JOG-Miami Valley Page 2 Celebrating A Decade of Service It s hard to believe that we have been empowering youth for success for ten years now. Since our founding in 2003, our staff of dedicated Career Specialists has worked with over 12,000 youth in providing employability skills training, academic remediation, job placement, and other support services to those youth who need additional support in making the transition from the classroom to a career. Our organization provides a service which has an outstanding reputation with highly successful outcomes. And those outcomes are impressive: for the seventh year in a row, our high school senior participants had over a 90% graduation rate. In addition, after twelve months following graduation, the class of 2012 experienced an 89.62% positive outcome rate (job, college, or military). By attaining the tools necessary to become self-sufficient, productive adults, our participants have proven themselves to be job-ready. As we begin our second decade, the Board of Trustees and staff look forward to serving the youth of our local communities. As certain as we are of new challenges that we will encounter, we will stay true to our mission to prepare youth with the knowledge and skills in order to successfully transition from a diploma to a career. At the same time, we recognize that change can also be good. In the fall of 2013, we will change our name to YES! for Youth. New name, same dedication to our community s young people. JOG-Miami Valley Page 6 Highlights 2012-2013 27th ANNUAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE The 27th Annual Career Development Conference (CDC) was held at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Dayton South on April 24, 2013. Over 70 students from 12 area programs competed in Employability Skills competitions such as: E-Portfolio, Application Technique, Employment Interview, Public Speaking, Employment Process, Telephone Techniques, Employment Testing and Decision Making. Though most of the events are for individual competitors, there are a number of events where team participation is required and group dynamics are key. Those events included: Students for Service, Team Challenge, Visual Display and JOG Jeopardy. The CDC events are judged by local business professionals volunteering their time to support the youth in our community. This year s Regional event hosted 29 judges from local businesses and government agencies. Winners of the Regional events were eligible to compete at the State CDC held in Columbus, OH. Of the 25 Regional winners attending the state competition, JOG-Miami Valley students earned a total of 21 First, Second, and Third Place trophies. Congratulations to all of our competitors at both the Regional and State levels. You showcase the skills and leadership qualities supported and taught throughout the JAG curriculum. THE TIKE S SHOP As part of the Dayton Holiday Festival, the annual Tike s Shop continues to be a success. Combine the setting of the Schuster Center s Wintergarden Wonderland with the hard-working students of MVYCS, a sensational endeavor is guaranteed. Under the management of Northridge Career Specialist, Christie Richards, the students experience all the aspects of running a business. From the Fall planning sessions to actually working in the Tike s Shop during the holiday season, the student workers are busy anticipating and tending to the needs of their pint-size customers. Those little shoppers secretly buy and wrap holiday presents for their family and friends while being assisted by the student workers. The Tike s Shop has become a fixture of the holiday season in downtown Dayton. By coming to the Tike s Shop, the children and their parents continue to experience Dayton s festive holiday traditions while supporting the work and endeavors of the community s youth. ANNUAL HOLIDAY CARD DESIGN COMPETITION Participants in our programs have the opportunity to learn and gain valuable skills. Some even have occasion to demonstrate their special talents and interests. Each year, MVYCS holds a holiday card contest. Participants of all of our programs are eligible to participate by creating a card depicting the universal themes of the holiday season. The winning entry is placed on our annual holiday card which is sent to our stakeholders and supporters. The student with the winning entry also receives a $75 gift card. 2012 Design Winner Ray McConnaughey Northridge HS NATIONAL TRAINING SEMINAR Each year Jobs for America s Graduates holds a National Training Seminar. One of the most anticipated events of the seminar are the awards given to top performing staff and programs. JOG-Miami Valley Page 7 Program Overview JOG-Miami Valley, doing business as Miami Valley Youth Career Services, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and an affiliate of Jobs for America s Graduates (JAG), one of the oldest and largest school-to-career transition programs in the country. Our JAG programs provide youth participants with guidance, academic support, leadership development and team-building along with work experience opportunities through high school. Upon graduation or attainment of a GED, our participants will also receive twelve months of follow-up services to assist in that successful transition into entry-level employment with advancement potential, or into full-time college or training.
