experience will expose students to the business attitudes and practices of another country. Students will also build a global network of friends and through these exchange programmes, not to mention the wealth and breadth of ideas through diversity. SCHOLARSHIPS A few merit-based/need-based scholarships are available for qualified students, particularly undergraduates. 4 GIMPA BUSINESS SCHOOL

WHY GHANA? WHY ACCRA? Popularly known as the Gateway to Africa, Ghana has one of Africa s fast growing economies. Experience the proverbial Ghanaian hospitality, diverse culture and rich history. The programme content provides students with a comprehensive overview of business and also provides knowledge about the manner in which businesses operate and how they are formed and structured. The functions and activities of the different business departments are also covered. The aim of the Diploma in Management Studies is to develop an appreciation of the management functions within organizations. Students are introduced to some of the key concerns of administrative managers within a rapidly changing environment, including appreciation of the need to manage information. UNDERGRADUATE HONOURS PROGRAMME GIMPA has developed a reputation for excellence over its history. This academic excellence is reinforced everyday through various learning and related activities on its campuses in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tema. For exceptional students, the pursuit of excellence may be further experienced in the GIMPA Business School Honours Programme. The programme is for full-time bachelor students looking for a challenge over and above what the regular curriculum offers. Such students have exceptional academic and other capabilities to pursue their academic interests in greater depth and breadth than is required for the regular bachelor s degree. The programme attracts the best and brightest students in the country. These highly motivated students are encouraged to be the best they can be through special programmes of study, study abroad and career counselling, among others. The programme is marked by a distinct core of rigorous interdisciplinary courses and studies on exchange at high ranking universities around the world. Students admitted into the honours programme will be recognized for their pursuit of excellence through tuition waivers. That is, students admitted into the programme will not pay tuition fees, as long as their CGPA does not fall below 3.60. Participation in the programme will be recorded on transcripts and indicated on your certificates. ELIGIBILITY Based on their academic performance, students in their second year at GIMPA will be invited to apply for admission into the Honours Programme, beginning in the third year of studies. Each year, no more than 25 students shall be admitted into the programme. Thus, at its peak, there shall be no more than 50 students in the programme. REQUIREMENTS Upon admission into the GIMPA Honours College, a student will be assigned a faculty advisor who will work closely with the student to develop a rigorous plan of study. The advisor will monitor the student s progress. In order to receive the GIMPA Honours degree, the student must fulfill the degree requirements of the Business School, maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.60. In addition to this, the student will meet three other requirements: Propose a demanding programme of study that will be approved by the Honours College Spend at least two non-consecutive semesters at our partner schools abroad Develop and execute an independent research project, culminating in the production of an undergraduate thesis 10 GIMPA BUSINESS SCHOOL

The programme of study should have breadth, depth, and focus. Students can meet the spirit of this requirement if their course work and related academic accomplishments are particularly noteworthy through their rigor. In sum, the programme of study component is an indicator that the student is willing to challenge himself or herself academically. It is expected that your first semesters in your third and fourth years will be spent abroad at one of our partner institutions. In April of each year, partner schools with spaces for our students will be announced and honours students who meet the requirements will be invited to apply. Students shall pay no tuition fees to the host university, but will bear all other costs associated with travel and stay. To complete the thesis component, the student will work closely with a faculty member to design and implement an academic research project. The student will defend the thesis before a faculty examination committee that will include an external examiner. As a mark of the intellectual challenge presented by the honours programme, students are encouraged to strive to have the same research experience -- and produce the same calibre of thesis -- as that of a master s student within the relevant academic discipline. GIMPA BUSINESS SCHOOL 11

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE/ DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION These two postgraduate programmes prepare students for business practice and entry into advanced academic programmes in business. POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (CBA) The postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration (CBA) programme provides an introduction to management principles to those without formal education in business. The focus is on exposing students to basic business functions and concepts. This enables students to understand the context within which they work in order to make them more effective. The programme also prepares them for further graduate study in business. To be admitted to the programme, a candidate must have obtained a bachelor s degree from an approved/recognized university in a non-business discipline. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (DBA) The diploma programme moves beyond the basic concepts introduced in the Certificate in Business Administration to focus on core business functions. The goal is to give students a deeper understanding of key business functions within a firm. Students are encouraged to explore these functional areas in preparation for more advanced career positions. Applicants of the Postgraduate Diploma must have obtained the Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration from GIMPA or a Bachelor s degree in business (or their equivalent as certified by GIMPA). Candidates with the final qualifications of professional bodies in business-related areas (e.g. ACCA, ICA, ICSA, CIPS, CIMA) may also apply.

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA) The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a post-baccalaureate professional degree geared towards those who have had little to moderate management experience since graduation. The programme is designed to enhance your competitiveness in a globalizing business world where your ability to leverage your skills and other resources is increasingly important. At GIMPA, you will learn to manage complexity, ambiguity and change as you examine business issues in a global environment using multiple perspectives. You will also learn to be analytical and critical in your thinking, toward enhanced decision-making. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme is run in 3 formats: Evening, Weekend and Modular. Campuses in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Takoradi may run different formats depending on student needs. The Evening programme is run over a 2-year period of 4/5 semesters. The Weekend programme is run over a two-year period of 4/5 semesters. The Modular programme is an intense learning experience based on 3-week sessions at five-month intervals. EXECUTIVE MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (EMBA) The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) is a professional degree specifically designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, attitude and skills required by chief executives and other top level managers to effectively surmount the leadership and managerial challenges they face in their organizations. As such, the programme adopts a generalist perspective that is relevant to those at senior levels of management. The programme does not provide for specialization in any functional area of business. The EMBA curriculum has been designed to meet international standards and to prepare participants for competing in the global environment. The programme is run in the modular format, an intense learning experience based on 3-week sessions at five-month intervals. INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (IEMBA) The International Executive Master of Business Administration (iemba) is one of the newest courses of study to be added to the innovative set of programmes offered by the GIMPA Business School. The course is intended for those with considerable executive management experience who seek to enhance their skills through exposure to the best international business practices. The programme is offered over 3-week sessions (modular). The focus of the programme is to provide conceptual foundations for analytical decision-making and to expose students to the best global management practices toward enhancing the student s management and leadership skills. The programme emphasizes analytical thinking and decision-making. A major highlight of the iemba is the travel abroad component whereby 14 GIMPA BUSINESS SCHOOL

students are given the opportunity to interact with international business executives in different parts of the world. Two course sessions will be spent abroad, attending classes and interacting with renowned CEOs in that country. This experience will expose you to different business contexts and cultures, while helping you develop a wider global network of contacts. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme is designed to meet the needs of today s management executive. The courses are run in the modular format, whereby students take intense 3-week in-class modules at five-month intervals, supplemented by virtual interactions between lecturers and students. This is partly to allow GIMPA s renowned foreign-based adjunct faculty to be key instructors on the programme. Our faculty comes from all over the world to share the latest developments in their areas of business expertise. Experienced and successful local practitioners are also involved in the delivery of courses. CAPSTONE PROJECT The programme requires a capstone project. Students may identify their project ideas early in the programme so that they may use their interaction with international faculty and CEOs as opportunities to seek ideas on resolving the problem at hand.
