396 About the Contributors Mohammad Ataul Karim is Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic and Students Affairs of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where he is a professor of electrical and computer engineering with expertise on computing, electro-optical displays and systems, information processing, and pattern recognition. During 2009-2013, he was Vice President for Research of Old Dominion University in Virginia. Professor Karim is an elected fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Optical Society of America (OSA), Society of Photo-Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), the Institute of Physics (InstP), the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), and Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He has authored 18 books, 7 chapters, and over 375 research articles. In addition to being the Editor of Optics & Laser Technology and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Education, he guest-edited to-date 33 journal special issues. Karim received his BS in Physics in 1976 from the University of Dacca, Bangladesh, and MS degrees in both Physics and Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering all from the University of Alabama, respectively, in 1978, 1979, and 1981. Mohammad Kaykobad is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology. He received his M.S. (Honors) in Engineering in 1979 from Odessa Maritime University, in Russia, M.Eng. degree in 1982 from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, and completed PhD in 1986 from the Flinders University of South Australia. Elected a fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, he is known for his leadership role in pushing forward the higher education agenda of Bangladesh, in particular, in science, mathematics, and information technology. He has authored 15 books, over 45 refereed journal articles, and over 200 opinion pieces in leading dailies. Recognized as the Outstanding Coach in 2002, he has been leading BUET team to participate in the World Finals of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) ICPC since 1998. He has also played a pioneering role in introducing Bangladeshi school/college students to International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). Manzur Murshed is an Associate Professor and Head of Gippsland School of Information Technology, Monash University, Australia, with major research interests in the fields of Video Technology, Wireless Communications, Information Theory, Distributed Coding, and Security and Privacy. He received his B.Sc.Eng. (Hons.) degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1994, and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the

Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, in 1999. He has authored over 160 refereed papers and received more than $1 million nationally competitive research funding including three Australian Research Council Discovery Project grants. He has successfully supervised 16 PhD students and five postdoctoral research fellows. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, an Editor of International Journal of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting, and has had served as a Guest Editor of special issues of Journal of Multimedia. * * * Farruk Ahmed is a Professor in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), Dhaka. Previously he worked as Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, University of Dhaka, and also of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in North South University, Bangladesh. Areas of his teaching and research interests include Digital Signal Processing, Communication Engineering, Microcomputer and Microprocessor based systems, Feedback Control Systems, and Electronic Instrumentation. He is an author or co-author of nearly 180 papers and research articles in various national and international journals and conference proceedings. He holds a PhD degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Salford in Manchester, England. He has been the President of Bangladesh Electronics Society for about 10 years. Sabrina Ahmed is a Database Specialist in Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Head Quarter in the PMT (Proxy Means Testing) Project. Sabrina earned her Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from United International University (UIU), Dhaka. Her research area covers character recognition and network security. Nasreen Akter is doing her M.Sc. in Computer Science at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, NS-Canada. She completed her graduation in Computer Science and Engineering from United International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2012 and under-graduation in CSE from Military Institute of Science and Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2007. Her research interests are image processing and segmentation. Al-Mahmud is both a lecturer and post-graduate student of Computer Science and Engineering at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Bangladesh. He received his BSc. Degree in CSE from KUET in 2010. His research interests lies in the area of Soft Computing, Bio-inspired Computing, Natural Language Processing, Graph Theory, Cryptography and Fault Tolerant Systems. Nawab Yousuf Ali is chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received MSc. in Computer Engineering from L vov Polytechnic Institute, Lvov, Ukraine, USSR, in 1992 and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Amitava Das Amitava is a Postdoctoral Scientist at IDI, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway. He did his PhD from Jadavpur University, India. His research areas of interest are related with human language, mind and artificial intelligence, Formal Linguistics, Machine Intelligence, and Cognitive Science with a current focus on Sentiment Analysis. Samiul Azam received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Military Institute of Science Technology (MIST), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2009, where he has been a Lecturer since 2010. Now he is pursuing M.Sc. program in Computer Science and Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Areas of his research interests include language processing, image processing, and computational geometry. Sivaji Bandyopadhyay is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Jadavpur University. He received his Ph.D., Master, and Bachelor degrees in Computer Science and Engineering all from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, respectively, in 1998, 1987, and 1985. He is engaged with several noteworthy national and international projects involving Cross Lingual Information Access, English to Indian Languages Machine Translation Systems, and Sentiment Analysis. He has had more than 100 publications in conferences and journals and has served in varying capacities with many workshops and conferences. Anupam Basu is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kharagpur where from he received his Ph.D. degree in 1984. He is Prof-in-charge of Media Lab Asia IIT Kharagpur and has received da Vinci Award from the Engineering Society of Detroit, USA, and Multiple Scelerosis Society of Michigan, USA (2004), Sir. J. C. Bose Memorial Award for Best Engineering Paper in IETE (2004), and Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (1997). Dipankar Das is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Meghalaya, India. In October 2012, he submitted his thesis for the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He received his Master of Computer Science and Engineering degree from Jadavpur University in 2009 and B. Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata, in 2005. His research interests are in the areas of Natural Language Processing, Emotion Analysis, Affect Computing, Information Extraction, and Language Generation. Suprabhat Das has completed his B.Tech degree (in Computer Science) in 2008 from Kalyani Govt. Engineering College, West Bengal and Master of Science (by Research) degree from IIT Kharagpurin 2012. He has worked on rule based Bengali stemmer, analysis of lexical richness and stylistic authorship attribution from Bengali literary works. Sankar De is an Assistant Professor of Computer Application at Gupta College of Technological Sciences, Asansol, West Bengal, India. He completed his Master of Computer Application (MCA) degree in 2000 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, where he is also a student of M. Tech. in Distributed and Mobile Computing. Björn Gambäck is Professor of Language Technology at the Department of Computer and Information Science at NTNU, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway, as well as Head of European Collaboration at SICS, Swedish Institute of Computer Science AB, Stockholm, Sweden. He has previously worked at the University of the Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany; Helsinki University, Finland; the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden; and Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Prof. Gambäck has published over 100 scientific papers on subjects such as conversational agents, spoken dialogue translation, system evaluation, and machine learning. Debasis Ganguly is a Doctoral student in the School of Computing, Dublin City University (DCU), Ireland. He obtained his Bachelor degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Kalyani University, India, in 2004, the Masters degree in Computing Science from Indian Statistical Institute in 2008 with first class (Hons.). Before joining DCU, he worked for two years as an R&D engineer on developing tools for logic synthesis of FPGA chips in Synopsys, India. His current research interests include information retrieval, question answering, and navigation and visualization of search results. Utpal Garain is an Associate Professor of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. His research interest includes Document Image Analysis (DIA), OCRs, handwriting analysis, and document authentication for forensic purposes, etc. Dr. Garain is an associate editor for IJDAR, Springer. For his significant contribution in PR and its applications in language engineering, Dr. Garain received the Young Engineer Award in 2006 from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). In 2011, he received the Indo-US Research Fellowship in the field of Engineering Sciences. Shahina Haque is an Assistant Professor of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at Daffodil International University in Bangladesh and a Doctoral student of Information Engineering at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. She received her B.Sc. (Honors) and M.Sc. in Applied Physics and Electronics from Rajshahi University. Her current research interests are speech, image, and bio-medical signal processing. K. M. Azharul Hasan is with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Bangladesh, since 2001. He received his B.Sc. (Engg.) from Khulna University, Bangladesh, in 1999, and M.E. from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, in 2002, both in Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Fukui, Japan, in 2006. His research interest lies in the areas of databases and his main research interests include Parallel and distributed databases, Parallel algorithms, Computational Linguistics, Information retrieval, Data warehousing, Multidimensional databases, and Software maintenance. Syed Akhter Hossain is Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Daffodil International University. He obtained MSc in Applied Physics and Electronics from Rajshahi University and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Dhaka. He received Erasmus Mundus postdoctoral fellowship in the area of Informatics and Industrial Engineering for his work with University Lumiere Lyon 2 in France. Mohammad Nurul Huda is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the United International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his B. Sc. and M. Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering degrees from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology in 1997 and 2004, respectively. He completed his Ph. D from the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering, Toyohashi University of Technology, Aichi, Japan. His research fields include Phonetics, Automatic Speech Recognition, Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence, and Algorithms. Mohammed Nazrul Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Security Systems at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. He received his BS and MS in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and his PhD from Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, in 1999. Prior to joining Farmingdale, he worked as a Research Scientist at Old Dominion University, an Associate Professor at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of South Alabama, and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of West Florida. He authored and co-authored more than 120 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include optical communication, wireless communication, digital image processing and solid state devices. He is a Senior Member of both IEEE and SPIE. Sajidul Islam completed his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and Engineering at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET). His current research interests include Evolutionary Computing, Cloud Computing, Mobile Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Fuzzy Logic. Mohammed Navid Izhar completed his B.Sc. Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Bangladesh. He is a programmer in a software company. Gareth J. F. Jones is a Principal Investigator in Centre for Next Generation Localization (CNGL) and Faculty Member of the School of Computing, Dublin City University. He was previously with the Department of Computer Science, University of Exeter, and conducted research at the University of Cambridge, and as a Toshiba Fellow in Japan. He holds B.Eng and PhD degrees from University of Bristol. His research interests are in applications of information retrieval including multilingual and multimedia search technologies. In 2010, he co-founded the MediaEval benchmarking initiative for multimedia evaluation. He is a member of the ACM, ACM SIGIR, IEEE Computer Society, and the steering committee of FIRE (Forum for Information Retrieval Evaluation), India. He has published more than 300 papers including receiving Best Paper Awards at ACM SIGIR and ACM Multimedia. Ahamad Imtiaz Khan received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Military Institute of Science Technology (MIST), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2009. Now he is Research Assistant and pursuing M.Phil in the area of Biomedical Physics with Biomedical Physics and Technology Department of University of Dhaka. Mohammed Rokibul Alam Kotwal completed his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Degree from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), in 2007, and Master of Science in CSE Degree from United International University (UIU), in 2010. Johannes Leveling is a Research Fellow at Dublin City University where he works on query adaptation for digital content management. He obtained his Diploma on Informatics at the Carl-von-Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany. In 2006, Johannes defended his Doctoral thesis on Formal Interpretation of User Queries for Natural Language Interfaces Targeting Information Services on the Internet. From 2006 to 2008, he worked at the University of Hagen on natural language processing for question answering, geographic information retrieval, and text readability analysis. Johannes has published more than 60 reviewed papers. Fakhruddin Muhammad Mahbub ul Islam received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Military Institute of Science & Technology (MIST), Bangladesh, in 2009, where he is a Lecturer. He is currently pursuing MSc. degree in Computer Science at St. Francis Xavier University, Canada. His research interests are language processing and real time systems. G. M. Pabitra Mitra is an Associate Professor of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. He completed his B.Tech degree (in Electrical Engineering) from IIT Kharagpur, 1996, and Ph.D. degree (in Computer Science) from ISI Kolkata in 2003. His area of research interests is Machine Learning, Data Mining, and Information Retrieval. He has won Royal Society Indo-UK Science Network Award (2006), INAE Young Engineer Award (2008), and IBM Faculty Award (2010). Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman is the Pro Vice Chancellor of United International University (UIU). Before joining UIU he worked as the head of Computer Science & Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology. Prof Chowdhury earned his Ph.D from Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research area covers Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Pattern Recognition, and has published more than 100 technical papers in international journals and conferences. M. Lutfar Rahman is Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was founding Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Dhaka. Professor Rahman obtained MSc in Physics in Bangladesh and MSc and PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in England. His teaching and research interests include Microprocessor Applications, Computer Networks, Information Security, and Bangla Language Processing. Mohammad Mizanur Rahman is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Institute of Science and Technology (IST), Dhaka. He earned his M.Sc. and B.Sc. (honors) in Computer Science from Institute of Science and Technology, under National University, Bangladesh. His research area covers character recognition, neural network, network management, congestion control, and QoS at Internetworking platform. Shamim Ripon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he leads Software Engineering and Formal Method Research Group. Previously, he was a Research Associate in the Department of Computing Science, University of York, UK, and Research Fellow in the Department of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, UK. Ripon holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering from Khulna University, MSc in Computer Science from National University of Singapore, and PhD in Computer Science from University of Southampton, UK. Fiona Ross specializes in non-latin type design and typography, having a background in languages with a PhD in Indian Palaeography (SOAS). From 1978 to 1989, she worked for Linotype Limited (UK), with responsibility for the design of their non-latin fonts and typesetting schemes. Since 1989 she has worked as a consultant, author, lecturer, and type designer; her recent work as a designer has been in collaboration with Tim Holloway and John Hudson (as Associate Designer at Tiro Typeworks), developing original typeface designs for clients that include Ananda Bazar Patrika, Adobe, Microsoft, and Harvard University Press for the Murty Classical of Library of India. In 2003, Fiona joined the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK), where she is Reader in Non- Latin Type Design and Curator of the Department s Non-Latin Type Collection. Maxim Roy received his PhD in Computer Science from Simon Fraser University, Canada. His primary research interests lie in Natural Language Processing (NLP) mainly focused in statistical machine translation, co-reference resolution, and entity extraction techniques. He received his M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Windsor. Currently, he is team lead in the language group at Northside Inc., Canada, where he is involved in R&D of a full NLP pipeline (parsing, reasoning, and generation) for a revolutionary video game technology featuring natural language-based interaction and advanced AI. Bishnu Sarker received his B.Sc. (Engg.) in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Bangladesh, in 2011. He is a Lecturer of CSE, KUET since. His research interest includes Evolutionary Computation, Computational Linguistic, Fuzzy Control system, Distributed Computing, and Fault Tolerant Computing. Hasan Sarwar is a Professor and Head of CSE Department at United International University. He received his PhD from Dept of Applied Physics, Electronics, and Communication Engineering of University of Dhaka in 2006. His research areas of interests are numerical simulation of semiconductor materials and devices, pattern recognition, computer communication and network, telemedicine. He works as a consultant to develop the Research and Education Network of Bangladesh (BDREN). M. Abdus Sobhan is a Professor in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), Dhaka. Previously, he was the Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council under the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Govt of Bangladesh from 1997 to 2002. He obtained the BSc Hons and MSc degrees in Physics and Applied Physics and Electronics (APE) in 1969 and 1970, respectively, from Rajshahi University (RU), Bangladesh, and his PhD degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 1989. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed international journal papers and about 150 International and National level Conference Proceedings papers. 403
