Concurrent Studies at UFV GW Graham Students Process for Registration of UFV course and Dual Credit: Secondary school students may take courses at UFV while still working toward secondary school graduation, under the following guidelines: 1. The student is attending GW Graham school and is in Grade 12. 2. The student is deemed to have strong academic ability or may benefit substantially by taking the university course. Recommended as a 9 th course taken after regular school day (Ministry course code PSIW12A which is 4 credits). 3. The student's parent or legal guardian provides written support to the GWG Counselor. 4. The student submits to UFV Registrar s Admissions office, by May 31 st (during course selection time), the following Registration Package : the Request for Concurrent Studies form. The student must indicate the specific course desired. An alternate choice (2 nd choice) is recommended. a recent high school transcript, including interim grades for the current term, and proof of meeting course prerequisites (if any); a letter of recommendation from the high school principal or counselor; a letter of Sponsorship (re coverage of tuition fees) from the high school principal, and Complete the UFV Application for Admission form (online), along with the UFV application fee. The student pays the UFV application fee and the cost of textbooks and materials. Once the application is received and approved by UFV, the UFV admissions office will: 1. Ensure the request is approved by the course instructor(s) and program/department head. 2. Advise the student of acceptance and registration procedures (Concurrent studies students will be scheduled to register at the end of the regular registration period). Note: Students who apply for concurrent studies are governed by the same privacy regulations as regular UFV students. Therefore, once an application has been received, all communications and correspondence regarding the student s status will be between the student and UFV. Parents, teachers or counselors may not inquire on the student behalf. It is the student s responsibility to inform his or her counselor when accepted into the course. The student may request one course per semester, under normal circumstances. This limit may be increased in special circumstances, with approval of the appropriate dean.
UFV courses count as dual credit, earning both university credits and secondary credits. In order to have credits assessed and added to high school transcripts, the student must: provide proof of UFV registration to GWG Counselor by September 15 th (requests are subject to the approval of the UFV instructor and the Department Head, and the availability of a seat); provide a UFV transcript of grades showing completed course mark for the UFV course(s) to GWG Counselor at the end of semester 1. Availability of UFV Courses to Secondary Students There are over 100 courses at UFV which have no prerequisites (see UFV calendar for course requirements) and many of these courses are offered at the UFV campuses at a 3:30, 4 or 7 pm start time. This Concurrent Studies course provides students with an important transition experience as they attend one of UFV's three campuses in blended classes with regular university students. Taking one of UFV's on-line courses is also an option. Students sampling university courses can do some program and educational exploration while accumulating postsecondary credits. Students must apply by May 31 for the Grade 11 year. Please note: Not all courses are available every semester. Preference is given to university students and secondary students are encouraged to apply well before the deadline. Late applications will not be considered. For more information about Concurrent Studies please see this link: http://www.ufv.ca/ar/admissions.htm#concurrent. Students who have enrolled in concurrent studies at other recognized post-secondary institutions prior to secondary school graduation may be eligible for transfer credit. The student should arrange to have an official transcript sent directly to UFV from the institution they attended. Re-admission policy A $20 re-application fee is required. Students who have been admitted to concurrent studies at UFV and who fall into any of the following categories must apply for re-admission to UFV or to a program upon graduation from secondary school: 1. UFV students who fail to attend courses for two years from the time of their first course. Some programs, e.g., Health Sciences and Trades, require continuous enrolment. Check individual program information. 2. Students who fail to register in the first semester, or who withdraw completely in the first semester of attendance.
