January - March 2015 CIIT - ABBOTTABAD Alumni Reunion 2015 14 March 2015 CIIT Abbottabad organized Alumni Reunion on 14 March 2015. A large number of graduated students attended the event. They were given a very warm welcome by the CIIT Abbottabad's family. Addressing the audience, Director CIIT Abbottabad Prof. Dr Khan Gul Jadoon welcomed the graduated students and advised them to work hard in their professional lives. Event comprised a series of activities including "Tribute to deceased Alumni, campus updates, interaction of the last semester students with the alumni, campus updates, visit of Alumni round the campus and stage activities etc. Dr Kashif Bilal, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, CIIT Abbottabad expressed his gratitude on behalf of Alumni to CIIT Abbottabad for arranging the mega event. He stated that reunion is not only about the past but is also about the present and future. It is about what we may give to our institute, what we can do for it, in whatever capacity, in terms of accommodating our juniors at jobs and internships, in terms of supporting the institute morally and financially, and in whatever way we can and importantly cherish the growth of institute in terms of infrastructure, in terms of new programs and departments, and in terms of its achievements. Study Trip of Faculty of Chemistry Department to NIFA 20 February 2015 Dr Ahson Jabbar Shaikh along with Dr Tauqir A. Sherazi, Assistant Professors, Department of Chemistry, CIIT Abbottabad and MS Student Mr. Sajid Javed visited NIFA (Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture, Peshawer, Pakistan) on 20 February, 2015. They were shown the radiation facilities, methods for the preparation of growth media for edible mushrooms and production of mushrooms. News & Events 01

CIIT - ABBOTTABAD January - March 2015 Prof. Dr Peter Langer visits CIIT Abbottabad Department of Chemistry, 24 March 2015 Professor Dr Peter Langer, Department of Chemistry, University of Rostock, Germany visited CIIT Abbottabad on 24 March 2015. During his visit he delivered a lecture to the faculty and students of Department of Chemistry and Department of Pharmacy, CIIT Abbottabad. He also visited the Graduate labs of Chemistry and Pharmacy departments and appreciated the available facilities. In the evening, he left for dinner at German Embassy where Prof. Dr Khan Gul Jadoon, Director CIIT Abbottabad, Prof. Dr Abdur Rehman Khan, Head Department of Chemistry, CIIT Abbottabad along with some faculty members joined him. Tree Plantation Campaign A Provincial Government's Spring Planting Campaign in collaboration with Department of Environmental Sciences, CIIT Abbottabad Department of Environmental Sciences, 27 February 2015 Climate change is one of the greatest threats to the human kind. It has profound effects on food, health, energy consumption and other socioeconomic aspects. Trees, wood and forests can provide part of solution to face climate change and planting new trees is an attractive way to mitigate climate change. Tree plantation can also help society to adapt and resist the changing climate. Faculty and Students from the Department of Environmental Sciences, CIIT Abbottabad joined hands with the Forest Department of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government in Spring Planting Campaign at CIIT Abbottabad. Prof. Dr Muhammad Maroof Shah along with Dr Tahir Hayat and Miss Ghazal Khursheed arranged the said activity on 27 February 2015 at CIIT Abbottabad campus. Divisional Forest Officer Mr. Azher Ali Khan and his team launched the campaign by planting a sapling. The faculty and students started planting saplings with the help of forest staff. January - March 2015 CIIT - ABBOTTABAD wished Forest Department to be part of the plantation campaign in future, hence, extended the invitation to get as many people from their department involved as possible. CIIT has always been on the forefront in community services and matters of national interests. This time too as a gesture of good will CIIT did not miss the opportunity and ensured its maximum representation by actively participating in this noble task. Virtual Private Network for Digital Library Access By the grace of Almighty ALLAH 500 users (Faculty, MS/PhD Students) for VPN (Virtual Private Network) have been registered at CIIT Area Network (LAN) from home and other remote locations using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Users may connect to the CIIT Local 2 Days Workshop on Quantitative Data Analysis using SPSS Department of Mathematics, 10-11 March 2015 On request of Haripur University, two days workshop on Quantitative Data Analysis using SPSS was organized on 10-11 March 2015 for the professors of different departments of Haripur University including Departments of Agriculture, Forestry, Business and Information Technology. CIIT - ABBOTTABAD January - March 2015 Annual General Meeting of IEEE Islamabad Department of Electrical Engineering, 21 March 2015 Student Activities Committee of IEEE Islamabad Section holds Annual General Meeting in different cities. This time, they organized the meeting at CIIT Abbottabad campus on 21 March 2015. They were warmly welcomed by the HoD, faculty and students of Department of Electrical Engineering, CIIT Abbottabad. Hi tea and Dinner in honor of visiting team was hosted by Department of Electrical Engineering, CIIT Abbottabad. Executive committee, other local members and guests were also invited. The meeting included the executive report, appointment of new officers, and awards presentation. Faculty members and students from different universities attended the meeting. Chief Guest Dr Mansoor Malik emphasized on organizing seminars in a more productive and efficient manner. January - March 2015 CIIT - ABBOTTABAD Dr Wajahat Mahmood participates in International Conference on Recent Innovations in Pharmaceutical Science Department of Pharmacy, 3-5 March 2015 Dr Wajahat Mahmood, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy, CIIT Abbottabad along with two of his MS Pharmaceutical Chemistry students participated in the "International Conference on Recent Innovations in Pharmaceutical Science" held jointly by the Ripah Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, HEC and Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan in Islamabad on 3-5 March 2015. He updated the audience with an oral presentation while his MS students Mr. Wali Inam and Ms. Aisha Altaf presented their posters. Seminar on Wildlife Conservation Awareness Department of Development Studies, 25 March 2015 The Wildlife Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is implementing several activities for conservation of wildlife in the province. One of the initiatives is promoting conservation education and awareness for sensitization of general masses and students at the grass root level through formal and informal approaches. Realizing the need to sensitize the students at University and colleges, a campaign has been initiated to deliver special lectures throughout the province in various institutes. Therefore, joining hands in the efforts of conservation, Department of Development Studies CIIT Abbottabad organized a seminar in collaboration with the Wildlife department of the Khyber Paktunkhuwa for awareness raising regarding Wildlife Conservation on 25 March News & Events 05

CIIT - ABBOTTABAD January - March 2015 2015. DFO Wildlife Extension Mr. Niaz Khan was the guest speaker at the occasion. He deliberated on the importance of wildlife and explained the concept in the light of Quran and also highlighted different aspects of wildlife conservation and role of local community and youth in promoting awareness and contribution towards the conservation efforts. The issue was highlighted through an interactive mode of lecture, discussion and wildlife video display. About 20 faculty members of Development Studies Department and Environmental Sciences Department and 200 students of Bachelor of Development Studies and Environmental Sciences attended the seminar. Students took keen interest in the different aspects of conservation efforts as highlighted in the seminar. Students of Development Studies Department grab First Position in Social Innovation Mela, LUMS Department of Development Studies, 20-21 March 2015 It is a matter of pride for CIIT Abbottabad in general and Department of Development Studies, CIIT Abbottabad in particular that two students of the department Mr. Niqash Ahmad (BDS-3) and Mr. Irfan Naseem (BDS-5) participated in the International Social Innovation Challenge held at LUMS Lahore on 20-21 March 2015 and stood first in the competition. The event brought together social entrepreneurs from Pakistan and academics and field practitioners from India, US and UK onto a single platform. There were four panel discussions during the two days event, an exhibition and social innovation challenge. The topics for panel discussions were: E n g a g i n g E n v i r o n m e n t s ; H o w c a n Universities Facilitate the Cause of Social Justice and Community Engagement? Lessons from the Field; Studies of Enterprises such as the Gulmit Carpet Weaving Center in Hunza. Success Stories from around the Globe a s s u r i n g t h e E v o l u t i o n o f S o c i a l Entrepreneurship in Today's World. Celebrating Innovation; Many Notable Enterprises in Pakistan have shown Commitment in Improving the Lives of Low Income Consumers. For the social innovation challenge, participants had to present an idea which aimed to accomplish empowerment of rural women through economic and social incentives. The criteria of judgment was based on forecast of outcomes, scale of innovation of idea, implementation process, and impact in both qualitative and quantitative terms. In addition to prove the sustainability of the idea, there were only three minutes given to explain all the content to audience. Besides winning the competition, the students also got short listed for Global Innovation Challenge; an event expected to be held at O.P. Jindal Global University in India. 06 News & Events

January - March 2015 CIIT - ABBOTTABAD Accreditation of EPE Program from Pakistan Engineering Council Department of Electrical Engineering The accreditation visit conducted by PEC during t h e l a s t q u a r t e r r e p o r t e d p o s i t i v e recommendations and EPE program is accredited. Applications for BEE and BCE are submitted for accreditation in this quarter and the visits are expected to be conducted in the coming quarter for which necessary arrangements and preparations have been made by the department. Department of Electrical Engineering, CIIT Abbottabad after excelling at the undergraduate Farewell Party Arranged in Honor of Fall 2011 Batch Department of Electrical Engineering, 15 March 2015 IEEE Students' Branch, CIIT Abbottabad organized a farewell for the Batch Fall 2011 on 15 March 2015. Event started with a marvelous performance of Mr. Sajjad Ahmed, one of the national level dance competition winner. This performance was about a social issue and was highly appreciated by the audience. Dr Abdur Rasheed, Head Department of Electrical Engineering, CIIT Abbottabad congratulated all Dr Muhammad Javid Iqbal, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, CIIT Abbottabad participated in a Consultative Meeting to Review Food Composition Table and Dietary Guidelines for Pakistan at Planning Commission, Nutrition Division, Newsbite level is striving for excellence in MS and PhD levels. For this reason a thorough survey has been done to improve the research work by publishing research in the world's leading Journals like IEEE and ICT etc. The preparation of the course outline at undergraduate and graduate level is another step towards the concept of objective based learning which shall prove beneficial in accreditation by ABBOTT, an internationally known accreditation body. students for completing four years of their studies successfully. CIIT - ABBOTTABAD January - March 2015 Visit of National Business Education Accreditation Council 10-12 March 2015 Delegation from National Business Education Accreditation Council (NBEAC) visited CIIT Abbottabad on 10-12 March 2015. They went round the campus and met faculty and students. They also visited the Library and were highly appreciative of all facilities. Delegation comprised the following: Dr Tashfeen Azhar, Professor, University of Management & Technology, Lahore Dr Huma Amir, Assistant Professor, IBA Karachi Dr Syed Azhar Hussain Shah, Regional Head National Bank, Abbottabad Mr. Adil Amin Kazi, HoD, FAST Islamabad Ms. Sania Tufail, Program Manager, NBEAC CIIT Abbottabad's Student Participates in the Flobal Ugrad Cultural Exchange Program Department of Electrical Engineering It is an honor for CIIT Abbottabad as one of its student of Electrical Engineering Department Mr. Qaiser Nawab (SP12-EPE-098) got selected for the Global Ugrad Cultural Exchange Program 2014-15. He along with 118 other students from Pakistan got selected after screening of 10,000 applicants. Global UGRAD Cultural Exchange program empowers the students to actively participate in establishing cordial relations with the people of Pakistan and USA". He was selected as Cultural Ambassador for the subject visit. He represented his culture and gained exposure to the diversity of US culture. He visited 16 states of USA during the visit and highlighted Pakistan's soft image. While introducing COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, he presented CIIT Abbottabad's Newsletters to representatives of state department in USA. January - March 2015 CIIT - ABBOTTABAD th 16 Faculty Development Workshop 23-27 February 2015 th 16 Faculty Development Workshop (FDW-16) was organized and conducted by Campus Faculty Development Forum (CFDF) on 23-27 February 2015. 22 new faculty members from Departments of Management Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics participated in the workshop and received certificates on successful completion. CIIT - ABBOTTABAD January - March 2015 Two Days Workshop on Women Leadership in Higher Education Department of Management Sciences, 21-22 February 2015 A two days workshop on Women Leadership in Higher Education was organized by Department of Management Sciences, CIIT Abbottabad on 21-22 February 2015. Dr Noor Jehan, Vice Chancellor, University of Swabi presented the inaugural address. On the second day of workshop, Dr Funda Sivrikaya Serifoglu, President of Duzce University and Dr Nigar Demircan Cakar, VP Duzce University, Turkey presented their introductory session. Thematic Workshop on Water Conservation, Purification and Recycling Department of Development Studies, 27-30 March 2015 Department of Development Studies, CIIT Abbottabad has been holding thematic workshops on water issues since two years. The topic of this year's workshop was Water Conservation, Purification and Recycling which was organized by the Department of Development Studies and the Department of Environmental Sciences jointly. The workshop was organized on 28 March 2015 as part of the ongoing event in Pak-China Business Forum held on 27-30 March 2015 at Pak-China Business Centre Islamabad. The participants of the workshop were primarily the students and faculty of the Department of Development Studies and the Department of Environmental Sciences from CIIT Abottabad and the students of many other universities from Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The workshop offered a distinguished list of some very renowned people from the field of water conservation. After the welcome address by the Dean, Faculty of Business Administration Dr Qaiser Abbass, Chief Guest Mr. Sajjad Ahmad, DG Environment, Ministry of Climate Change opened the session and highlighted the efforts of his ministry and importance of such workshops in sensitizing the society about environmental issues. Dr Mathias Winige, Ex-Rector University of Bonn, Germany shared the outcomes of his work on Future of Glaciers and Indus River System in Pakistan. Ms. Sadia Yaqoob from UNICEF delivered an interesting and thought provoking speech in which she introduced the inequities in the provision of water for domestic consumption. Water aid and Plan International, UN Habitat and Norwegian Church aid also introduced the role of different NGO's and INGO's in the provision of safe water and improved sanitation in Pakistan.
