What Is PBIS? Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is an ongoing initiative that is used to evaluate to the effectiveness of the core curriculum for behavior. The PBIS Core team meets twice monthly to analyze behavior incident report (BIR) and office discipline referral (ODR) data in order to identify students or groups of students in need of additional support. The data is also utilized to identify teachers and/or classrooms in need of support beyond the core curriculum and determine the training needs of teachers and staff. The PBIS Core Team is educative and works collaboratively with teachers and support personnel to develop proactive strategies to increase desired behaviors while decreasing inappropriate behavior. The PBIS Core Team at West Gate K-8 is comprised of an administrator, dean, primary teachers, intermediate teachers, an ESE teacher, a school psychologist, and parents. Each team member is assigned role with specific responsibilities to further support the initiative. The team receives and provides on-going training on each component of PBIS. The team is responsible for the development the PBIS plan that is implemented school-wide. The PBS plan is presented to the School Advisory Council for their feedback and suggestions. The goal of the PBIS team is to develop a system that facilitates positive behavior change in our students and staff. The goal of the initiative is to reduce the number of inappropriate behaviors occurring across campus by teaching and reinforcing the appropriate behaviors of both students and staff. The role of the PBIS team is to develop, review, and maintain a school-wide PBIS plan with clearly define behavioral expectations and rules. It further outlines a discipline process that is consistently implemented across settings. The use of school-wide expectations and setting specific rules are established to teach and reinforce appropriate behaviors. A reward system to encourage appropriate behavior and

effective consequences to discourage inappropriate behaviors is also in place. Staff and students are surveyed for their input. This information is used to assist in developing effective interventions to decrease inappropriate behavior and increase desired behavior. West Gate K-8 school-wide PBIS plan ensures that children have the opportunity to develop the skills and behaviors that will enable them to realize success as responsible adults. The plan focuses on the POWER expectations: Promote Safety, On Time, Willing to Learn, Engaged, and Respectful. Students are recognized for demonstrating the POWER expectations through behavior specific praise and awarding of Mustang Money. Mustang Money is used to purchase various tangible incentives from our school store and/or entrance to PBIS supported activities such as dances. Parents are updated about upcoming PBIS events through our monthly newsletter and are encouraged to participate by volunteering and reinforcing the expectations at home. Since opening its doors in 2006, West Gate K-8 has been a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) school. Its faculty and staff continue to implement PBIS with a high level of fidelity, establishing rules and expectations that are reinforced consistently across campus. West Gate K-8 is a model school in the district, preparing our students to be successful both academically and behaviorally.
