TRAINEESHIP Either a compulsory or an elective part of the degree The traineeship included in the degree can be completed either abroad or in Finland, supported by university or the employer covering all the costs Students may apply for a subsidy for a traineeship that is part of their degree. OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS OF TRAINEESHIPS The objectives of traineeships are defined by your own degree, so please get to know the objectives before the traineeship During the traineeship you can acquire information regarding different employment possibilites, search for your own path apply what you have learned in practice: learn new skills, learn how theoretical learnings are applied in working life find a topic or material for your master s thesis A traineeship is an excellent opportunity to create contacts. PREPARE FOR A TRAINEESHIP See to the employment agreement and the traineeship agreement Acquaint yourself with the employer s organisation before the beginning of the traineeship Clarify your own and your employer s objectives for the traineeship Familiarise yourself with the learning objectives of the traineeship course in your degree Keep a learning diary Please ask further information about reporting the traineeship from the coordinating teacher of your degree programme. THE TRAINEE S WAGE A trainee always agrees on his/her employment with the employer, who pays the wage of the trainee The mimimum wage of the trainee is set by Kela, in 2017 it was 1 187e/month A trainee has the same rights as any other employee working for the employer (sick leave, occupational health care, annual leave etc.) Read more about employment relationships from the publication Ready for working life issued by Akava. UNIVERSITY FUNDING FOR TRAINEESHIPS The subsidy is one way to get support for doing the traineeship. The subsidy is not paid directly to the student, but is instead used to cover part of the wage expenses for the employer. The traineeship subsidy is 1 800 per student for a traineeship lasting at least two months. The employer is entitled to invoice University after the traineeship about the wage expenses (1 800 ) The employer will pay the wage for the trainee. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE STUDENTS Traineeship Yliopiston harjoitteluki subsidy All attending undergraduate students are eligible to apply if they meet all of the criteria below: Bachelor s students with 60 credits completed at the University of Helsinki by the time of application. Master s students at the time of application, if you meet the remaining criteria below: The degree programme/degree you are currently completing includes a course involving a funded traineeship. You have not completed the course involving a traineeship which is included in your degree programme/degree. You have not previously used the University of Helsinki s traineeship subsidy. Exceptional cases in which the funded traineeship is only in the Master s stage: the Faculty of Social Sciences general and adult education (Finnish- and Swedish-language programmes) at the Faculty of Educational Sciences geosciences/geology at the Faculty of Science agricultural sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry NB! Exceptional cases in which the funded traineeship is incorporated only into the Bachelor s stage: Master s programme for teachers of mathematics, physics and chemistry. CRITERIA FOR THE PLACEMENT Traineeship subsidy The traineeship placement can be in a company, central or local government, an organisation, an association, a foundation or a cooperative in Finland or abroad. The University s traineeship funding is not available for a traineeship in which the University of Helsinki is the employer. The trainee must have a contractual or public-service employment relationship, and the wage paid to the trainee must equal or exceed the minimum wage defined by Kela (1 187 /month in 2017). CRITERIA FOR THE PLACEMENT Traineeship subsidy The minimum duration is two months. The trainee must be offered expert duties and the traineeship must develop the student s professional expertise and provide opportunities to learn new knowledge and skills. HOW TO APPLY? Traineeship subsidy 1. Make sure you meet the criteria for applying for the subsidy. 2. Once you have been selected for a traineeship placement, notify Career Services by completing the relevant e-form. 3. Career Services will check the information on the e-form to confirm that both you and your employer are eligible for the funding. 4. After completing the e-form, you will receive an email concerning the decision to grant you the funding. Attached to the email will be a pre-filled traineeship agreement 5. Submit the traineeship agreement to your employer for signature. You will receive detailed instructions via email. Traineeships/Career Services 06/11/2017 19

WORKING LIFE PROJECTS Besides of the internship, the University of Helsinki provides two English-medium working life projects: Demola co-creation working life project (5 ECTS credits), in collaboration with Demola International and several partners Master Class working life project (5 ECTS credits), in collaboration with Outotec Both working life project concepts reflect current labour markets in dynamic ways. In both project concepts, students work in multidisciplinary teams, solving real-life cases with partner companies. The working life projects connect students with employers and several stakeholders.
Demola provides several different projects twice a year. The application period for the Spring projects will open on Monday the 11 th of December, at the same time with the enrollment to the 3 rd teaching period courses at the University of Helsinki.
