The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) is responsible for serving MSU s international community and prepares this data annually. Below are some observations about this year s enrollments and annual highlights from the OISS. 1. Enrollment numbers: There was an overall 0.7% decrease in the number of international students from 3,315 in Fall 2004 to 3,293 in Fall 2005. The enrollment of international graduate students decreased by 2.8%. International graduate students consist of 39.6% of the total number of MSU graduate students. This drop is commensurate with the decline in funding for assistantships. The number of undergraduate international students increased by 5.1% from 990 to 1,014. International students are 3.3% of MSU s undergraduate enrollment. In Fall 2005, international students represented 7.3% of all MSU students. 2. Sending countries: Asia sends the most international students to MSU. More than 50% of MSU s international students come from five countries: Korea (751), China (527), India (353), Taiwan (174), and Japan (136). The numbers from four of our five top markets were down: Japan by 31, China by 16, India by 18, Korea by 8. Among the top five, only the numbers from Taiwan increased. In academic year 2005, there was a significant increase of 16.8% in the number of undergraduate students from Korea from 2004. There was an increase of 14.3% in the number of students from Canada from 151 in academic year 2004 to 176 in 2005. In Fall 2005, students came from 127 countries compared to 126 in Fall 2004. 3. The Colleges of Business (638), Natural Science (574), Engineering (519), and Arts and Letters (418) enroll the largest number of international students. 4. The number of visiting scholars this past year was 1221, representing 90 countries. 5. MSU s international students and scholars contributed more than $90 million to the economy of greater Lansing, according to the Institute of International Education s formula for calculating the economic impact of international students. OISS also devotes time to educational outreach and programming aimed at making international students and scholars feel welcome on campus and in the community. Below are some highlights of the past year: More than 800 new international students enrolled at MSU in Fall 2005. The fall orientation program was a great success in making them feel welcome and to quickly integrate them into the life of the campus. In September, OISS, the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing and Community Volunteers for International Programs (CVIP) hosted a second annual special reception for international students that featured remarks from President Lou Anna K. Simon. This event brought together local government officials and members of the business community who affirmed their commitment to making international students feel valued and welcome in the Lansing area. Page 34 Page 3

The International Students Association (ISA) joined many others in the campus community by marching in MSU s Sesquicentennial Parade. The OISS worked closely with the ISA this past year and are pleased to observe their hard earned success. There is now better formal representation of international students at all levels of student government. The third annual International Student Essay Contest enabled international students to write about their experiences on our campus and in our community. This provided the students a chance to reflect on their lives at MSU and in the US. It also gave the rest of the campus a chance to learn from the experiences of some of the most global members of our community. You can read the winning entries at www.isp.msu.edu/ oiss. Community Volunteers for International Programs (CVIP) and the MSU Union collaborated to present the 19 th annual Global Festival during International Education Week in November. Students from many countries shared their culture with more than 4,000 members of the community during Global Fest this year. Other CVIP programs such as the Speaker s Bureau, the Lending Center, the Friendship Family program, the Supper Club, and the Scholarship program operated over the past year. The weekly International Coffee Hour continues to be a popular tradition for gathering, conversation, and the opportunity to make friends from around the world. An average of 100 students and scholars attend the Friday afternoon event. This year several MSU departments and units have sponsored coffee hour. This sponsorship provides them with the opportunity to showcase their programs and to reach out to the international community on campus. International Scholar Population By Country During the 2004-05 year, the OISS Emergency Tuition program allocated approximately $143,000 to more than 100 international students who demonstrated financial need. The Sponsored Student Program assisted 176 students who are in the U.S. with special support from government agencies or sponsoring organizations. These sponsors include the Institute of International Education (IIE), the Latin American Program for American Universities (LASPAU), the America-Mideast Educational and Training Services (AMIDEAST), the governments of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. OISS conducted a variety of programs on topics of special interest to international students. These topics included information on employment regulations, tips for academic success, travel advisories, and immigration issues. All these activities, we believe, have helped to make MSU a welcoming and comfortable place for international students to pursue their academic goals. It is a privilege for our staff to serve the international community. In the pages that follow, you will find a wealth of statistical information on the international student and scholar population at MSU. This publication was compiled and organized by Ravi Ammigan, International Advisor in OISS. Special thanks go to Lucille Wright and Nancy Rademacher for their assistance in preparing this data. 2004-2005 (July 01 - June 30) Peter Briggs Director Page 4
