Graduation Requirements Pursuant to Oregon law, the Board requires students to attend high school, grades 9-12; earn a minimum number of units of credit as listed below; meet performance standards in reading, writing, speaking and mathematics; complete an extended application that includes an education plan and profile and completion of two career-related learning experiences. Essential Skills as a requirement for graduation is as follows: Class of 2016 and beyond: Read and comprehend a variety of text, write clearly and accurately, apply mathematics in a variety of settings and listen actively and speak clearly and coherently. Assessment Options A claim score of 2515 on the reading portion of the Smarter Balanced English language arts test Two reading work samples, at least one informational. Score of 12 across the three traits, with each individual trait score of at least 3. Other graduation requirements: 1. Develop an extended application that includes an education plan and profile and completion of two career-related learning experiences; 2. Demonstrate extended application through a collection of evidence; and 3. Participate in career-related learning experiences. The district shall offer students credit options provided the method for obtaining such credit is described in the student s personal education plan and the credit is earned by meeting requirements described in OAR 581-022-1131. 3-6
2. Diplomas The district offers four diplomas: a standard diploma, a modified diploma, an extended diploma and the honors diploma. a. Standard Diploma (1) Per OAR 581-022-1130, in order to receive a standard diploma, a student must meet the following state and district requirements: (a) Credit requirements as previously listed; (b) Meet Essential Skills and district requirements in reading, writing, speaking, math and science; (c) Maintain an extended application that includes an education plan and profile and completion of two career-related learning experiences; (d) Demonstrate proficiency as outlined in the Extended Application expectations; (e) Students must meet the state attendance requirements as stated in ORS 339.010. b. Modified Diploma Students who have demonstrated the inability to meet the full set of academic content standards, even with reasonable accommodations, may be eligible for a modified diploma. A modified diploma may only be awarded to a student who meets the eligibility criteria listed below: (1) Has a documented history of an inability to maintain grade level achievement due to significant learning and instructional barriers; or (2) Has a documented history of a medical condition that creates a barrier to achievement. To earn a district modified diploma, a student must meet the following credit requirements: (1) English-3; (2) Mathematics-2; (3) Science-2; (4) Social Science-2; (5) Health-1; (6) Physical Education-1; (7) Career/The Arts/Secondary Language-3; and (8) Electives-10. Students should work towards the requirements for Essential Skills, maintain an extended application that includes an education plan and profile and completion of two career-related learning experiences, and demonstrate proficiency as outlined in the Extended Application expectations. A student s team will determine their eligibility for a modified diploma. (1) Districts may make modifications to the assessment for students who seek a modified diploma when the following conditions are met: 4-6
(a) (b) For a student on an IEP, any modifications to work samples must be consistent with the requirements established in the IEP. Modifications are changes to the achievement level, construct, or measured outcome of an assessment. This means that IEP or school teams responsible for approving modifications for a student s assessment may adjust the administration of the assessment and/or the assessment s achievement standard. For a student not on an IEP, any modifications to work samples must have been provided to the student during his/her instruction in the content area to be assessed, and in the year in which the student is being assessed, and modifications must be approved by the school team that is responsible for monitoring the student s progress toward the modified diploma. (2) Only students on an IEP or a 504 Plan may receive a modified state assessment. (3) A student s school team shall decide that a student should work toward a modified diploma no earlier than the end of grade six and no later than two years before the student s anticipated exit from high school. (4) A student s school team may decide to revise a modified diploma decision. (5) A student s school team may decide that a student who was not previously working towards a modified diploma should work towards one when the student is less than two years from anticipated exit from high school if the documented history has changed. c. Extended Diploma A student who has demonstrated the inability to meet the full set of academic content standards for a diploma while receiving modifications and accommodations, may earn a district extended diploma. To earn an extended diploma, the student must meet the following credit requirements: (1) Twelve total credits (no more than six credits within a self-contained special education classroom). (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) Two credits of mathematics; Two credits of English; Two credits of science; Three credits of history, geography, economics or civics; One credit of health; One credit of physical education; One credit of the arts or a second language. (2) Have a documented history of an inability to maintain grade level achievement due to significant learning and instructional barriers; or (3) Have a documented history of a medical condition that creates a barrier to achievements; and (4) Participate in an alternate assessment beginning no later than grade six and lasting for two or more assessment cycles; or (5) Have a serious illness or injury that occurs after grade eight, that changes the student s ability to participate in grade level activities and that results in the student participating in alternate assessments; 5-6
(6) Students earning an extended diploma are exempt from meeting the Essential Skills requirements, maintaining a personal education plan and profile and demonstrate proficiency as outlined in the Extended Application expectations. d. Honors Diploma A student who exceeds the requirements for a district standard diploma may earn a district honors diploma. To earn a district honors diploma, a student must meet district credit requirements. Five credits of the required credits must be advanced placement, junior and/or senior level honors, International Baccalaureate and/or approved college credit courses. In addition, students must attain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better through the seventh semester, demonstrate proficiency as outlined in the Extended Application expectations and meet district graduation requirements including Essential Skills. A student graduating early must maintain a 3.5 GPA through six semesters. Early/Late Graduation A student may complete requirements for graduation in less than a four-year period of time or take longer than four years. Early or late graduating students must meet the graduation requirements of their entering class. Students desiring to complete the program in less than four years must seek approval for an early completion/graduation plan with the designated building administrator. A student completing requirements early may request a statement attesting to the completion of the district s program. Students may receive diplomas at or following the formal graduation exercise at the end of spring semester. 3. Requirements for Program Completion: General a. Students transferring into the district must meet the state and district requirements for graduation. b. A senior transferring into the district during the eighth semester may be granted a district standard diploma, providing the district and state requirements are met. A senior not able to meet the district requirements may request a diploma from the previous school attended. c. Students may participate in the graduation exercise only if they complete district graduation requirements for the honors diploma, standard diploma, modified diploma, extended diploma or alternative certificate by the graduation date. d. A student withdrawing from school prior to graduation and reenrolling prior to their 21st birthday will meet the district requirements of his/her original entering class. 4. Requirements for Program Completion: Extended Application a. Extended Application is the application of knowledge and skills in the context of the student s personal and career post high school goals. b. Extended Application will be completed during the junior or senior year. 5. Alternative Certificates Two alternative certificates are available for students who are unable to complete all the requirements for a diploma. One certificate option is available for foreign exchange students, the certificate of attendance. The second, a certificate of attainment is available for the student whose individual education plan (IEP) indicates the appropriate primary course of study is life skills. 6-6
