Skyline PBIS Student and Staff Handbook The Titan Way This handbook was created to provide clarity for staff regarding our behavior expectations of our students and the staff response to behaviors. Positive Behavior Expectations and Supports for Skyline Students and Staff

Honoring the Titan Way The Titan Way is a set of behaviors designed in collaboration with the students and staff. These expectations are taught to create a positive school culture and climate. PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture that is needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. The expected behaviors are listed above for each common area. Students demonstrating these expected behaviors will be awarded points that can be turned in to the student store for an item of their choice.

!2 Students demonstrating the Core Values of Skyline will be recognized by teachers, administration, or support staff on a monthly basis with a bracelet bearing the name of the Core Value. If a student receives all 3 bracelets in a semester they will be honored at an assembly. Any student caught demonstrating any of the behaviors listed under each character value will be awarded points. Your PBIS Incentive Menu will be finalized and posted soon.**

!4 We Are Titans Students at Skyline High School wear their ID s and start class on time. On time means Students are expected to be in the classroom before tardy bell rings. Tardiness will directly impact completion of the class warm up and overall class performance. Every period, teachers will close their doors and not allow student to enter until 5 minutes after the late bell rings. Any student late for class must get a tardy pass at the designated locations in order to be admitted into class. After receiving a pass the student will hurry to class, an excessive late to class may incur additional consequences. When a student is out of class they should have a pass from their teacher or they will be scanned into the system each time they are stopped by an adult the student may get additional consequences. Several referrals may result in a Student Success Team (SST) meeting or SART/SARB meeting and a citation from the Alameda County District Attorney s Office. Chronic Tardies (SART) Students who are chronically tardy to school or to class may be addressed by any adult including, Admin, RJ Support, and/or SSO. These students will receive progressive discipline and will be documented in the ABI school record.

!5 Skyline s ID Policy Students must wear their ID s at all times. If a student does not have their ID they will be directed to the Administration Building where they will be required to get a temporary ID printed to wear. There will be a $1 charged to the student s account for the temporary ID. After 3 temporary ID s the student will get a new ID and will be charged $5. Ensuring safety on the campus: Individuals on campus will be subject to random security scans for prohibited objects. Please make sure to accommodate the individuals who are conducting the security scanning. Eluding the school security or administrators creates an unsafe school environment. Apprehended students will be disciplined and receive the appropriate administrative consequence pending a parent conference Off limits areas: The fire roads and behind buildings are off limits Skyline s Pass Policy Passes will NOT be given during the first and last 10 minutes of class. Passes are required in accordance with school-wide policy and visible at all times. Electronic Policy Skyline will not be accountable for lost or stolen electronics. If you do decide to bring electronics, all electronic devices must be powered off and out of sight during class time. Each of the following steps will be documented in the student s record. When a student is out of compliance with the Electronic Policy the following consequences will be enacted: The student will hand phone to the adult, parents may be called to pick-up phone and student may have to serve Lunch Detention, In-School Suspension, After School Detention or Community Service. The following consequences will be enacted when students do not honor these expectations: 1st incident Verbal Warning 2nd incident 3rd incident 4th incident Student will hand phone to teacher. Teacher will return phone to student at the end of period. Phone Call Home. Student will hand phone to teacher. Teacher will return phone to student at the end of period. Phone Call Home. Student will hand phone to teacher. Teacher will return phone to student at the end of period. URF

!6 Selling Items on Campus Students are not allowed to sell any items on campus unless the Associate Student Body (ASB) approves them. Each of the following steps will be documented in the student s record. The following consequences will be enacted when students do not honor these expectations: 1st incident Student s items are confiscated and given to administration. Call home. Items are released to parent/guardian. 2nd incident 3rd incident Student s items are confiscated and given to administration. Call home. Items are released to parent/guardian. Student will receive Lunch Detention, ISS, or Restorative Hour. Student s items are confiscated and given to administration. Call home. Items are released to parent/guardian. URF. ***Note: If student refuses to hand over item/s, teacher will call home and write a referral.*** Marijuana, Alcohol, and Other Illegal Substances (possession and/or consumption) Each of the following steps will be documented in the student s record. The following consequences will be enacted when students are caught in possession and/or consuming legal substances on campus: 1st incident 1 day suspension. Referral to TUPE 2nd incident 3rd incident 2 day suspension. Referral to off-site support/counseling 3 day suspension. Dress Code Students shall at all times dress and groom themselves in a manner which demonstrates respect for the seriousness of the learning environment. Each of the following steps will be documented in the student s record. Dress Code expectations: Hats, Visors, Head Scarves, and Hoods obscuring a student s face is not permitted. Teachers will address the wearing of hats as part of their individual classroom norms. No see-through clothing Shirts should fall below the belly button Skirts and shorts should be longer than the student s middle finger when arms are at the student s side. No clothing that depict controlled substances No clothing with Sexual innuendos Skirts/shorts/garment must equal the length of student's fingertips when arms are held straight by the body. Pants should be worn around waist (No Sagging)

!7 The following consequences will be enacted when students do not honor these expectations: 1st incident Warning. Student will be asked to wear clothing as described by dress code expectations. 2nd incident 3rd incident Student will be asked to wear clothing as described by dress code expectations. Call home. Incident documented in ABI. Student will be asked to wear clothing as described by dress code expectations. Call home. URF Fighting According to OUSD, fighting is defined as mutual combat resulting in minor injuries or instigating a physical altercation. Students that are involved in a fight will receive one, or more, of the following consequences: Parent Consultation Suspension Referral for Expulsion Report Filed with Oakland Police Department All other inappropriate behavior that impacts the learning environment will be handled with progressive discipline. Examples: Sharing videos of students fighting, sexting, and sexual harassment, bullying, drinking, and gambling. Please refer to the Discipline Code on the OUSD website for additional behaviors and consequences.

The Skyline Community has agreed upon a supportive and family-centered learning environment. In order to maintain and grow this community, we have developed and implemented a set of behavior expectations that we all follow with consistency and fidelity. As a member of this school community, we expect that you hold yourself accountable to following the following expectations.!8 Titans Show Respect Titans Have Integrity Titans Achieve Excellence The basic student expectations include: The basic staff expectations include: o Attending all classes on time o Remaining on the school campus during regular school hours o Following school rules o Being cooperative with other students and school staff o Seeking assistance from teachers and administrators to resolve school related problems o Maintaining passing grades and demonstrate progress in all subjects o Participate in at least one extracurricular school activities (i.e. athletics, service club, special interest club). o Follow any contract or agreement made to the school Entering Points into HERO Monitoring your student s behavior and consistently documenting behavior in ABI Attending all conferences concerning your students Utilizing Intervention techniques Positively cooperating with students and other staff Proactively communicating all concerns to the PBIS team Participating in data analysis Seeking assistance from teachers and administrators to resolve problems

!9 APPENDIX DEFINITIONS Patiently Wait Waiting patiently while waiting in line or for help. Right Time Only Only being in an area when you should be there. Only Lunch or called Only going to the administrative and counseling offices during lunch or when called. Be professional Making informed and mature choices that help us work together for the benefit of the group. Be productive Making sure that we are putting in our best effort and making things better. Tone & volume Using your voice in a manner that reduces distractions for others during school. Step up, Speak, Act Responding appropriately to a student in need by intervening or notifying school staff Hustle and Flow Displaying motivation and drive in getting to class early Community Keeper Keeping an eye out for opportunities ourselves and our peers to maintain cleanliness and safety in our community. Making sure that we leave an area better than how we found it. Use Email if Necessary Using email, and other available technology, to communicate with school staff when a meeting is not possible Patience + Persistence Finding ways to overcome adversity to complete a task or assignment Clean, Free & Clear Keeping hallways and pathways free of trash, traffic, and obstacles. Listen to staff Rules and procedures may vary slightly based on the activity. Please make sure that you are listening to staff for any new rules and procedures that may apply to any particular activity or event. Pass or class You need to have a pass. If you do not have a pass, you need to be in class. Walkways & stairs ways only Make sure that we are only using walkways and stairs. Please do not travel down the side of hills as it may cause injury. Tech Down Turn off all technology unless permitted to do so by teacher. Come prepared Make sure that you have all necessary documents when meeting with staff. Master Titan Student selected every three weeks by teachers and coaches. Students are by department, freshman house, academy, and athletic team.

Walk with Purpose When walking in the hallway, walk to your destination quickly and while staying on course. Grit Award Increasing your grade point average by.5. Applaud/cheer Provide recognition and support for other Titans by clapping and cheering respectfully. Quick & clean Use the restroom quickly while keeping the restroom clean, neat, and orderly. I ll share Show respect to your community by sharing your seat when someone is in need. Teacher s Choice Reserved for teachers to recognize a behavior that is not included in the behavior matrix. Body Bubble Respect other Titan s personal space. Make sure that we are using items, rooms, and other objects on campus for the reasons they were made. My space only Park correctly by using only one parking stall. Foyer eating only Eating is only permitted in the Foyer of the Auditorium.!10
