TITLE: NUMBER: ISSUER: Selection of Mathematics Textbooks for High Schools Maria Wale, Assistant Superintendent Professional Learning, Development, and Leadership ROUTING Local District Superintendents Local District Directors, School Support Services High School Principals UTLA Chapter Chairs DATE: Due: April 9, 2008 PURPOSE: BACKGROUND: INSTRUCTIONS: This memorandum is intended to provide Local Districts (LD) and senior high schools with assistance and procedures for selecting materials from the list of Adopted High School Textbooks for Mathematics. On March 11, 2008, the Board of Education adopted the Mathematics textbooks and materials listed in Attachment A for use in District high schools. Each high school is to form a mathematics textbook selection committee to select the single most relevant and appropriate textbook for each mathematics course taught. The committee must consist of an Administrator, the Mathematics Department Chairperson, the Mathematics instructors, and staff qualified to represent English Learners, Standard English Learners, Students with Disabilities and Gifted students to ensure equal access to a quality Mathematics program. For Advanced Placement Courses, textbooks are to be selected by the individual teacher of the course. In addition, to proactively safeguard against potential conflicts of interest, each committee member must complete Form 700 and the Conflict Management form (Attachment C). Individuals with a conflict of interest may not serve on the committee. The original completed Form 700 should be submitted to the Ethics Office by the principal. The principal should keep the Conflict Management form on file. This committee will review the adopted materials for each Mathematics course and must reach consensus to select a single text for use by teachers in each course. Each individual instructor will be given the opportunity to select Advanced Placement materials from Attachment A or from the Advanced Placement course syllabi and teacher resources posted on the following website: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com As part of the selection process, school committees must consider the disaggregated data of student performance on the Mathematics CST, Professional Learning, Development, and Leadership 1 of 8
academic background and experience of the Mathematics instructors, the academic rigor of the textbooks, the appropriateness of the textbooks for English Learners, Standard English Learners, Students With Disabilities, and students identified as Gifted, in addition to coverage of the California standards in each textbook. The LDs will assist the high schools in the formation of these committees. Secondary Mathematics Branch Director will provide the LDs with detailed reviews of the Board adopted textbooks to share with the schools. The LDs will help the schools obtain examination copies of textbooks from the publishers. Publishers have been advised not to visit schools individually. Central office Secondary Mathematics staff will facilitate any requested publisher presentations at the LD. Once the selection committee has made its choices, the principal will complete Attachment B, Mathematics High School Textbook Selection Checklist, and return it to Textbook Services no later than Wednesday, April 9, 2008. Schools are directed to Textbooks Services website to retrieve the appropriate price list and order forms for each textbook selected and the Advanced Placement selections listed on Attachment A at the following website: http://textbookservices.lausd.net The price list and order forms will be posted under Mathematics under the Order Forms 9-12 link. These forms are Excel spreadsheets that will calculate pricing and list any free items provided by the publisher for the first year of the adoption. The school is responsible for completing these spreadsheets and delivering them to the LD office, so that the LD office can fund, input the order, and send the order to the publisher to insure that orders will be processed as quickly as possible. Principals in schools with year-round calendars must inventory existing Mathematics textbooks needs for July 1, 2008. If and when shortages are identified, LD staff must work with traditional calendar schools to identify inventory that can be moved into year-round schools the first week of July or sooner, so that each student has a book for home and school use for the summer track. Since all schools will be receiving the new adoption as soon as orders and deliveries can be completed, traditional school staff should not hesitate to move inventory to year-round schools as needed.
