MCCC Sports Interest Survey Results 2015 Jamie DeLeeuw, Ph.D. Objective: Monroe County high school students were surveyed at the request of the MCCC Board of Trustees to better understand high school students interest in a sports program at MCCC. Method: Principals within the Monroe County Intermediate School District (MCISD) were emailed the Sports Interest Survey link on Survey Monkey and asked to distribute it to students. The survey was anonymous, and several reminders were sent. Athletic directors were also contacted and asked to distribute the link within classes that all students generally take. Responses were collected between December 11, 2014 and February 12, 2015. All non-student responses were excluded. Results: The majority of participants were from Summerfield High and Monroe High, so results are not representative of the district as a whole. Twenty percent of respondents currently plan to attend MCCC after high school. Of students not already planning to attend or unsure about attending MCCC, 26% indicated they would attend MCCC if it had a sports program, 44% were unsure, and the remaining 3 still would not attend. An additional 14% said they would attend MCCC if athletic scholarships were offered. Forty-five percent of total respondents were amenable to paying a $25 activity fee per semester to help fund a sports program, 34% were neutral, and 21% were opposed to the fee. Women s volleyball was the most popular sport that respondents said they would try out for, and men s basketball and women s volleyball were the biggest attendance attractors. Participants were largely unsure (36%) of how frequently they would attend athletic events; however, said they would attend weekly, and 11%, never. Regarding sports not specifically presented in the survey, interest in football was mentioned the most frequently in the free response section. IR 7/14/15 1

IR 7/14/15 16 If you have any comments about athletics at MCCC, please share here. Answered: 79 Skipped: 427 # Responses 1 I believe wrestling should be added to the list of sport events. 2 You should have athletics 3 You should really add a Baseball program. 4 I think it would be great for the school, and even better for the student. 5 I would worry more about how teachers treat students than sports. 6 Sports needs to be wide spread. It is an acticity that is needed to keep more students going to school local or you force us to attend colleges out of town. 7 You need football that would be awesome to have a community team 8 I don't exactly care for sports except for hockey, golf, and baseball/softball. Those ones I'd most likely attend and/or participate in. 9 I think you should really do it, if you did there would be a lot more kids wanting to go there and I know that I would go there too so please consider it. 10 You should have cheerleading because I know a lot of people who love to cheer 11,non 12 I thinks getting athletics would be good, it's a way to get students invloved and give them motivation? I think yes! 13 Make a baseball team 14 Softball! 15 Football now 16 Would love a volleyball program!!! Between SMCC, Bedford, Monroe, Ida and Dundee-you could have a powerhouse! :) 17 Would you be adding a baseball program? 18 Would love to see a Baseball program at MCCC. 19 If you could set up something to have a swim team for the college, you could have the practices at MHS 20 i feel with Monroe being a school known for there football, it would be a wise choice to offer football as one of the athletics at MCCC 21 i would be strongly interested in football 22 Please bring the athletics to the school. Give students the opportunity to continue in their sports they enjoyed in high school. Thank you for the consideration of bringing sports to MCCC. 23 So many other Community Colleges offer athletics and MCCC did before, I think it is a great idea and ABOUT time! 24 My parents would gladly pay $25. They are used to paying $150 per sport. At a colelge level I would think they would be more than happy to pay $1000 so that I would stay at home go to MCCC and still be able to play football. It would save them tons of money. thousands... 25 You lose alot of kids by not having sports 26 This is exciting! 27 With Kim Windham coming in strong at the high school, a volleyball program at MCCC would be so great!!!

IR 7/14/15 17 28 I think it's time for the college to have athletics. I would love softball to be added to the sports and would go to see the games. 29 No reason MCCC should not have athletics. People pay more than $25 to pay at high school. 30 I think athletics at MCCC would be very beneficial for students. 31 I have wished for so long that MCCC would have a football team. We have so many great players in Monroe county that only leave Monroe just to play football elsewhere. MCCC would have an all star team with just theier Monroe County athletes. Do it...now! 32 Do it 33 I have been waiting for years for the college to start up actual teams!! I participate in club volleyball now and am the president of the club, but I feel like we would do so much better if we could hold tryouts and be a "real team". 34 Football is the main attraction for any school so if you want to keep as ports program alive you need football 35 Track 36 MCCC could be a lot more popular with an athletic program 37 You guys should get a team 38 I think it's a good idea but you need money and supporters to help start the program 39 It good to have the opportunity to play sports 40 Don't make the students that don't play sports, pay $25 to fund a sport they don't care about. 41 Football 42 i think they are excellent. i personally know sports help my education. 43 Bring sports to MCCC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 44 I wouldn't try out or be on a team even if you offered me cake. 45 Have Baseball. 46 no comment homie 47 I dont have any... 48 As a student at Summerfield, you have no idea how hard it is to find a legitimate soccer team in monroe michigan, if there is a Men's soccer team, I'd make MCCC at the TOP of my list. 49 bring on the sports!!! 50 they should do it that would encourage me to go there 51 this is the worst waste of time you could possibly put on a person 52 this is boring and i dont like it at all why would u waste my time 53 its a bad idea and is probably going to fail. 54 Softball is the best sport 55 NO 56 Be sure to have coaches that are able to communicate to everyone well 57 no 58 No. 59 nope 60 PLEASE go through with this! This is a terrific idea and next year I will be attending MCCC but was very sad that there is no sports involved and I am a basketball player who was unable toplay my senior yer due to a knee injury. If the program goes through, my senior year will no longer be my last year of the passion I have for my sport.

61 please do golf i would try out for it in a heart beat. 62 you should have a baseball team as well. 63 i think its a great idea 64 nope 65 I'm not very interested in athletics so this isn't really for me. 66 Athletics students tend to strive in school; to receive better grades. 67 no 68 Cheerleading? 69 good idea would attend most events 70 Sports would encourage me to go to MCCC 71 I only watch I don't due sports 72 no 73 need welding 74 No 75 I would love to participate if you had a volleyball team 76 A bowling team would really be great and if bowling scholarships were available. 77 Love to see it happen! 78 I'm not going to college so don't consider this survey. 79 Get baseball IR 7/14/15 18
