All Aboard For First Grade Science

Look at Worksheet 1. Who is the scientist? Do you think they are all scientists? How can you tell? What are the scientists in the pictures doing? Can you name other things scientists study? What senses are the scientists using? When you are done studying the picture, answer the question about the picture. Look at worksheet 1a. What do you see in this picture? If you were exploring this river what senses would you use to explore it? Would the water be cold or warm? How could you find out? Do you think it would be noisy or quiet here? What sensee would you use to find out? What else might you hear or see here? When you are done studying the picture, answer the question about the picture. Read and discuss the You Are the Scientist activity. Remember, never taste anything without first asking an adult! Take a bag and take a walk with outside with your teacher. Pick up items you think are interesting and put them in the bag. Why did you hee pick that item? Collect five or six items then go back inside. Take out one of the objects and look, touch, smell, and feel the object. Can you hear the object? What shape is it? What happens when you give it a push? What does it feel like? Is it hard or soft? What does it smell like? Answer the questions about the other objects that you collected. Share what you observed about your objects from the walk with your teacher. Draw a picture about what you observed and write two things you observed during your activity.

There are many kinds of scientists. All scientists observe things. If you were a scientist, what kind of scientist would you like to be?

Name: Date: Directions: Answer the questions below Who is the scientist? Do you think they are all scientists? How can you tell? What are the scientists in the pictures doing? Can you name other things scientists study? What senses are the scientists using? 1. Who is the scientist in the pictures above? Do you think they are all scientists? 2. Can you name other things scientists study? 3. Name the senses thesee scientistss are using in the pictures.

A Scientist Observes. Use your sensess to observe things. What do you seee in this picture?

1. Takee a walk outside. 2. Pick up objects that you like. 3. Put them in your bag. 4. Take the objects inside and observe them using your senses. 5. Draw a picture and write two things you observed about your favorite item in your journal.

Today you will experiment with measuring tools. You will decide which measuring tool should be used to measure different items. Look at a ruler, a tape measure, and a yardstick. How are they alike and how they are different? All of these tools measure, but the ruler is better to measure smaller things and is 12 inches long. The yardstick is used to measure bigger things and is 36 inches long. The tape measure is used to measure the biggest things, like the length of a room. Scientistss measuree things that are big and things that are small.

Look at the pictures on the worksheet. Decide which measuring tool you should use. Circle which measuring tool would be most appropriate to use. 1. Toy Car Ruler Yardstick Measuring Tape 2. Sandal Ruler Yardstick Measuring Tape

3. Book Ruler Yardstick Tape Measure 4. Crayon Ruler Yardstick Tape Measure 5. Tree Ruler Yardstick Tape Measure

STUDENT MANUAL Today you will learn to measure with measuring cups and learn about volume. What do people use measuring cups for when they cook? Scientist use measuring cups to measure volume. Volume is how much space something takes up. side to show how Some measuring cups have marks on the er are in this much. Can you tell how many cups of wate measuring cup? Examine the measuring cup. Notice the numbers and words. Do youu see the 2/3 cup mark, the 1 cup mark, the 1 1/3 cup m cups mark? How much fluid do you see in this measuring cup mark and the 2? There are also milliliter marks which are a measurement in the ystem. e metric sy There are different types of measuring cups, but both measure is the space thatt something takes up. e volume. Volume

STUDENT MANUAL Youu will need to find 4 or 5 different containers, such as a small glass, small bowl, tall thin glass and a largerr bowl. You will also need a 2 cup measuring cup. You will need water for your experiment. As you are doing your experiment, you may answer questions in your journal or use the digital template below. What you do 1. Get 4 or 5 different containers. 2. Fill each container with water. 3. Pour each container of water into the measuring cup. 4. Record in your journal how much water each one holds. 5. Put the containers in order from the least volume to the greatest volume.

STUDENT MANUAL Look at the measurem ment needed for the measuring cup. Color the Cup to the required measurement line. 2. Show 1/2 of a cup
