MATERIALS: Textbook, paper (8-1/2 by 11 inches), pencils or pens (no red pen). Optional: simple, arithmetic calculator with square root key. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Review and practice in fundamental computational skills including operations with whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, and proportions; metric and English systems of measurement and geometric formulas, introduction to algebra, including signed numbers and simple linear equations. Includes laboratory, study group, collaborative workshop time designed to reinforce and enhance the learning of Basic Mathematics. Prerequisite: None. COURSE CONTENT: We will cover all sections of chapters one through eight. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. perform accurate computations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals, signed and unsigned;

2. demonstrate a knowledge of the properties of addition and multiplication for numbers and variable expressions; 3. demonstrate a knowledge of ratios, proportions and percentages and their applications; 4. demonstrate the knowledge of geometric figures and their properties; 5. demonstrate a knowledge of the English and metric units of length, area, volume, mass, temperature, and time; 6. understand the use of variables; 7. demonstrate competence solving linear equations; 8. demonstrate an understanding of mean and median; 9. apply the concepts learned to specific real-life applications, mail order, restaurants, bank statements etc; 10. use various measuring instruments accurately; 11. solve problems on their own with peers without having to rely on the instructor; 12. write and solve word problems. EVALUATION Your grade in this course will be based on homework, exams, attendance and workshop as explained below. You are expected to complete all assignments on time. Late work will NOT be accepted. It is expected that all work will reflect your own individual effort and no one else's. Homework (75 points). When homework is assigned, it will be due the class meeting after the assignment is given, unless indicated otherwise. These problems will not be graded individually, but the work will be checked for overall completeness. Start each section of homework on a new page. Multiple pages should be stapled in the upper lefthand corner. Your name and the course number should appear in the upper right-hand corner. At the end of the semester your homework points will be based on the percentage of completed, on-time assignments you have turned in. For example, if you complete 85% of the assignments, you will receive 85% of 75 points (64 points). You may miss up to three assignments without penalty. Workshop (100 points). Active participation in class is an important part of the math learning experience. It is expected that while in class you will give your full attention to the subject matter at hand. You should not work on homework for this or any other course while in the classroom, unless directed otherwise. You will be asked to participate in individual and small-group work in-class. These activities may include written- or boardwork. A record of these activities will be kept and you will receive credit based on the percentage of activities you have completed. There are no make-ups on missed work, but you may miss two activities without penalty. Attendance (25 points). It is required that you attend class and workshop. Your success in this course depends on your being in class. The workshop is a regular, required part of the class and the exercises done in workshop are part of your course grade. If you have no more than two absences over the course of the semester you will receive 25 points for

attendance. If you miss class more than twice, you will lose 5 points each time you are absent. Exams (500 points). You will take five in-class, one hour exams. Each exam will be worth 100 points. You may replace your lowest nonzero exam score with the average of your other four exams and the final exam. Make-up Policy. If you miss an exam, you will be allowed to make it up, subject to the following conditions: You have made arrangements to take a make-up prior to the test date; or In the event of an emergency, you contact the instructor within 24 hours of the test and can provide written documentation supporting your reason for missing the test. The make-up exam must be taken before the next class meeting unless otherwise arranged. Only one make-up exam will be allowed. The make-up exam must be taken in the Math X Lab (rooms 503/505) during the time periods when that facility is available for test proctoring. Final Exam. A required, comprehensive Final Exam will be given on Thursday, December 16, 9:30 11:20 a.m. The final exam will be worth 150 points. Failure to take the Final Exam will result in a grade of ``F". ALL Examinations are closed-book and closed-note (with the exception of formulas provided by the instructor). NO electronic devices may be in use during an exam. Timed Tests. In order to get credit for this course you MUST pass timed tests on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers. Each of these tests will be given once in class during the first or second week. You will be given one and onehalf minutes for each test. If you do not pass these tests the first time you can retake them during workshop times or my office hours. Calculator. In general you will not be allowed to use a calculator in this course. A calculator may be used for some of the work done in Chapters 6, 7 and 8; it will not be used for any of the work done in Chapter 1 5 or 9. You may not use a calculator to do homework, unless the problem specifically requires a calculator. Calculators may not be used on exams. Calculators for in-class work will be provided when needed. COURSE GRADES: To receive a passing grade in this course your combined average on your four highest exams plus the final must be 70% or better and you must have passed all four timed tests. If you have a passing exam average and have passed the four timed tests, then your letter grade in this course will be assigned based on the total number points you have earned as follows. 680 764 B 595 679 C 510 594 D Below 510 F If you do not have a passing exam average at the end of the semester a letter grade of D or F will be assigned. Attendance. You are required to attend class every day. Each day you miss will count against you. Please talk with me if you run into any attendance problems. Note that arriving late or leaving early counts as an absence. The Las Positas College attendance policy will be observed: If you are absent for a total of four consecutive or six cumulative instructional hours and/or two consecutive weeks, you may be dropped from the class at my discretion. (An instructional hour is 50 minutes.) If you want to drop this class or any other, however, be sure to do it yourself at the Office of Admissions and Records so that it is recorded by the deadline. Behavior. It is expected that you will follow the Student Conduct Policy found in the Las Positas College Catalog; you are responsible for reading and understanding this policy. I highlight a few of the rules here. Courteous and respectful behavior is expected at all times. Cheating will not be tolerated; anyone caught cheating on an exam will receive 0 points for the exam and may be referred to the Dean of Students. This exam cannot be replaced by the final exam. If you submit someone else s work as your own, that is cheating and you will not receive credit for the work submitted. Pagers and cell phones should be set on vibrate or turned off while in the classroom. Children are not allowed in the classroom by law. Please do not bring visitors to the classroom unless you have cleared it with the instructor before the class begins. Absolutely no visitors are allowed in the classroom during an exam.
