Blast off into Hawaii s Future: Hawaii on the Move The Blast Off into Hawaii's Future series covers 5 major areas in computer technology: Desktop Publishing, Spreadsheets, Word Processing, Databases and Multimedia. In Blast Off into Hawaii s Future, the students will create a brochure, an advertisement, and a poster using desktop publishing software. They will use spreadsheets to analyze and input tables that will allow them to create visually stimulating charts. Word processing skills that we teach will allow the students to design effective press releases to advertise their business services. Students will also use database skills to sort, filter, and create forms which will teach them how to quickly and efficiently access information that would otherwise be difficult to access in other programs. Finally, students will create a PowerPoint slide show that pulls together all of the information they researched about building a future Hawaii. to Unit 1 This year s curriculum, Blast Off into Hawaii s Future will focus on exploring what Hawaii will look like in the future. The students will be using their creativity and imagination to paint a picture of how people will move, live, and have fun in the future. The first unit, Guide to Hawaii s Future has the students focusing on desktop publishing skills and will challenge the students to create their own guide to Hawaii s Future. Lesson 1.1 In Lesson 1.1, the students are introduced to Microsoft Publisher 2010. Basic menu items are discussed and shown. Then the students will begin developing the inside cover of their brochure. They will be formatting text and WordArt. Students are introduced to the following computer concepts and desktop publishing tools: How to create a folder to save their work in for the rest of the year The concept of desktop publishing How to launch a desktop publishing application and how to open, save and print pages Use menus and icons to complete tasks 2008 Ohana Komputer Page R1_Intro - 2 of 5
Lesson 1.2 Blast off into Hawaii s Future: Hawaii on the Move In Lesson 1.2, the students will be working on the back page of the brochure, which will include some contact information and some statistics for the year 2059, as well as the cover pages of their brochure. The lesson will focus on introducing students to the following computer Creating a text box Inserting a text file Entering and formatting text Creating a WordArt Title Inserting Moving/Re-sizing/formatting shapes Inserting a picture Define scratch area Rotating a text box Cutting and Pasting objects Lesson 1.3 In Lesson 1.3, the students will be working on the second and third panels on the inside part of their brochures. They will be including an introduction to Asimo, their partner in the Blast Off into Hawaii s Future adventure, and also include information on how people will move, live, and play in the future. Lesson 1.4 Blast off into Hawaii s Future: Hawaii on the Move In Lesson 1.4, the students will be working on the very last page of the brochure, where the students will learn about where Asimo will take us on our adventure into Hawaii s Future. They will also be modifying the two inside pages that they produced in the last lesson, formatting the text boxes and also adding pictures to make their article more exciting. This lesson will focus on introducing students to the following computer Cut and Paste text Creating a WordArt Text box margins Inserting a picture from file Cropping a photo Text wrapping Insert a Drop Cap Lesson 1.5 In Lesson 1.5, the students will be using Microsoft Publisher s New Publication Wizard to create a business card, which will have their name, and some contact information on it. Blast off into Hawaii s Future: Hawaii on the Move Lesson 1.6 In Lesson 1.6, the students will be using Microsoft Publisher s New Publication Wizard to create an advertisement for one of the new products that you mentioned in the brochure. This lesson will focus on introducing students to the following computer Create a Blank Document Insert pictures Aligning objects Adding a shadow effect Adding a shape style Insert a picture Add a shape Add border art Assessment 1.7 In the final lesson of Unit One the students will create a ticket for the new products show. The tickets will include a picture, as well as the date and time of the activity and BorderArt.
