8 Why is higher education and research so important for further progress and growth in developing countries?

South-South-North cooperation for strengthening higher education and research in developing countries Basis for the Norwegian initiatives National strategies as platform Internationalisation as a key to quality in HE & research Thematic and geographic priorities Variety in measures Partnership programmes Sholarship programmes 9

The partnership model Elements Equality The needs and priorities in the South Long term institutional cooperation Bottom up approach but Commitment in the leadership at the participating institutions Twinning of funds Transparency And: we promote strongly to build synergy with other programmes and measures 10

The Partnership model Main goals and some results Capacity building Institutional development Internalisation for institutions, South and North Network cooperation South-South-North 11

The University of Malawi, 2006 So far the NUFU programme can be proud of having trained three PhD s and nine Masters in our University. Another twenty one students (of which nine are Malawians) have carried out research in Malawi. The contribution, to data base in the Medical, Agricultural and Environmental fields have been enormous. Malawians, who have been trained through other financing systems such as Norad fellowship and Quota programs build capacity in various fields in this country just like their comrades under NUFU. 12

A good example - Tribhuvan University, Nepal Institute of Engineering, long term cooperation with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Education of PhD staff Capacity to take responsibility for other institutions 13

Challenges Sustainability, both academic and economic Brain drain Create synergy with other partners To measure the results achieved 14
