Course Overview Competition for the best university places is becoming more intense each year. Students rightly concentrate on attaining the necessary grades but these days that is not enough. University admissions teams are faced with an overwhelming number of applications from students with very similar qualifications and grades. As a result, being called by an admissions team to interview is increasingly becoming a critical part of securing a university offer. Historically the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge are the two universities to interview candidates as part of the application process. In the past few years, an increasing number of British universities are following suit. With very few exceptions, students are all amateur interviewees. Interview success is founded on the ability to communicate, problem solve and connect to be the best on the day. These skills can be learned and they have a very significant impact on success. When a university admissions team calls students for interview, they never invite anyone that they are not prepared to admit. The best interviewee will be successful. Sample list of Universities interviewing prospective candidates (not an exclusive list) University of Cambridge University of Oxford Imperial College University College London University of Exeter University of Manchester University of York University of Leeds University of Birmingham University of Warwick Kings College University of Bristol Interviews are not embedded into all subjects and courses at UK Universities. It often comes down to an individual course department as to whether you ll be interviewed or not. The following is a rough guideline on the likelihood of being called to interview by broad subject areas. It is vital that all students check their course entry requirements and whether an interview is a likelihood. Most likely: professional training and/or vocational degrees such as medicine, dentistry, law, education, social work and nursing. Portfolio/audition based interviews - likely: talent-based degrees such as music, acting, architecture, art and design. Possible: sciences, engineering, computing. Least likely: humanities and social science degrees such as English, politics, history and geography (with the exception of specific selective Universities who interview all their short-listed candidates) 2
