Self-Paced Degree Program BA 208-W3 Marketing Principles Web-Based Course Syllabus Availability: I am available by phone Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00 PM 9:00 PM EST and 12 PM 5 PM EST on Saturdays and Sundays. I am available for questions by phone via the days/hours listed above although it is best if you e- mail me your questions first as it is easier and often quicker for me to get back to you via e-mail versus via phone as I am able to provide detailed responses/examples and you are able to specifically list out your questions and comments via e-mail. I review e-mails on a daily basis and will get back to you within 48 hours unless I am traveling for work, on vacation, or out for some type of an emergency. COURSE DESCRIPTION Course Meeting Place: uiulearn Credits: 3 semester credits Catalog Course Description: This course surveys the role of marketing and its place in society, in profit and not-for-profit organizations. Emphasis is placed on consumer orientation, the marketing concept, product, price, distribution and promotion. The course provides a basis of understanding for advanced marketing courses. Prerequisites: None COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Define and explain marketing and the marketing concept from both academic and business perspectives. 2. Understand and be able to explain the importance of a consumer orientation for individuals and organizations. 3. Understand consumer need satisfaction through marketing planning and application of the elements of the marketing mix. 4. Understand and be able to explain the role of marketing and marketing institutions in society. 5. Develop a conceptual view of the functional areas of marketing as an academic and occupational discipline. 6. Email: You are required to use your official UIU issued email account janedoe@peacocks.uiu.edu Computer and Internet: You are responsible for ensuring that you have a reliable up-to-date computer, updated virus protection, and Internet connection to access the course materials and complete course activities. You need to make alternate arrangements in case of unexpected computer and Internet problems. Backup: Remember to regularly back up course files to avoid data loss in the event of hardware failure or user error. You have six months from the date of your enrollment to complete this course. You should begin work on the course immediately upon enrollment and start submitting lessons for grading and evaluation in a timely manner. If no course work has been submitted within the first two months, an administrative withdrawal will be processed. GRADES & FEEDBACK Students can expect exams/assignments graded and returned within 48 hours after the student has submitted their work. Likewise, questions and general comments will be responded to within 48 hours. I will make an announcement on the site in the event that I will be out of town (work travel, vacation, etc.) such that you will know if the time to respond will be longer than 48 hours. In terms of the feedback that I will provide, my goal is to let you know what you are doing well and the areas that you need to improve on. I am not a fan of surprises and therefore, I try to be as detailed as possible in my feedback such that there are no surprises in terms of how you are doing on this course. For written assignments, I utilize Track Changes feature in Word such that you can see exactly what the problem is and where the problem occurred on your assignment. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING CRITERIA The course is completely developed in uiulearn and consists of 10 units. All course materials will be available and all work should be completed in uiulearn. Completion of a unit will release the subsequent unit. Even though you do not attend a regular classroom in the traditional sense and keep up with a set schedule of assignments, it is important to maintain a regular schedule, if possible, to complete all course work. It is too easy to set work aside and decide to do it later. Upper Iowa University Page 2 of 8

Student Autobiography Student Autobiography is the first assignment in Unit 1. Since we may never have the opportunity to meet face to face, I would like to know a little bit about you. Please provide the following information and tell me about yourself (i.e. - your educational aspirations, employment, family, hobbies). Submit this autobiography as an MSWord document to the Student Autobiography Dropbox under Unit 1 in uiulearn. Assignments The most common assignments in this course include Check Your Learning zes, Short Answer, Case Analysis, Literature Review Essays, and two Exams. Refer to uiulearn for more information on these assignments. Each assignment and exam will be awarded points from the potential points available. Partial credit will be awarded for at least attempting to answer Unit Short Answer, Case Analysis, Literature Review Essays, as well as Essay questions on Exams. If no attempt is made to answer a particular question or parts of assignments, no points will be earned for those particular questions. In terms of the Case Analysis and Literature Review Essays, you will need to follow the requirements listed for these assignments. If the requirement is to submit 2-3 well developed paragraphs, then you need to do this in order to earn a good grade on these assignments. Do not just copy in passages from the textbook or articles. Learn to paraphrase or on an EXCEPTION bases use quotation marks and the page number (within your parenthetical source citation) to properly cite your source. I want to hear from you your thoughts/experiences supplemented by the textbook and/or articles accordingly. No extra credit will be available in this course. See the Course Schedule below for specific requirements. Final Assessment The final exam will consist of 550 points. Use of Turnitin Turnitin is an educational tool for evaluating and improving your writing skills. It will find matching text and provide the percentage of similarity with other sources websites, student papers, articles, journals, periodicals & books. Turnitin will be used for this course on select assignments as noted within the specific Units. Grading Criteria The course letter grade will be based on the following grading criteria. USE OF ENCYCLOPEDIA IN WRITING Encyclopedias of any kind, including the very popular Wikipedia, can be useful to help gather background information and to point the way to more reliable sources. However, they are not considered appropriate sources for papers at the graduate or undergraduate level. WRITING PROFICIENCY You are required to use the APA Manual, 6th ed., as a writing guide. CHEATING, ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AND PLAGIARISM Because cheating, academic dishonesty and plagiarism constitute a denial of the University s and the offender s own integrity, they will not be tolerated. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: The use of unauthorized books, notes or other sources in the giving or securing of help in an examination or other course assignments. The copying of other students work or allowing others to copy your work. The submission of work that is not your own or allowing others to submit your work as theirs, The submission of the same work for two or more classes without the approval of any instructors involved. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: Sharing academic materials knowing they will be used inappropriately, Accessing another person s work without permission, Providing false or incomplete information on an academic document, Changing student records without approval, Obtaining and using texts or other materials intended for instructor use only. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to: The presentation of another s published or unpublished work as one s own, Taking words or ideas of another and either copying them or paraphrasing them without proper citation of the source, Using charts, graphs, statistics or tables without proper citation. Detected cheating or plagiarism will result in consequences that may, at the professor s discretion, include course failure. In addition, an offender can be reported to the Faculty/Student Conduct Board for possible further disciplinary action. www.uiu.edu/policies WITHDRAWAL (W) Withdrawing from classes is an expensive decision and may change the amount of, or eligibility to receive, financial aid. Your academic advisor is available to discuss this decision with you. A grade of W (withdrawal) is recorded for any course from which a student withdraws. ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL (AW) A grade of AW (administrative withdrawal) is recorded for any course from which a student is administratively withdrawn. At least one complete assignment must be submitted within the first 60 days of the enrollment period or the student will be administratively withdrawn from the course. INCOMPLETE Students will automatically receive and I (incomplete grade) at the end of their original six month enrollment period if: A minimum of one unit of course work has been submitted for grading per guidelines AND All course units and exams are not completed and submitted OR A course withdrawal has not been initiated. Incomplete grade details: When an incomplete grade is issued, the student will receive another six-month enrollment period to complete the course. Upper Iowa University Page 7 of 8

Students do not have the option to withdraw from a course after the initial six-month enrollment period has been completed. An I grade posted to the student s official record will be replaced with a final letter grade; however, the incomplete will remain on the official transcript as a notation. If the course is not completed by the end of the incomplete period, the instructor will assign a final course grade (A-F) based on work completed in relation to the total course requirements. After that point, credit may be earned only by reenrolling and repeating the course in its entirety. Note: Students are not reported as enrolled during the incomplete period and are not eligible for student loan deferment.
