Wistow Ways Orton Wistow Primary School Date: 11/09/17 Issue: 212 Message from the Deputy Headteacher Dear Parents and Carers, We had a fantastic first week back and the children should feel very proud of how they settled into their new classes. We kick started this new school year and the new term s topics with some fantastic events including the Year Two Great Fire of London day and the Year Three Stone Age day. I know that many of the classes tweeted about these events and other exciting things happening in class over the week. Please try and follow your child s class twitter feed, it is a great way to see what they have been up to throughout the week. The clubs letter went home last week and we have already seen a great response, with lots of children signing up for one of the things on offer. These clubs are a great chance for the children to try something new or continue to develop an existing interest or skill. Please send in replies by Wednesday 13 th September and we will let the children know by the end of the week if they have a place. It was great seeing some of our new Foundation Stage children arriving at school this morning. I m sure they will have a great time this week in the Hedgehogs and Penguins classes. Best wishes, Colin Marks Deputy Headteacher In this issue Deputy Headteacher s Message... 1 Contents... 1 This Week s Assembly Theme... 1 Clubs... 2 Coming Up!... 2 Curriculum Evening... 2 This Weeks Menu... 2 Year 7 School Applications... 3 Individual School Photos... 3 Jeans For Genes... 3 New Reception Tours... 4 Purple sweatshirts... 4 Nut Free School... 5 This week s Assembly Theme: This morning the assembly theme was Jeans For Genes. 1

Wombats Lunch Week WISTOW WAYS ISSUE: 212 Clubs by Mr Marks Most children who apply for a space in a club will be successful, but some clubs are very popular and we have to draw names out of a hat. Your child will be told at the end of this week if they have a space. Please remind your children when their club is. If they are allocated a space we expect them to turn up on time each week and make the most of these opportunities. All the staff running a club are giving up their own time to do so and if a child cannot attend for some reason the adult should be informed beforehand. Coming Up This Week: WB 11 th September Wombats Lunch Week FS children Start Tuesday Rock Steady Selected pupils Wednesday Year 1 Toy Experience Day Individual School Photographs Next Week: WB 18th September Clubs Start Wednesday Curriculum Evening Years 1-6 Year 6 Family Learning FOWS AGM Friday Jeans for Genes Day In 2 Weeks: WB 25 th September Hummingbirds Lunch Week FS Full-Time Tuesday Year 6 Cadbury World Visit Friday Honours Award Assembly 1 In Three Weeks: WB 2 nd October Wallabies Lunch week Census day Curriculum Evening by Mr Marks The form for this event is also being sent home today via parentmail. Please respond at your earliest convenience to let us know if you can attend or not. The evening is for all parents and carers of children in Years One to Six and we will be letting you know about the changes we have made to homework, how you can help your children at home and we will be showing you the new school website. We look forward to seeing you then. This Week s Menu- WEEK B by Mrs Cooper 2

Year 7 Applications It's that time of the year again when Year 6 pupils will be applying for Year 7 secondary school places for September 2018. To ensure that all parents are aware of the process for applying for Year 7 secondary school places, I have forwarded a letter to all the parents of Year 6 children. I have also sent you a copy of the open evening dates for all the secondary schools. The dates of the open evening are set out in the 2018/19 Secondary Admissions booklet which will be available on the council website from 12 September. Hard copies of the booklet will be also available from 12 September directly from the Local Authority. Parents can apply on-line from 12 September 2017. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2017. Individual School Photographs by Mrs Russell Ward-Hendry, our school photographer will be in school on 14th September 2017 to take individual photographs of your children. The proofs will be sent home after the day of the shoot. All orders will need to be made online with Ward-Hendry, you can either pay to have your order sent directly to your home address or choose to have it delivered to school free of charge. If any parent requires a further proof for whatever reason, please contact the School Office by this Wednesday. If you would like your child to have their photograph taken with a pre-school sibling, please bring them to the Music Room between 8.05am and 8.25am. All siblings in school will be photographed together unless otherwise requested. Jeans For Genes Jeans For Genes Day is a great way to bring the whole school together and raise money for children with genetic disorders. As a result, on Friday 22nd September all children will be able to wear jeans for a donation of a minimum of 1 per child in order to save lives. Your child will still need to wear their normal school Uniform, jumper or cardigan on their top halves. There will also be jean shaped biscuits on sale for 50p. There are between 4,000 and 6,000 diagnosed genetic disorders. It is estimated that one in 25 children is affected by a genetic disorder and therefore 30,000 babies and children are newly diagnosed in the UK each year. Some genetic disorders are apparent at birth while others are diagnosed at different stages throughout childhood, and sometimes into adulthood. We look forward to all children taking part in this worthwhile charity. 3

Nut Free School We have pupils in school with severe nut allergies. These allergies are such that the slightest contact with nuts could be life threatening. We therefore respectfully ask that no nuts are knowingly brought onto the premises by adults or children. This includes peanut butter and Nutella spread which I know is popular in lunch boxes. Please do not hesitate to contact the School Office if you have any further questions. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. 5
