Head Coach Garland O Keeffe Garland O K Keeffe Head Coach Fourth Season Indiana University, 1994 Garland O Keeffe enters her fourth season as the head coach of the Iowa women s swimming team. In her first three seasons, O Keeffe has compiled an 18-16 dual record, going 6-12 in the Big Ten. She has coached six all-americans, six NCAA qualifiers and a Big Ten Champion. The Hawkeyes have also shattered 24 school records in the last three years. O Keeffe and the Hawkeyes had outstanding success in 2002-03. The team placed 20th with 41 points at the NCAA Championships - its highest finish and point total at that meet in school history - and crowned three all-americans in Jennifer Skolaski, Lisette Planken and Nancilea Underwood. It was the first time during her tenure that O Keeffe had three NCAA qualifiers, and all three came home all-americans - the most crowned by the Hawkeyes at one national meet since 1986. Iowa posted an 8-4 overall season record, which was the first winning season under O Keeffe, and the first for the program since 1999-2000. During her first two seasons, O Keeffe, coached Melissa Loehndorf and Allison Lyle to all-america status. Loehndorf earned her second all-america honor in 2001, placing 16th in the 200-yard butterfly after winning a Big Ten title that event. She earned her first all- America honor in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 1999-2000. Lyle was O Keeffe s first two-time all-american, earning honors in the 100- yard breaststroke in 2001 and in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2002. Skolaski became the third NCAA qualifier of O Keeffe s career, competing in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, and the 500-yard freestyle at the 2002 NCAA Championships her freshman year. If there is any area where O Keeffe wants more improvement for the team, it is at the Big Ten Championships. While the Hawkeyes have recorded 20 top-five finishes at the conference meet in the past three seasons - including 10 in 2002 - they have not placed higher than seventh as a team and have only crowned one individual champion. Two of O Keeffe s season goals are an upper-division finish at the Big Ten meet, and to have more Hawkeyes atop the winner s stand at the end of competition. Under O Keeffe, Iowa s success in the classroom has matched its success in the pool. In three seasons, there have been 23 academic all-big Ten selections, including 12 in 2002-03, and two academic all-americans. The team has earned CSCAA academic all-america honors twice during O Keeffe s tenure. Prior to becoming head coach of the Hawkeyes, O Keeffe served one season (1999-2000) as Iowa s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, in charge of the sprint and breaststroke groups. The team enjoyed a very successful season with the help of O Keeffe, as she coached two athletes to record-breaking performances in the 50-yard freestyle and three swimmers to NCAA consideration times. Before coming to Iowa City, O Keeffe was the head women s swimming and diving coach at St. Bonaventure University (1998-99). O Keeffe coached the Bonnies to their third consecutive Atlantic 10 title in 1998 and a runner-up finish in 1999. Prior to becoming the head coach at St. Bonaventure, O Keeffe was the associate swimming coach at Villanova University (1996-97). She served as the Wildcat s recruiting and travel coordinator, and founded and coached Villanova s Masters Swim Team. 4 103 NCAA Qualifiers, 35 All-Americans, 16 Big Ten Champions O Keeffe in USA Swimming United States National Team Member Placed fifth in the 400 IM at the 1988 Olympic Trials Silver medalist at the 1987 Pan Pacific Games in the 400 IM Runner-up in the 400 IM at the 1986 and 1987 Spring and Summer Nationals Swam world ranking performances in the 400 IM and 1,500-meter freestyle United States swimming all-american in the 200 and 400 IM, and the 1,500-meter freestyle Coached 2001 National Team Distance Camp

Head Coach Garland O Keeffe O Keeffe also served as an assistant swimming coach at Eastern Michigan from 1994-96. While with the Eagles, she received her Master of Arts degree in College Student Personnel. A 1994 graduate of Indiana University with a bachelor s degree in English, O Keeffe s collegiate swimming career began at the University of Texas, where she was a member of the NCAA Champion Longhorns in 1990. The next fall she transferred to Indiana, where she was selected to the all-big Ten team for three-consecutive seasons. She was also a Big Ten finalist in 1992-94 and was the team s High Point Swimmer in 1990. In 1992, O Keeffe set an Indiana school record in the 200- yard backstroke, which remained until 1999. In each of her three years with the Hoosiers, O Keeffe served as the swimming team s co-captain. Before college, O Keeffe was a U.S. National Team member from 1986-88. She placed fifth in the 400 individual medley at the 1988 Olympic trials. At one time, O Keeffe cracked the world rankings in four different events, including a top 10 ranking in the 400-yard individual medley. O Keeffe is a founding member of SUMMIT, an annual meeting of elite women s swimming coaches from across the country. O Keeffe, a native of St. Louis, swam for the Sugar Creek Swim Club and the Clayton Shaw Park Swim Club. The former high school all-american sports medals from the 1986 and 1987 spring and summer Senior Nationals (silvers in the 400- IM) and the 1987 Pan Pacific Games (silver in the 400-IM). Each time, O Keeffe touched the wall just behind United States swimming legend Janet Evans. Her brother, Dan O Keeffe, is still an elite swimmer. He competed in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics for Guam, where both he and his sister were born. Dan swam the 100-yard butterfly. O Keeffe and her husband, Jay Wilson, have a son, Bailey. 2003-04 Season Preview By Jana Hemphill and James Roe The Iowa women s swimming and diving team enters the 2003-04 season with a squad of four seniors, nine juniors, nine sophomores and five freshmen. Head Coach Garland O Keeffe has high hopes for her team. Senior Co-Captain Christie Hooper If we could move up in the Big Ten standings, it would be phenomenal, said O Keeffe. Our bigger goal is to qualify more athletes for the NCAA Championships. The Hawkeyes lose only two seniors from last year s squad that placed 20th at the NCAA Championships - the highest placing in school history - on the all-america performances of juniors Lisette Planken, Jennifer Skolaski and Nancilea Underwood. Skolaski and senior Christie Hooper will serve as team co-captains this season. I m excited about the leadership for this season, said O Keeffe. The senior class is comprised of Michelle Bagi, Lisa Haunz, Hooper and Jackie Molzahn. Hooper looks to build on an impressive 2002-03 season, where she had 30 top-five finishes, including 10 wins. Her strengths will include middle distance freestyle and the butterfly. Bagi and Haunz will continue to bring strength to the backstroke and butterfly. Molzahn will add depth to the sprint freestyle events. The large junior class will continue its strong efforts from last season. Skolaski is expected to build upon last season, where she broke school records in the 100 backstroke and 400 individual medley. Skolaski earned second team all-big Ten honors for taking second in the 200 backstroke at the Big Ten Championships and also earned all-america honors for her eighth place NCAA finish in the 100 backstroke. She notched 33 top-five finishes, including 18 wins. Other returning juniors are Erin Cochran, Kristen Eide, Katelyn Eustis, Molly Gable, Caitlin Girdley, Katie Haeger and Abby Van Maaren. The juniors will be a force in sprint freestyle events, with Cochran, Gable, Girdley, Haeger and Van Maaren competing. Eustis and Girdley will also add depth to the middle distance freestyle. The breaststroke events will be led by Eide, Haeger and Kunnemann, while the backstroke will look to Eustis and Van Maaren. The sophomore class is returning Andrea Hemphill, Karen Kelly, Katie Koenig, Erica Noah, Jeni Sanderson and Kelly Werner. Junior Co-Captain & All-American Jennifer Skolaski Junior Kristen Eide 8 103 NCAA Qualifiers, 35 All-Americans, 16 Big Ten Champions

2003-04 Season Preview Werner led the team last season in the 100 butterfly and looks to strengthen her times not only in the butterfly, but also in the backstroke and sprint freestyle. Hemphill led the Hawkeyes in the 200 butterfly last season. Joining her in the individual medley will be Koenig. The team should also get strong performances from Koenig and Noah in middle distance freestyle. Sanderson and Kelly will compete for the Hawkeyes in the sprint freestyle events. Newcomers for the Hawkeyes are Emmy Haeger, Katie Martin, Erin Petty, Robin Samples, Jaclyn Sarna and Joyce VanKeulen. Petty and Samples were cochampions in the 50 freestyle at the Junior All-American state meet last year, and will help fill Lisette Planken the sprint freestyle events. Haeger will join them in adding depth to the sprint freestyle. Martin, a sophomore transfer from Wisconsin, is expected to bring strength to the sprint and middle distance freestyle. VanKeulen, the second athlete to hail from the Netherlands, will also add depth to the middle distance freestyle. O Keeffe is expecting much from the freestyle events, and especially the freestyle relay teams this year. I m most excited about the 800 free relay because we are very strong in the 200 free. I believe we have a good chance of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, said O Keeffe. As always, diving will be a strength for the Hawkeyes, although all-american Nancilea Underwood has opted not to compete this season as she has been invited to train with the US National team in preparation for Olympic trials. Senior Jackie Molzahn Lisette Planken returns from an outstanding 02-03 season and an even more impressive summer. Planken finished fourth in one-meter diving and ninth in the three-meter event. She also managed to set the one-meter diving championship record at 314.90 points. Planken represented her native country, the Netherlands at the World Championship games this summer where she placed eighth in the one-meter and twenty-third in the three-meter. She also competed at the World University Games in South Korea, placing eighth in the onemeter and 10th in the three-meter. Katie Bures will help add some depth to the diving squad after sitting out last year. Our team continues to move in the right direction. The entire coaching staff is looking forward to building on the successes we experienced last season, said O Keeffe. Iowa Hawkeye Athletics The University of Iowa Athletic Department, under the direction of Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby for the past 12 years, is regarded as one of the top intercollegiate programs in the nation. The men s and women s departments, operating separately for over 25 years, merged in 2001 under Bowlsby s direction. It combined nationally recognized programs for both genders into one successful and progressive athletic program. Combining their successes on the playing fields with continued success and recognition in the classroom, UI student-athletes practice and perform in some of the best facilities in the nation, while knowing the support of their efforts and attendance by Hawkeye fans ranks among the best in the country. While the Hawkeyes continue to compete with the best in the nation in a variety of sports, Iowa continues to boast some of the most impressive athletic facilities in the nation, operated by one of the most respected departments. Several new projects are underway on the Iowa campus. The goal is to improve all areas of the collegiate experience for Hawkeye student-athletes. One of the latest additions to the UI campus is the Roy G. Karro Athletics Hall of Fame and Visitors Center. The Hall of Fame and a varsity soccer complex make up the first phase of a $37 million project. Phase two of the project includes new swimming and diving pools, and indoor and outdoor tennis facilities, in addition to bicycle and walking paths. More than $15 million of the total cost will be generated through private giving. Additional priorities for the Iowa program include the establishment and development of endowments for all sports Big-time athletics is a staple of student life at the University of Iowa. programs, the continued enhancement of graduation rates, and the implementation of a long-range plan to ensure Iowa s financial, academic and competitive future. As an example, all of Iowa s 13 scholarships for men s basketball are fully endowed. The Iowa s student-athlete graduation rate has improved in each of the past 10 years and has consistently ranked above the graduation rate of all UI students. Hawkeye athletes have garnered more than 50 academic all-america honors since 1992. In 1998-99 Iowa led the Big Ten in academic all-big Ten selections and ranked second in 1999-00. In 2002-03, over 140 Hawkeye athletes earned academic all-big Ten recognition. Iowa athletes have been recognized as all-americans in their sport on more than 175 occasions during the past 12 years. The University of Iowa student body is a fixture at all Hawkeye athletic events, making Iowa City a very difficult place for opposing teams to visit. Iowa s 2002-03 athletics teams continued their trend of success. The Hawkeye football team posted a perfect 8-0 Big Ten record in winning the league title. Iowa participated in the 2003 Orange Bowl and ended the season ranked eighth nationally in both major polls. Iowa s men s and women s basketball teams have advanced to post-season play in each of the last three seasons, while Iowa s wrestling and gymnastics teams continue to rank among the best in the nation. Iowa has won six of the last nine NCAA wrestling titles and nine of the last 13 championships. Iowa s men s gymnastics team placed sixth in the nation, while the women s gymnastics squad also advanced to the team competition at the NCAA championships. The women s softball team earned both the Big Ten regular season and post-season tournament titles, advancing to NCAA regional action for the eighth time in 10 seasons. Iowa s field hockey squad was ranked in the top 15 in the nation throughout the 2002 season, while individual performers in track and field and women s tennis also qualified for NCAA championship competition. From the rankings on the courts and playing fields, to the rankings in the classroom, to the rankings in fan and community support, to the ranking as a program that boasts some of the best athletic facilities in the nation, it s easy to understand why Iowa fans everywhere truly believe, It s Great to be a Hawkeye. 36 103 NCAA Qualifiers, 35 All-Americans, 16 Big Ten Champions

Athletic Student Services Since its inception in 1979, Athletics Student Services has evolved from a two-person, academic support service to a broad-based, nationally prominent student support services operation. Its purpose is to assist student athletes to become tomorrow s leaders by offering academic and personal support services to assist them in making timely and satisfactory progress toward their degrees. Athletic Student Services focuses on four important areas academic counseling and monitoring, educational and support programs, retention programs and compliance services when working with student-athletes. Following are descriptions of some of the programs, services and opportunities available to student-athletes in those areas. Athletics Learning Center The $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center, scheduled to open in August of 2003, will give all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to help them with their educations. The Athletics Learning Center is a multilevel, 20,000 square foot facility which will provide a computer center, study areas, classes and meeting places for all Hawkeye student-athletes. The Learning Center will feature an auditorium that converts into two classrooms, separate study rooms for under and upper-class student-athletes that feature 28 study carrels, a computer lab, five tutorial rooms, the book loan repository, office space for Iowa s Student Services staff and a display area to recognize the academic accomplishments of Iowa s student-athletes. Academic Counseling and Monitoring Athletics coordinators work closely with student-athletes and their university-assigned advisors from the time they arrive on campus until the time they leave the University. Along with focusing on academic planning matters such as goal-setting, plans of study, choosing majors and degree requirements, coordinators also help student-athletes understand NCAA, Big Ten and University academic policies. They also solicit feedback from instructors on a student-athlete s academic progress. Tutoring Tutoring is available free of charge to all student-athletes. Tutors, who are post-graduates and teachers, help with course content as well as study strategies and are available in virtually all general education subjects. Retention A full-time staff member directs the retention program, which identifies student-athletes who may need tailored academic assistance and structure, and implements individualized learning plans to help them succeed. Such plans may include daily and weekly planning sessions with athletics coordinators and retention staff, tutoring, study groups, mainstreaming into on-campus services like the writing center, math labs and services for students with learning disabilities. Transition Seminar All new student-athletes attend an eightweek transition seminar during the fall semester that is geared toward helping them make the transition from high school to college successfully. Seminar topics include time management skills, learning and study strategies, the culture and rules of the university, and life skills concerning alcohol and other substances, relationships and intimacy, diversity, tolerance, values and character. CHAMPS/Life Skills Life skills programs are conducted throughout the year with and for student athletes on quality of life issues critical to personal growth, such as personal accountability, responsible use and nonuse of alcohol, diversity and gambling. Career Guidance and Development Planning a meaningful career and a fulfilling life is an ongoing process of expanding and narrowing choices, beginning when student-athletes arrive on campus and continuing throughout their college career and lifetime. The professional staff works with other career development professionals on campus to offer individual consultation, career development seminars, workshops, referrals to other campus offices and special events like the Senior Recognition Banquet for graduating student-athletes. Hawkeye Traditions THE HAWKEYE NICKNAME The University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa many years ago. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the fictional novel, The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them. In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired the nickname, chiefly through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madison. Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843 and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to popularize the name, and territorial officials eventually gave it their formal approval. HERKY THE HAWKEYE The Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character, later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer III, instructor of journalism at Iowa. The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was the man who suggested Herky. Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and epitomized University life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron. During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mascot. Since that time, Herky has been a familiar figure at Iowa athletics events. SCHOOL FIGHT SONG The Iowa Fight Song was written in 1950 by Mason City, Iowa, native Meredith Willson. Best known as the creator of Broadway s The Music Man, Willson was awarded a 1963 University of Iowa Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award for setting the spirit of Iowa to music. The lively cheer is sung hundreds of times during Iowa athletics events the year around. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Let every loyal Iowan sing; The word is Fight, Fight Fight for IOWA Until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!) Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer for IOWA Come on and cheer until you hear the final gun. The word is Fight, Fight, Fight for IOWA Until the game is won. 44 103 NCAA Qualifiers, 35 All-Americans, 16 Big Ten Champions SCHOOL COLORS For 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school official colors. They chose Old Gold, the color of Iowa s vast corn fields and Black, the color of the rich soil.
